In OP's defense that is EXACTLY what merchant ships used to do.

Min-maxing is strong in Eve. Which yields some awesome killmails for things that shouldn't have died. Like Orcas. Let's look at the Orca? Is it defenceless, really? It is only defenceless if the driver maxes out the cargo of it. Ie puts cargohold expanders in the lows and cargo rigs.
This is my exploration orca. It has nearly 220k ehp, and I feel sorry for any high dps ship that gets in close. It's susceptible to long range, sure, but you can't counter everything.
However, forcing close range ships out reduces incoming dps. It may buy you enough time for your friends to show up. Or for the attackers to get some battleships onto the field. But, since it never leaves high sec, I think there will be a lot of wrecks around this orca and a lot of concord orbiting it.
It isn't an optimal fit for anything. It's not min-maxed, not for defence, not for cargo. I think it's a balanced fit for its purpose, to carry my ships around and house what little loot I get when I run high sec DED plexes, radar and mag sites.

Large Shield Extender II Large Shield Extender II Invulnerability Field II Invulnerability Field II
Medium Energy Neutralizer II Medium Energy Neutralizer II Medium Energy Neutralizer II
Large Core Defence Field Extender I Large Core Defence Field Extender I Large Core Defence Field Extender I
Hammerhead II x5
If people stopped min-maxing everything, then they might realise that a ship like the Orca is not, in fact, as defenceless as you'd think. ---

Even combat ships have trade offs depending on the role you are fitting them for, why should bears have their cake and eat it too when everyone else can't? Would you be in favor of combat ships being able to both armor and shield tank effectively while still retaining their full DPS and speed?

Defenseless mining bots deserve to die. Why make the bots jobs any easier by giving them combat abilities? To hell with them. You choose a defenseless ship, as I do often, you accept the drawbacks with the desired gains.

Edited by: Cors on 16/05/2011 18:32:33 I like the idea. Why? because it'd do two things. One, it'd shake things up a bit. And two, more people might fly industry ships.
Example. The typical freighter.
Put a rack of BS sized high slots on it. Maybe because of their mass give them 2x as many highs as a ship normally has. Maybe 16 BS class weapons? It's already got a decent HP tank. So let it shoot back. Have them automagically subtract the mass of the weapon systems from the cargo capacity.
I mean, we CAN add Cargo Expanders to any combat ship so they can haul more. Why couldn't they do the same in reverse?
I LOVE the idea of Q ships. This should be a ship class in game that looks/scans the same but has hatches open up and turrents/missle launches roll out. Or maybe a skill that allows you to add weapons to your industrial/freighters. 2 High slots per level or something.
Nothing would be more magical then having a Freighter jump into low sec, get snagged by a HIC, have the HIC's buddies warp in, then have the Freighter destroy the HIC, and a BS before it dies.
Hell, the thought of a convoy of Freighters in 0.0 with weapons fending off roaming gangs would be kick ass.
Don't make them combat ships. Make them industrials with bolted on weapons.
I mean seriously. If you were a wealthy pod pilot. Flying freighters. Wouldn't YOU upgrade the Engines? The armor. The sensors. Even adding on weapons? Hell, the Minmatar ships are supposed to be held together with spacetape. Why not tape on a few weapons? :)

No ships are completely defenseless if you use them correctly.
Eve is an MMORPG. The second M in there is the important part, and I've bolded it for you just in case you missed it.
It means MULTIPLAYER. (There's that bold again, just for you.)
Ships that have no local means of defence are designed to be used in tandem with other ships, or escorted by other ships. The entire concept is based around making people team up and work together to achieve and end goal.
How many escort Ops have you been on in the last month? Everyone knows whaht everyone else should do, everyone but me of course.
While I might agree we know how this game works. Its all about that "multi player" or more accurately, the gank and no matter how many escorts a hulk has it will pop under focus fire.
Three, actually.
Our corporation recently relocated temporarily to TXW in Syndicate from Goinard, in Sinq Laison.
It took 30 of us with carriers and jump freighters to move over 500 hulls across from one office to another
It's all about teamwork, and not flying solo. No ship is defenceless in Eve if you have the friends and know how to play the game.
