After you jump through a gate, can you activate a cloaking module while you are still cloaked from the gate travel, or do you first have to uncloak?
Does it work differently with ships that can warp while cloaked?

You must first move and drop your gate cloak. The most common way of doing this is the MWD-Cloak trick, in which you align to a celestial, quickly activate MWD and then cloak, so that you cloak within a second of moving and the MWD moves you far from the gate, at which point you can then warp away. |

And if you're in a covert-ops-cloaked vessel (those are the ones that can warp while cloaked), then you can skip the MWD part of the trick, but you still have to break the gate cloak to activate the covert-ops cloak. Get the rhythm right, and they will have all of one second to acquire and achieve lock before you're cloaked again. Once that's done, a covops-cloaked ship can warp away at its leisure.
The only hitch is that if there's something within 2000 meters of you, your cloaking device will shut down, or won't activate in the first place. |

I still advise the MWD trick, because if they have interceptors or MWD frigates, they can burn towards your last location and decloak you. I've literally been missed by a couple hundred meters using the MWD-Cloak trick. This is mainly a worry if they have a bubble, but always a good habit. |

Basic mechanic : You will have to drop your 60sec gate cloak (after arriving into system) in order to activate ANY ACTIVE ship modules. A (Prototype/Improved/Covert) cloaking unit is an active module. Aligning or any sort of ship movement drops the gate cloak automatically.
As for the MWD Trick, the proper sequence is Align > Cloak > MWD (0-2 sec after - do not delay as the activation window is short) > De-Cloak manually (0-1 sec after MWD cycle ends) > Warp. It helps to re-configure the MWD and disable its auto-repeat.
The WRONG sequence is Align > MWD > Cloak ... this will blow your sig for a split second that it's enough for an interceptor or remote sensor boosted ships to lock onto your ship. For a lowsec gatecamp, all they need to do is have someone in an interceptor mill around locking cloaky ships to prevent you from cloaking - that's all they do. They don't have to engage nor be under fire from the sentry guns. Don't get into the mistake of thinking that there won't be any interceptors lying around in wait in a lowsec gatecamp because they can't tank sentry guns. |
