I normally use a gank fit Harby or a Geddon as these ships are perfect for the role, but as i normally wardec corps of 5-10 people by myself i have been caught in a blob a few times. Shield tankers are custom made for Amarrian ships so thats probably the best way to go.
What im looking for is a ship that can break the tank of a Drake and escape if needed which normally means cruiser sized or smaller
Slicer/Dramiel. No chance unless its a real noob with a real noob fitting and you have plenty of time at your disposal
Phantasm good DPS but im not sure as its a shield tanker.
Zealot/absolution. Your thoughts. Lack of Drones on the Zealot and that its mainly for range mean that it might not be good for solo work.
any thoughts would be appreciated to fighting a ship that anyone can get into and is a huge pain in the ass at all times.

An absolution can melt a drake as a rule. Really depends on the drake fit tbqh.

if you go by "ability to disengage at will" cynabal and vagabond would probably be a decent choice.

think so.
but in case it's not, a zealot will probably be blown to bits since the ship is somewhat frail.

Edited by: Aloe Cloveris on 17/05/2011 15:57:18 Dual-/triple-rep, cap boosted, autocannon Myrmidon. You could even use some standard exile booster for even better reps, but that's overkill. A lone drake's meager dps isn't going to break through those heavily-bonused reps before you handily chew through his shields.
e: oh, being able to disengage at will is a thing? Yeah, the armor rigs will certainly slow you down, so ...

Edited by: NinjaSpud on 17/05/2011 16:43:30 I hate drakes, and have devoted my PVP to killing them.
See, there are really 2 accepted fits of drakes. (mainly)
DPS Fit Drake (sacrifice shield recharge, but you fire missiles faster) - a 1600mm plated well fited harby can take this bad boy out....but this is a little skill intensive as you'll need advanced weapons to 5 in order to fit all t2 guns and the 1600mm plate.
Tank fit (extra shield recharge, lower rate of fire) - This one's a little harder to crack. In most of my experiences, it will simply outlast and absorb more damage then a buffer fit harby can put out before the harby goes down. In this case, you'll need a rep'd Absolution. I usually go with a 800mm plated +1 rep abso, and completely outclass the drake. A slepnir could do the same easily, w/ shield recharges.
The abso fit can also take out the DPS fit drake. So all in all, if you want a almost guaranteed win (of course, different situations apply) a Absolution is the way to go.
Dual/trip reped Myrmadons will work, but it's a long fight as a super tanked myrm doesn't hit very hard.
Canes go down to fast. they have the DPS to break a drake, but just not the tanking ability.
That's all I've tried so far.
I Want to try an ashimu...I bet money that the Ashimu would be able to neut the drakes recharge in a hot second, and then melt the tank...again, untested.
*edit* all these are assuming 1v1 too. there are many exceptions.
A few examples:
A sniper fit zealot could melt threw a drake...but not stop it from warping off. a close range zealot might not be able to do it, but I'm not sure as I've not flown a close range zealot.
The cane can annihilate a drake, if the drake is shooting something else or if the cane has RR.

I'm somewhat derailing, but I'll have you know that if your willing to go with FMPs you can get a 1600 and a medium rep on your Abso easily.
Edit: Also, a neut.

Anything with enough active tank and enough DPS to break the passive tank will easily solo a Drake, even more so if you go specific and fit any kind of kinetic resists.
In 1v1 an active tank can come out ahead with ease, but since you never know what you're up against and how many, most fit buffer. ------------------------ Low-sec is like sailing along the coast of Somalia...

The phantasm will get chewed up. It cant tank well at all and the capacitor is a joke.
Ishtar, Sac, any T3, Rook, Harpy (blaster fit). If you get a little bit of support it opens up the possibilities, and that's what people force you into most of the time when they choose to undock in a drake.

<theory_crafting>
How about an ECM HAM Drake with Rage ammo? Three gravimetric ECM IIs + 2xParticle Dispersion Augmenter rigs = 5.38 jam strength. (1 - 5.38/19)^3 = 36.8% chance for the target Drake to be UNjammed on average.
With just three ECM IIs and no rigs, that's (1 - 4.5/19)^3 = 44.4% chance to be UNjammed on average.

