Edited by: Blacksquirrel on 25/05/2011 19:57:00 Edited by: Blacksquirrel on 25/05/2011 19:56:23 So reading one of the dev posts from "we answer all your questions." Someone asked why say defender missiles can't defend a fleet or a gang. The response was essentially because of the lag it would cause. As missiles in general cause more lag why isn't a turret system in as well? Or instead?

Granted I suppose even a turret system could add lag, but that wasn't answered. Furthermore (I suppose this is a suggestion now) might make destroyers useful again as a fleet defense platform. Or add anti drone turrets as well (flak cannons?)
But really why no defensive turrets if missiles are no bueno for the servers?

Would be a interesting idea. I especially like the idea of a drone-killing flak cannon. Could make a small/med/large size each with different dmg/tracking like normal guns

The way i see it is if you try to add a defender turret it could only defend against missiles incoming to you in which it would be as useless as the defender missiles, if you was to enable it to defend against missiles headed at another one of your fleet members then it would end up multiplying the lag since it would have to check every missile on screen, check if its a valid target then shoot. This is similar to how smartbombs make lag since they have to check every object/ship on screen. If you've ever seen a video of any smartbomb fleet, a group of 20 of them bombing 100 ships will slow things down alot. FROG! |

I was walking past a Phalanx once when I was in Iraq and it went off. Possibly the loudest gun I have ever heard in my life. Scared the poo right out of me. SCHALAC HAS SPOKEN |

Lol we were flying in to drop a patient off once, and didn't know the guns were up yet. They began to track us due to our speed and descent rate. (time saves lives) Needless to say they needed to be tweaked a bit. Also seeing those go off in the night is a rather amazing sight.

Edited by: Culmen on 25/05/2011 21:05:34 Well it's simple really. I think we should re-do the effects for smart bombs and rename them CIWS.
Change the animation to make random gun lines going all over the place.
The purpose of a CIWS is to destroy missiles and ships that are either too small or too close for main weapons to hit.
This fits the role smart bombs are used for in eve. and further more why do i even need a sig? |

the 120mm of an M1A1 went off right as I was running past it. Still can't hear properly out of my left ear

How would this work with concord and aggression? If you smartbomb neutral missiles do you get a GCC? You do if you attack neutral drones.

That could also help balance supers a bit. A turret designed to kill fighters/fighter bombers? I can't heal stupid

It wouldn't be too difficult to set these turrets to only attack targets that are aggressive to yourself and your fleet members.

Wrong, it doesn't need to pick which target the missile is headed for, just have it stop ANY missiles coming from the target ship. Which is how I believe NPC defenders work. Prospecting! |

Missile-based CIWS is replacing gun-based.
Also, 'defensive' turrets would allow bigger ships to effectively kill smaller ones, like frigates, messing with game balance significantly.

I can assure you that no they are not. Anti missile missiles are used against larger missiles (cruise) or in the case of Israel because of the population zones. The guns were all developed after the above. (Most were intended for use against aircraft.)
Also how would turrets that only fire on missiles kill smaller ships? Anyone can fit smaller guns on to a BS now to track smaller ships if they so chose.

[Jack Nicholson voice] Son, we live in a world that has physical simulation restrictions, and those physical simulation restrictions have to be guarded by men with guns. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Kattshiro? Men like those devs have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep for the thread, and you curse the QA department. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what they know. That the thread's death, while tragic, probably saved countless manhours of work. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves countless manhours of work. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want them peeking at that physical simulation, you need them debugging the code. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. They use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. They have neither the time nor the inclination to explain themselves to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that they provide, and then questions the manner in which they provide it. They would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to. [/Jack Nicholson voice]
