The game has the ability to view a player's portrait in a larger view, it also has the ability to view a Ship in a larger view when you're checking out the Ship Info. My idea is that an in game screen shot would be similar to this.
It could even be in the form of a Camera Module. Probably work best as a midslot item. Be great for Covert Ops and Recon ships. Possibly balance it out by making the ship decloak before the Camera can be used. Possibly even an option to have it take a screen shot with all the UI windows present(for the valuable intel), or have it take a snap shot like if you pressed ALT and minimize all windows, or even like if you pressed CTRL+F9.
I know anyone can just press Prt Sc and take a screenshot, then upload it to photo sharing site, then link the site in chat, and then they have to go to that site to see the picture......all takes way too long.
Basically the idea is for a fast, simple way to take a snap shot in game, and share it instantly with your corp/alliance/fleet/local.
Possibly later on, the ability to stream a live video feed to other players of what you are seeing in space. Sort of like the Helmet Cam in GRAW, but it'd be a Ship Cam. This could even be used later on if CCP ever wanted to put in a video replay feature sort of like what Halo 3 has. Be like FRAPS but in game.
Anyways, what do y'all think about this idea and the possibilities it could open up down the road for live video feeds etc.
Oh yeah, another upside to a snap shot feature is it could cut down on comm chatter when relaying intel. Take a snap shot, link it, your corp views it, and gathers the intel without you ever having to say a word. It could be used a variety of different ways.

Thanks.
Thought of another advantage to such a feature in game.....
Live video feed and recording ability would serve as a fast and simple way for players to create tutorial videos for the noobs. Lots of great videos on youtube, but it would be cool to be able to record your own vids in game, and post them on the forums, or quickly present them in game to other players.

hey that would be cool. Give people a reason to gather at those billboards.
I bet they'll do something like that with the Incarna walking in stations. Sure they're going to have screens in the station's gathering areas as well.
Access terminals in the stations would be cool too for checking out posted videos and images. Sort of like archives of videos and images player as well as CCP posted.

Its called Facebook. You take pictur and upload it to your alliance facebook page yes ? i guess if you dont want to share it with Facebook you could have an FTP server or some other kind of homepage to upload it to. how ever i dont see why it should be CCPs job to make this happen over the eve servers course it seems to me they are bissy running the game and at times have problems handling this task.

Edited by: XxRTEKxX on 22/05/2011 17:26:45 If sharing snap shots would be such a huge load on the system, then how are they going to implement walking around in stations? Seems to me that is going to be a huge load on the system. Simply taking still images and sending them in game can't be any more intense on their server. Plus didn't they recently upgrade their server to some badass server? Remember them talking about it in one of those dev blogs.
Just imagine what walking around in Jita stations will be like. Sharing screen shots is peanuts compared what they have planned for the game.

I really like the general idea.

Thats not necessarily true. Low rez shots I think would be doable since its not something that would be happening all the time. Lets compare the two quick:
Walking in stations will require for movement: float x,y,z; for position, an float x,y,z vector for movement direction, and float O for a quaternion orientation. At 15 internal fps (they might implement it as less or more, or possibly even scalable), this would be 6*32*15 = 2880 bits / second. Thats something like a minimum bandwidth needed for just movement for each player that a player needs to know about. Lets say there are 64 players in a room with you, so 2880 * 64 = 184320 bps. In practice you would have some other traffic as well, but you would also be using data compression, so lets just keep it at this for the sake of this comparison.
Now for transmitting a screenshot in the same amount of bandwidth in say 5 seconds you would be able to spend 5 * 184320 = 921600 bits / 8 = 115200 bytes or 115k. So as a jpg, you could probably transfer a somewhat reasonable quality image over 5 seconds at a similar cost as 64 people all moving around in the same room at the same time.
Alternatively instead of sending a "screenshot" you could send a snapshot of the locations and properties of everything in view, and the destination clients could just render a still, quite a bit cheaper bandwidth wise and perfect quality.
I'm sure you can see that video would quickly grow vastly in excess of this. The way "video" would have to be done would be another camera for each person viewing located in the system in question. This would cost about the same as if you were actually there (and would of course require the client to have the ability to connect to two or more nodes at once, etc). I don't see video happening.

This abillity would take on a whole new perspective after amulation and station scenery gets introduuced.
I think I like it.

Never thought of it in that perspective. That would be cool.

I have suggested something similar in the past:
Grid Snapshots Basically, a tool in the game to allow intelligence gathering pilots to take a 3d snapshot of a grid, and then share it with their fleet / corp / alliance.
Fleet Map Tools & Shared Bookmarks A set of features allowing fleet/wing/squad commanders to add shared bookmarks, and draw circles & arrows onto both maps to visually demonstrate intended fleet tactics. This could also be tied into the grid snapshots.
The benefits of this approach instead of a simple shared 2d screenshot, are both increased functionality, and a smaller database footprint... the datasize needed to store object/pilot ids and x,y,z coordinates should be considerably smaller. ---- I belong to Silent Ninja (Hopefully that should cover it). |

Some people have already created programs to do this. Unfortunately, I don't know if they are for sale atm...