Thanks for all the replies.
It seems that an absolution is the way to go.
I can understand why people talk of nerfing the drake. It takes days to get into one and the rest of EVE to get out of it.
A few days to get in and only very skill intensive ships can break it

Only if he's using entirely passive hardeners, which isn't often the case...

Tried an Ashimmu, neuting works for disengaging but you still have the problem of that tank, if he's DPS fit you'll get him but full-on tank, probably not.
Phantasm can buffer tank fairly solidly but it's no Drake. And as mentioned the cap is rubbish so you'd have to gimp your tank to consider fitting a cap booster - it most likely won't last long enough to punch through that peak recharge rate otherwise.
Hurricane, maybe a armour tanking one with neuts could do the job. A max-gank fit shield tanker certainly cannot. But if you go armour tank you lose the ability to disengage
If you're careful with your Zealot it can probably do the job. But as you probably know it's a glass cannon - so basically the Abso looks to be the best choice. The main issue there is that if you lose it to a blob, it'll hurt your wallet quite badly.
Consider a Cyclone w/implants and booster. Puts out plenty of pew, and with a burst tank will handle a small blob for long enough to get out. Of course implants are expensive, but that depends on how confident you are of avoiding a podding. ============= The People's Vivi - the blog of a high-sec carebear with dodgy teeth. ============= |

Edited by: Captain J Planet on 18/05/2011 06:14:39 Is it that time of the month again? Another newb slums it to the forums to cry about drake tankage?
Only a few days to get into, great exaggeration there champ. Here's a tip for you: spend your forum tear time figuring out how your target fits his drake, exploit his weakness (yes, drakes have those too) and get a killmail instead of this 'ata boy,' garbage from fellow bottom-feeders who think the drake is grossly OP.
You kids kill me with your doom scenarios. "Well, if he fits like this you die if you're fit like that, and if he fits like this you win but, OMG OMG he'll have a blob with him and lolurdead." If you can't be asked to figure out his fit or learn if he has re-enforcements nearby, you deserve a ****ing lossmail. Simples.

I have to say a Cyclone with a faction booster and some blue pill does the trick nicely. This works. and this is coming from a drake pilot with several hundred kill under his belt. I fall for this every time...Its just a Cyclone! BTXI |

I'm sceptical about the command ships. Even if the drake pilot is a noob, he should know that he stands no chance vs a command ship and wont engage, except he has a blob behind him. The real difficulty in Eve is getting someone to agress you, if you fly a stronger ship it simply wont happen. You can take your chances and fly a fast ship that can disengage but then you are limited to ships like Vagabond and it is really hard to impossible to break a good Drake fit with them.
I dont really know how to fight them as well. The typical Drake has heavy missiles fitted, so kiting outside weapon range is out of the question, this might only work with HAM fits. He also will have a strong buffer with at least one large shield extender and extender rigs, coupled with invufields/em hardener maybe. Personally, I would fit a web to a drake but especially newer players tend to cram more tank on it instead.
Assuming the typical drake has no web, I would use a ship with afterburner to mitigate missile damage and neuts to shut down the invufields. Preferred damage would be either em if you hope that he hasnt got an em hardener or thermal as it would be the weakest resistance once the em hole is plugged.
From BC class I think active armor cane with neuts could work but only against newer players. You wont kill a well fitted HAM drake or an obscenely tanked one. An active tanked myrmidon could do the trick as it has a stronger tank than the cane and decent dps at point blank range. Use either blasters or autocannons with em/therm ammo and a scram to keep him in range. One or better two cap injectors to keep your tank running and maybe one neut to shut down hardeners. This reduces your dps though. Not sure about the Harbinger but I doubt that it can outlast a Drake. The armor tanked version cannot fit heavy pulse lasers and the dps isnt stellar then, a gank version with heavy pulses has not enough tank to outlast a drake i think.
Drakes are so popular for a reason, a really well flown and fitted drake (especially the HAM ones) is simply the strongest BC- only help there is to blob or sit in a stronger ship.

Shield/Gank Harbinger with a kinetic hardener, even easier if you get to engage at a range of your choosing so you can drop the MWD for more tank/tackle/ewar.
Gives you twice his damage with roughly same EHP (provided he isn't bait fit).
