I plan on getting a Ubuntu Computer soon, and I am wondering if EVE will run on it. ________ Fan-Made EVE Poster |

I was using 10.10 for awhile and it ran great. I would highly recommend going with an nvidia video card, they seem to give less troubles. |

Do you think CCP could run one Ubuntu on one of their private servers? If so, then they might be able to test how it performs compared to the other servers, such as Duality, Singularity, and Tranquility. ________ Fan-Made EVE Poster |

In theory possibly, could require some rewrites but I think they are heavy on python on the server side also which could help. The database interaction would probably be more work to move as the sql standard is somewhat lacking in the standard part. (Standards are great so great that every one has their own) But on the other hand they could test to run only the server nodes on a Linux machine and use a windows machine for the sql server.
In practice very very unlikely as CCP is a microsoft shop from 3D-graphics to database server. The only odd bal is that they are very heavy python users.
If wine can run the server is harder to know, would be a kinda cool thing to try.

I don't know. The medium to large fleet lag and the travel lag (hand-off) between system servers is bad enough without adding the extra overhead of compatibility layer mechanics.

Eve sol servers will mostly be game engine that spends very little mips on system calls. Wine calls will be tiny compared to the running Python/C churning the data.

generally works fine for me. though quite often after patch (though not always) have to do a complete reinstall to get it working again. |

I am using eve on ubuntu since 2007.
Currently i am on ubuntu 11.04 64-bit with a nvidia GeForce 8600 GT graphic card.
All works fine, running multiple clients simultaniously.
there are however some issues with the current nvidia drivers wich cause some crashes (roughly about 1 crash every 5 hours of playtime) and i can only have audio enabled on one client at a time (i have not looked into that as it does not bother me that much)
like said earlier if u get a new machine for ubuntu...try to get a nvidia graphics card and use latest WINE (search forums for steps on how to install EVe on linux)
enjoy and have fun
