I've recently started running L4 missions in a Maelstrom and I'm somewhat at a loss for what drones I should be using.
Typically, I've been carrying 5x Hobgoblin IIs. The issue is that while frigates, destroyers, and cruisers are quite easy to kill, it still takes a fair amount of time to take down battleships. The damage from light/medium drones is negligible to a BS, so...
My question is: what should I use, drone-wise, to take down battleships more quickly? Should I go for 3x heavy/5x light drones? Or would 3x sentries/5x light drones be a better choice? |

It depends... are you speed tanking? Use heavies. Are the rats really spaced out? Use sentries.
Personally i would switch guns to 1200's and keep the mediums and lights.
Heavies can be good for closely packed rats |

for mael i would go with med set as u have no means to deal with frigs. When/if ull get some uber drone skills (all 5 except racials) u can switch to 4 heavies for some DPS increase. Tl;dr: arty + meds |

Usually run 3 heavies and 5 lights, this gives you anti-frig and extra DPS for up close and personals with other BS's.
That way you aren't constantly going back for you sentries, and you can still speed tank (yes, you can actually speed tank a mael again cruise missile lobbing BS's) |

You shouldn't be asking this unless you're in a dedicated drone boat. In any other ship, drones compliment the set up, letting you kill frigs/cruisers more reliably.
If you want variety tho, take a flight of each damage type of light drones (you should have exactly enough drone cargo for it), and match damage appropriately. BSs are you job, not your drones.
In the beginning, the Universe was created. This has angered numerous people for many different reasons and is widely considered as a 'bad move'. |

The forum ate my reply. In short;
Angels, use 5 warriors and 5 valks
everything else, 5 hobgoblins, and 3 sentries of the appropriate damage type.

I also solo L4 missions in a Maelstrom. I recommend that you fit artillery and only use your drones to take out frigates/destroyers/cruisers as you pick off the Battleships.
If your problem is that the NPC battleships are too close to make arty effective (due to tracking issues) then fit large autocannons with a tracking enhancer or two (and 1 gyrostabilizer if you have the slot) and let 'em rip. Wondering what to fit? Check out EVE Survival Mission Reports - these will tell you at what range you'll run into your targets in each room.
As for me, I tend to fit autocannons if the NPCs are going to be 50km or closer and charge right into them. I can take out the frigs usually instantly with the 1-2 rounds of autocannon while they're at enough distance that there is no tracking issue, then pop cruisers on my way in (when they're within 45K, usually 3 or less volleys) and then by the time I'm up close, there's only Battlecruisers or Battleships left. It makes missions a lot faster than kiting, IMO. |
