I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 I also installed wine and winetricks
I downloaded and installed eve with no problems or errors.
I start up the program, and the initial Incursion window comes up, BUT, once the program comes up the screen goes black, then tries to load the login screen, but only loads the cloud background image...then that goes all pixelated...then screen goes black...then the cloud background shows up again...then the computer totally locks up...
any ideas?

Did you grab... winetricks vcrun2005 winetricks vcrun2008 winetricks corefonts
Also try running it "Emulated Virtual Desktop" under the graphics tab of your wine configuration.
I'm currently running it under Ubuntu 11.04 with an nVidia GeForce card.

i did not get those, i will try that out.
I'm running an ATI card that came in my laptop. I've been having a horrible time finding the driver for it...the driver i downloaded says its not for my computer? idk, i found another driver im going to try
I have it set to run in an emulated window....but when i use the short cut on my desktop, it does not open in a window...
but when i navigate all the way to the eve.exe file, and run that, it does open in a window....

after trying the fixes you suggested, eve will now not open at all. i open it in the emulated window, then get the error message that eve.exe has encountered a error and needs to close

Did you install directx 9?

I installed directx9, which i thought was already there but i installed it anyway.
Im back to where i started now...the incrsion start up screen comes up, but once the client starts, and it tries to take me to the log in screen, the screen goes black, refreshes a few times, and then i get the cloud background again and nothing else....the screen refreshes the whole time.
I can't do anything but turn the power off when this happens, i cant get out of it.

1) CTRL+ALT+F3 2) Login 3) killall wine 4) ps -e | grep wine If its still running, run step 3 again. If it shows nothing then the kill was successful, then; 5) CTRL+ALT+F7 (takes you back to desktop) __ Gothie <3 |

try running it from terminal e.g. $> wine eve.exe
this should show you any errors that occur.

when i type 'wine eve.exe' in the terminal, i get:
wine: cannot find L"C:\\windows\\system32\\plugplay.exe" wine: cannot find L"C:\\windows\\system32\\eve.exe"
why would it look in the system32 file for the .exe file?

it was looking in the system dir by default, try giving it the actual path to the .exe, something like:
wine explorer /desktop=eve,1024x768 "C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\eve.exe"
or
wine C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\eve.exe

What you want is a script or a launcher that targets the right exe and not just wine eve.exe. What you want is something like this.
WINEPREFIX=~/.eve wine explorer /desktop=EVE-Online,1920x1080 ~/.eve/drive_c/Program\ Files/CCP/EVE/eve.exe
WINEPREFIX=~/folder = yes it is case sensitive, _YOU_ always want to have a specific wine folder for each wine game. To create a wine folder you do WINEPREFIX=~/.foldername winecfg (this will create a folder named .foldernamed and it will be in your home folder "hidden"
you don't need to reinstall the game when creating another wine prefix you can use the new prefix and go for the old prefix when linking the eve.exe
You need to use WINEPREFIX=~/.eve if you want winetricks to affect that folder. Remember to use it! The Game |

Dunno what kind of laptop you have, but this was my experience trying to get Eve to run in Ubuntu 11.04 on mine (Dell Inspiron 1721.)
My problem was that, installing the Broadcom driver for my wireless card causes the graphics card to be unable to perform 3D acceleration. I searched high and low, but found no drivers or tweaks that could solve the issue. To utilize 3D acceleration, I have to disable the Broadcom driver, reboot, and play on an ethernet or phone-tether connection. From what I read, Linux driver support for older ATI cards was pretty limited anyway.

I'm not sure if i said this before, but i have no clue what drivers are installed for my video card, in linux or wine.
I've tried downloading the linux version and windows version (straight from the AMD website) and it says its not made for my computer.....idk
and when i run the 'additional drivers' tool in linux, the list is totally blank. Idk, i think im going to get rid of linux and go back to windows....i've had more problems trying to get things to work in linux than any other type of problem i ever had with windows....

That's not a rule of thumb. Maybe your rule of thumb was only to buy ATI. Sadly, that's a bad idea for Linux since ... forever ... no, prolly since shaders came onto the scene.
Maybe, one day, things will change.
