The Steam version happens to be on sale for five dollars, and I've been meaning to buy another account. My question is, however; should I play off of Steam, or should I just buy the game and use its key? -----

I recommend not buying Steam as they bind the Eve account to the Steam account.
If you cannot access Steam, your screwed.
May aswell just pay CCP get somebody on a buddy program and download the client without steam.
That way you can run without connecting to staem, if you want to run with Steam chat etc you still can as an external app.

yeah, avoid the steam cloud you honestly get nothing worth the hassle of dealing with steam. ------------------------------------------------ There is a theory which states that if anyone discovers just exactly what the universe is for and why we are here, that it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. Then there is a theory which states that this has already happened. á á -Douglas Adams

EVE buying through steam DOES NOT bind it to your steam account. Well, at least it didn't last time I bought EVE from there.
You should send yourself a buddy invite. When you pay for this second account you'll get a free plex.

Buy key off Steam but don't use Steam to play Eve. What I have done and what I continue to do.

This is what me and my friends all do. You don't need Steam to play EVE after you've bought it. You get given a CD key.

I WAS told that the buddy invite does NOT work with the STEAM special of $4.99. I was also told that If you already had sent your friend an invite to the game and they are on their trial period, they can not use STEAM to activate it. Hate to ask this but, could we have a dev post to clarify this?
I happend to use STEAM every day and the majority of my games are purchased through it, and if you played Modern Warfare, you would know that you needed STEAM to play multiplayer.

Buddy Invite does not work with steam promotion, correct its one or the other.
Its for new accounts only so if your friend is on trial already it will not work.
EvE =/= MWF you do not need steam in order to run EvE Online even with a account that was made using steam.

don't do steam. no deal is worth that. especially since you are talking about a game that you wont simply own (in which case the ability to DL games and play from wherever is pretty kick ass, unless they nerf'd that since last i used it..)
just download eve, pay the extra few dollars for normal activation and be happy. besides... the steam client adds bloat and lag that will kill you in blog wars... (or jita)

What I'm saying is that:
-EVE accounts bought through STEAM are not bound to STEAM as it usually happens.
-There is no reason to go after that STEAM promotion IF you already have one account. You can use your active account to send a buddy invite to yourself (and this is LEGAL). You do that, and your new acccount will be on trial for 21 days if I'm not mistaken. When this trial is over, and you pay one month for this second account (regular payment, not steam), you will be awarded ONE PLEX on your main account, which you can turn into 30 days of gameplay or ISK (selling ingame).

Sorry, but as already mentioned previously in this thread, this is plain out wrong. The only thing that gets tied to your Steam account is the CD Key you get from Steam. Once the EVE account has been created with that key (by directly entering it on our website or by opening the according website through the Steam options of the game entry in the library), you can use those log in credentials with any other Client like any other EVE account, Steam doesn't need to be running for that at all.
Also, as I have seen this coming up a lot in various places (this has also been mentioned in one form or another, but lets put some "official" weight behind it): The key you get from Steam can be used to activate Trial accounts. However, activating with a retail key from online retailers such as Steam will not give the player who invited you any game time/PLEX, as outlined in the terms and conditions of the Buddy Program (https://secure.eveonline.com/Marketing/Buddy/ - scroll down to the bottom).
Last, but not least, it is not possible to use those keys to add game time to an account that already is a full account. |

Originally I bought Eve Online from Steam and played via Steam. Then I wanted to place the EVE folder in another directory... So I downloaded the Eve Client from the Eve Online Website and just logged in from there.
I've been playing Eve Online without using Steam for about a year.
Just my 2 isks...
Also the buddy invite will NOT work with any Steam promotion. I tried before and it says "offer invalid" or something like that. You USE to be able to do it a while back, but I guess they fixed it.
