So with the custom paint jobs feature it's occurred to me - there an awful lot of freighters flying around that, like city buses, can be used to carry corporate logos or branded paint schemes. Will we now see a rush to sponsor the most active courier pilots or leading contenders in pvp tournaments [who are likely to be photographed/video'd] and turn them into vehicle billboards? Who would use such a fleet and what kind of risks/benefits would be involved?

Potentially!
I would find it intriguing for Red Frog to be able to paint their freighters mainly red and have their logo on them so that they become EVE's NYC's Yellow Cabs equivalent.
Unless you can paint most of the ship a custom colour then it might not be noticed too much except at large events or video streams.

I think its fairly interesting. I would love to see coordinated color ships doing.. stuff.
There will probably also be coordinated ascii art with ships, or full on space paintings.
The downside is that with its tie to real money these decorated ships are probably going to be a tastier gank target than undecorated ones. It could be that Red Frog making all of its ships red would be akin to a huge "gank me" sign on every one of them.
Would it be that painted ships would be targeted and primaried more as well?
We could have a natural selection effect that keeps things, or most things, unpainted.
Regardless, I think its a very neat idea in principle, and the potential for advertising is neat, too. Especially if there is a large scale embrace of the painting system.
Go make a new disaster, that's what I'm counting on. You're someone else's problem, now I only want you gone... |

Edited by: Mu-Shi Ai on 28/05/2011 23:55:00 The one risk I see straight away is that, with something fairly ubiquitous, like a well-known freighter company, painting your ships so that they're instantly recognizable could end up putting a bigger target on your back.
Also, do we know how the painting system is going to work? For example, will you be able to set a design with one purchase, or would you have to purchase a new paint job every time you lose a ship and buy another? I hope it's an unlockable, per design system. Otherwise, I could see it becoming too big a hassle to really catch on at a broad level.

Edited by: Fred Barbossa on 28/05/2011 23:59:33 Most people see other ships as boxes in space. Would be a cool thing to do for vanity sake like 100% of incarna content.
I wonder if it could be a good ploy for lag tactics to paint every one of your 1000 ships differently so enemies trying to load grid have a bigger disadvantage. If ccp follow the pattern with walking in station their won't be a button to turn it off in favor of running smoothly.

My combat alt would definitively pay for such a paintjob for exactly that reason: tons of kill rights. -- And then there's of course the thing with it getting FPS even slower than the character creator, heating up video cards, taking a noticeable time to fully load ... |
