I really like the idea of incarna. As long as it's optional. I LOVE the concept of setting up shops and interacting with stuff through pretty interfaces when i want a break from eve.
But when I'm trying to dock, grab a combat ship, and undock for some pvp that extra few seconds of load time could make the difference.
I thought CCP was in a war against lag, not supplying lag with new weapons.

Looks good over-all. I'm glad CCP scrapped their old Incarna ideas and are taking a more iterative approach. I can't wait to run my own bar and sell drugs!
The commodities strewn about the CQ need a darker feel. Children's protein puff cereal doesn't go with my avatar that looks like he's going to beat your face in.

Will the check box for "do not load station environment" work? can i not clutter my screen with stuff thats gonna overload the graphic card?
Is there an option to NOT use the walking in stations, or are we FORCED AGAINST OUR WILL to use it?

This is just great, I really like the concept. Definitely makes it more immersive. This is what I like about EVE it gets these constant stream of updates that makes it feel like a freshly released game instead of being a tired, 8 year old one.
Do you know how many MMOs disappeared after a few months/years and some (most recently FF 14) failed within days of going online? You can count the successful games on your fingertips and the really old ones that are still going have a dwindling player base. EVE is the energizer bunny of MMOs.

I want incarna I am excited for incarna, can't we just leave the current captain's quarters as a test server demo? a small room is by no means worthy of the title incarna. that and I would love an opt out option, I really like the current hanger and ship spinning.

Amazing. Nice job to all you devs. This is something I've been reading in the forums for ages. Don't mind some of the old not wanting change.
I still have fond memories of Freelancer and Freespace, games that probably inspired you.
I do hope, that coming with these series, user interface gets some love as well. That's probably onde of the higher barriers to the game yet.
Keep it up!

Just started playing Eve Online recently and this is a great change.
You want mining? Blowing up ships? Suicide ganking? -> It's all still there, CCP isn't taking any of it away.
As I see it CCP is building up the social aspect and I love that. Will help with immersion a lot.
**Also, very interesting that CCP has chosen to release the first part of Incarna on the Summer Solstice.

I really don't think 'Please don't FORCE me to load your dress up dolls add on CCP' is an over-reaction. It's more of a constructive suggestion to help anyone who doesn't have a $1500 or more computer purchased in the past year to play eve without excessive lag on loading the 'worthless visual fluff' that incarna is.
What's good for the game is more interesting and engaging content. This is 'get out and watch TV in station'. Like I keep saying, this is detrimental to eve if CQ takes more system load than minimum in space system load. No reason to make it a compulsory 'feature' if it's more system intensive than space at all. Especially not when there's not added functionality to the station for not being in your ship.
Right now, All I want is to make sure that CCP keeps in mind that not everyone has the ability to run the full graphics clients well, that includes people who bought their computers recently.
Eve has always been one of the less system intensive MMOs on the market, and I hope this trend continues as it keeps the barrier of entry low allows more people to play, and overall enriches Eve online better than a 0 game mechanic version of 2nd life that uses Eve currency to create minor isk sinks.
First of all, you don't need a $1500 computer bought recently to get good performance in incarna. My $1000 or less computer from 2 years or so ago gets 60+ fps on duality at 1920x1280 res with 4x AA on stop trying to make that redicilous and unfounded argument.
Secondly what do you expect them to do when releasing Incarna otherwise? Release one big expansion with all of it in there and just make their customers power through the inevitable bugs and headaches that will come with that? The way they have chosen to release incarna IS the best way for them to do it because it will allow them to deal with a smaller number of issues at a time.
My $800 dollar computer from this year can barely pull 20 FPS on the lowest settings... So really going with an unfounded claim here.
I expect CCP to do what was stated in the past, make walking in stations OPTIONAL.
You spent $800 on a computer and can barely run the game, what are you running on integrated graphics? Did you buy a pre-built system or buy parts and have it custom built? What are you specs on the system? Did you ask someone who actually knows about computer hardware what to buy before going out to buy a new system. If you spent $800 on a new system and are having trouble running EVE I'd have to wonder how you managed to do that, cause I could literally go out today and buy a bunch of random parts and not manage to build a system that has trouble running EVE at full graphics.
Seriously post your specs so we can see where your problem is.

+1 for the request to be able to NOT load the damn environment...

Until now IVe been about meh about this expansion but this has made me want it now!!!
Saying that though - I would rather you waited an extra week or 2 (or even a month if needed) to make sure it is READY before it goes onto TQ than rush it to meet the deadline. And I dont mean CCP level of finished I mean actually finished.
Although I cant wait to use this I would like to know do I just see my active ship or can I see other ships I own or other people's ships that are docked (finally a way of telling what that neut that's docked in our statoin is in!)

