I have often wondered what this game would have been like from the start if there was not three characters per account, but just the one.
The obvious differences would have been things like, character trading would be incredibly hard to accomplish. Scouts would mean a real scout. Not some throw away NPC shuttle. Pirates would not have had a hauler to fetch them supplies from Jita while their main spun ships with a -10.0 security status in low sec. Podding a cyno kestrel in low sec would have more meaning knowing he has a clone to replace that would be more and more expensive the older he was. Obviously you can't turn back the clock and change this because the cat is already out of the bag so to speak.
What other things can you think of, minor or major, that would be totally different if EVE started off with just the one character per account?
@ CCP, what influenced the decision to have more than one character per account and why three?

You answered your own questions, why do you need us or CCP to do so?

Sure would be a lot more player interdependency. CCP seems to want to promote more of that but CCP killed their own game.

well, who knows? Maybe they'll delete all the alts, and refund the lost skillpoints to your main for re-allocation :)

I remember their "power of two" promo a year ago--offering a discount for a second account, so sadly alts are just going to be the norm till Iceland's Mega-Volcano finally wakes up and buries the EVE servers in hot lava.

The EVE servers are located in London, England - not Iceland.

Ummm, I'm confuse? Is this a question? NVM! The answer is yes, we have 3 characters per account, only one can train at a time.

I have 5 accounts, 15 characters. 4 mains, 11 alts.
If there had been one char per acount, I'd have 5 charcters, there would be no mains or alts.
What would be different? Nothing. All 4 mains can fly covert Ops, 2 of the 3 on the 5th account can fly covert Ops. All the mains can act as scouts for the other mains. The alts just increase my PI harvest.

Nothing, because everything you listed is mostly done by people with multiple accounts. Even alt scouting in a shuttle is barely better then what you can figure out from the map. For it to be really useful you need to do it with a second account.

Who cares? The main problem is multi-boxing, not ability to create different characters on same account, it's normal for any MMO and doesn't affect the game much.

Edited by: Mamba Lev on 25/05/2011 15:45:13 CCP gave you 3 slots to wave a carrot under your nose, letting you only train one of them so you saw the advantage of an alt and then have to buy an account if you wanted him to do more than just basic stuff. Shame their programming, QA and game design aren't up to the standard of their marketing. --------------------------------------------------

This.
You really think that the ability to fund a PvP-char with another industry char that you only log in once in a while, does NOT affect the game?

there would be less anonymous dishonest behavior...
'look I steal billions, now I log on with different character! Bye Bye'
Eve would be great with 1 character per individual - no cheating, spying or noob****... You **** up your life, biomass and start over. KOS would mean a something.

When Eve Online came out, it was already the industry norm to have multiple character slots. When Star Wars Galaxies was in beta there was a rumor that there will be only 1 character slot available and that was met with outrage. There was also very little information about the game so it was easy to mess up your character back then. With 3 slots you had the option to make a new character once you learned more about the game without deleting the first one. And if you were a Brutor, the empty slots were great for Intaki alts with mass production and production efficiency .

I had an idea I shared where the basic account would be only a one slot account. That account could be upgraded with more monthly fee ofc. You could add more slots, more toons that can be online at once, and more trainible toons at one time. This would get ride of the need for one player to have muiltpule accounts but yet he can still play as many toons as he wishes.

what if you could create character only once per account?
Sure, it would stop all botting and RMT related ****.
If you were attached to your in game character, eve would be a quality place. Your life - your character's fate, both unique. You would not want to spam, steal or make bad impression of yourself, unless you want to be on ban list in every constellation.

Eve would probably DIE if it was limited somehow to one character per player.
I don't know ANYONE that has played the game more than a year that only has one account (I'm sure there's a FEW of you out there somewhere, but wouldn't bet on it).
Eve actually is SMALL on "characters per account" - almost every other MMORG offers you at least 6 and some up to 14 characters per account. Eve on the other hand doesn't "specialise" characters as much, there are no "character classes" so quite a bit less reason to have lots of "alt" characters.
Multiboxing has been part of MMORGdome for well over a decade now. It's NOT going away, and Eve in particular makes it a LOT more attractive than is it in most MMORGs.

No more throw away forum alt spammers, no more keeping track of 15 alts while hunting 1 guy. Sure he may still have 5 accounts, but I'd take that over 15 anyday.
Power to the movement I say. Anex multiple chars associated with an account. 1 per account sounds far to me.
