Anyone remember the quote in the original Revelations trailer at the start?
Heh. I recall there was this thing about 5:14 having special meaning to asian culture, and while I can't recall the specifics or if it was accurate... did CCP just give us an outright hint as to what 514 means?
:tinfoil hat:
Edit: I want to deliberately add that this is deliberate bait for anyone from CCP that wants to say more on it all. Yes, i am taunting you to tell us all. Especially dropbear and/or headfirst. --

Nice theory but that quote is from Revelations 9:6

If 5:14 is a Biblical reference, Matthew 5:14, You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. That's a fairly famous verse.

Galatians 5:14 "love thy neighbor as thyself" seems more appropriate to a game wherein you run around blowing up thy neighbor, particularly from the perspective of smug atheists.
But religious posturing aside, there is something interesting in the "curse of immortality." It's appearance in EVE has so far largely taken the shape of patronizing nonsense - yes, yes, capsuleers are all very "special." But the refrain is more substantive in vampire fiction, and so the quote Myxx uses points to at least one strand of continuity between EVE, DUST, and World of Darkness.
That suggests a more sophisticated treatment of regaining consciousness repeatedly in world as corrupt as New Eden might begin to emerge.

I always assume 5:14 it referred to Tin's position on the Periodic Table. (i.e. Tin Soliders).

I actually assume the quote she's referring to is this one:
"And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them." Revelations 9:6
I don't think the two quotes are really related though other then in wanting to die. That quote is from the part of the bible dealing with the Christian idea of the end times, which is the book of revelations...and its a trailer for EVE Online Revelations...funny story that.
The quote from Dust 514, seems to focus more on the burden of living with what you're forced to do on a daily basis. The soldier forced each day to march off to war, to kill, and die, and witness their own death and rebirth, again, and again, and again. If you had that for eternity...how long would you really want it?

Edited by: Myxx on 19/05/2011 12:10:57 ah. here it is. Chineese lucky/unlucky numbers. 514 being, 'I want to die' that is the 'conspiracy' i speak of primarily. wasn't aware that the revelations quote was unrelated.

If I remember correctly the dev that introduced Dust 524 on fanfest said something along the lines of, the people with the most knowledge of EVE would know what it stands for. For this reason I always assumed the number was directly related to something specific in game. Maybe something to do with cloning like 513 being the most one could be cloned without being cloned into a plantlike being before the invention of DUSTs.
I like the tin thing though.

I heard a rumor that there are 514 lowsec systems in the game. Anyone know if that's true?
Or maybe number of lowsec planets?
Although the number sounds too high for systems and too low for planets.

Hello Nikita, ok I'll bite (just a little).
That's essentially what I was thinking when I wrote the quote that's being discussed here. Please note that I'm not a Content writer here at CCP and am not involved with the backstory and lore of DUST 514. (I'm the DUST 514 Community Manager and the other quotes seen so far are not from me but rather from the Content and Game Design teams.)
Still, I managed to get this in and up on the DUST 514 website. I'm glad to see that this sparked some discussion.

So my chineese numbers theory doesn't apply? :) --

Asian number theory can still be used:
In Japanese, "4" is "shi," which is often associated with "shin," which means "death." Four is therefore an unlucky number. The Japanese are gaga over vampires and death gods ("shinigami").
"1" is a lucky number in many cultures, but the Japanese do incorporate it into their word for "best" ("ichi-ban"), and names with "ichi" are strong (such as Bleach's "Ichigo" - incidentally, part "death god").
"5" is "go," and an important number in Asia mysticism - five colors, five elements, lots of fives. The order of the elements could turn 514 into "space earth air."
As an order of souls, it appears "514" could be "human damned asura" - which is quite interesting. The asura are too blinded by a desire for more power and possessions to achieve enlightenment, and are therefore trapped in an endless, futile war with the gods. It's because humans can transcend, while the asura cannot, that humans are "higher" (5 instead of 4).
I ended up here largely by stream of consciousness. Hat's off to the developers if equating the vain pretensions of capsuleer/mercenary "gods" to the asura was intentional.
It's quite perfect.

Five
Although five (五, pinyin: wǔ, jyutping: ng5) can represent "me" (吾, pinyin: w·) in Mandarin, it is usually associated with "not" (Mandarin 無, pinyin w·, and Cantonese 唔 m4). If used for the negative connotation it can become good by using it with a negative. 54 means "not die" or "no death". If used for the positive it can be used as a possessive. 528 is a way of saying "no easy fortune for me". 53 ("ng5 saam1" in Cantonese) sounds like "m4 sang1 (唔生)" û "not live".
Number 14 is considered to be one of the unluckiest numbers. Although 14 is usually said in Mandarin as 十四 "shf s8," which sounds like 十死 "ten die", it can also be said as 一四 "yī s8" or 么四 "yāo s8", literally "one four". Thus, 14 can also be said as "yāo s8," literally "one four," but it also sounds like "want to die" (要死 pinyin yao sǐ). In Cantonese, 14 sounds like "sap6 sei3", which sounds like "sat6 sei2" meaning "certainly die" (實死). Not all Chinese people consider it to be an unlucky number as the pronunciation differs among the various dialects. In Chiu Chow, 4 is pronounced as "see" or "yes". It is seen to be a lucky number because Chinese people like things in pairs (four would equal two pairs).
514 could then be said to mean Me Want To Die lol

There is a pretty heavy line of connection back to Seyllin with these quotes.
And now by chance I stumble on this and this.
Calathea Sata - did anything come of this?
Originally by: Calathea Sata Seyllin was hit earlier by Heavenbound. Intel from comm channels indicates that they were collecting some isogen-5. Heavenbound was seen flying in some sort of a supercarrier that we havn't seen before, perhaps they've managed to design a new one. Its capabilities are currently unknown.
I think I have my candidate for what the "Dust" is now.
As for 514 ... maybe it's a reference to:
Originally by: Eve Wiki YC 110 On May 14th, Federation President Souro Foiritan and Ishukone CEO Otro Gariushi announced a joint Economic Summit to take place in Malkalen, as an effort from both sides to ease escalating tensions. In a surprising and abrupt turnaround in ideology, Caldari Constructions CEO Tibus Heth responded positively to the announcement, and welcomed the economic initiative.
Yes, that would mean that 5-14-110 is the day that the Intaki were sold in Blind Auction. Maybe someone else was not happy to be excluded from the table. To boot, her info from the Zephyrs meant that...
She knew where to find the "Dust". But why tell Kuvakei?
My vote for "secret hand behind the scenes" is starting to be Silphy EnDiabel.
"Fans of Eve lore will know what it means" indeed.

well, it's a good thing we liberated the Intaki system from Caldari State control, except for the ishukone economic presence.