Great Blog!
I'm REALLY looking forward to this, and have been ever since WiS/Ambulation was first hinted at.
I've played with CQ on Duality, and I'm quite pleased with how it's going. I can't wait for it to hit TQ and to go on from there
For the record, my PC was built over 2 years ago, and runs the test CQ perfectly with minimal loading times. I can only imagine these will get even faster with optimization and running on the TQ hardware (which AFAIK is a lot faster than the hardware Sisi and Duality run on) so I'm not really sure why people are having the issues they are.
Good job CCP

I don't like Incursions! I want them made optional! I don't like bubbles, they cost me time, and time is ISK so I want them made optional! I don't like >insert personal pet peeve<, I want it to be made optional!
Srsly, I don't think this is something that should be done. Next time CCP is introducing something new, everyone & his dog will demand it be made optional, because it infringes on *their* vision of New Eden.
I understand the worries about hardware and graphics demands - my 2008 Acer laptop may also have a hard time with Incarna - but I won't pass judgment on that until I've seen the final product, which Duality should not be representative of..

Edited by: Random Womble on 25/05/2011 18:02:22 I am another that does not want to have to load into the avatar station view its a waste of resources and time even if its optimized it still wont be as fast as the old view and no doubt will still be a much bigger resource hog not something those of us with multiple accounts will appreciate.
I am fairly sure that at some stage it was stated way back that we would never be forced into WIS/Incarna if you did not want to and even if I do not have to use the ui in incrana its still forcing me into it in some ways (on a side note having briefly tested it and decided I could not care less if I did want to use it ever i would like the option of a first person view).
Plus where it really sucks is no ship spinning.
Give us an option to keep the old view and if you wanted to add a wow factor for the ship sizes you should have designed it so that switching between the current hanger view and incarna would have caused the camera to zoom in past the giant ships down onto the tiny person that is your avatar.
P.S. when do we get our capital jumping effects back its been long enough

Originally by: CCP Zulu When you dock your ship, your Captain's Quarters will replace the current hangar view
Just pointing out that this is a big mistake. You guys have been pretty insistent about the immersion-inducing nature of this EVE add-on, and this kind of space -> avatar transition is anything but immersive. There is absolutely no reason for the capsuleer to always leave the pod when docked when all the current tasks can be performed remotely from the pod.
It is especially sad to see this because all of the graphical assets required for the ship-spinning view are still in the CQ client, and the developer resources to keep this view in the game would be minimal. This feature does not even require any changes in the Incarna design.
So why not keep it? Making it optional will make a lot of your customers happy. Those who complain about performance, immersion, gameplay focus can opt out of auto-disembarking, while those that can't wait to walk can select to forgo the ship-spin view. A complete win for everyone.
And when you do actually add some content to Incarna, players will be compelled to exit their ships to experience it, even if that involves upgrading their computers.

I don't get it. We're way deep into futuristic tech. Pretty full-blown trans/post-humanism is the norm (among capsuleers anyway). So when I see this, all I have is confusion and questions:
- I am essentially a mind in a pod, my body probably only needs to be physically transferred between ships because maintaining clones in each and soul-jumping between them is technically unfeasible (for whatever reason). WTF is my motivation for engaging people in person, avatar or real body? Even today in RL, we're embracing text and audio alternatives to personal contact, wouldn't a setting like EVE take that to the Nth degree (like the original interface already has)?
- If I could be ambushed and killed in a station somehow, then again, why would I ever leave my ship? No small arms fire getting through that armour. Remote interaction (as we have now) FTW.
- Is there some law that requires all people have the exact same appearance at all times? If so, doesn't it only apply to non-lawless space? Why can't I decide to be a hovering crystal brain orb one day and a set of conjoined multiracial septuplets the next?
- I'm a hyper-rich paragon immortal and the best I can afford is a couch, bunk, and TV? I can own entire stations and planets, but all I can manage is a couple dozen sq. meters of plastic paneling?
- I have dozens of ships with crews of up to thousands, but there's no room on any of them for a custom private cabin when I'm outside my pod? Instead I'm stuck in what is probably leftovers from a post-revolution Minmatar affordable housing project.
- Why do I even need a TV/Computer to interface with all my wheelings and dealings, when I already have a direct feed spiked through the back of my neck while in a pod? Wouldn't direct, accurate, non-haptic interfaces (like we already have) be infinitely more efficient than wandering between wall screens and poking at them with a physical avatar's hand?
- Hints that in the future, we can conduct backroom deals in person, in dark corners? Palm a drug/cash swap? Dramatic, yes, but wouldn't it be easier/cooler/more realistic to do this in private com channels, in the dark of empty lawless space, beyond sensor range of nearby stellars (like we already can)?
- given all the crazy advanced brain science in EVE, doesn't it seem unlikely that I'd even NEED to sleep?
I just... I just don't see it. Please, CCP, get back to your visionary posthumanist/cyperpunk roots. Incarna would be very appropriate for Star Wars, but not for something like EVE; it's barely even science fiction.
If you really want to go this way, though. Might I suggest a distinct title to hold it. Separate subscription for "EVE: Citizens" or somesuch. Concept: You are *not* a capsuleer, just a regular Joe/Jane trying to make their way in the world. Are you a taylor, a barmaid, a slaver hound? Only you can decide! Populate the EVE universe and fill your own tiny little corner of a tiny little space station orbiting a tiny little moon! It's connected to EVE like Dust 514, but basically an optional expansion.
tl;dr: +1 for a spaceships-only option. I'm disappointed my money is supporting a WiS that isn't at least conceptually consistent with the rest of EVE.
