I'll admit my knowledge of Dust514 is limited at best, since I do not own a console and don't care to. I haven't been following its development very closely and I can't really find much info about how its going to affect EVE.
What I do know is later this year when Dust514 goes into Beta, there is going to be a brand new part of the New Eden universe that I do not have access to (unless I want to spend $400), and that this new part is going to affect me somehow while I continue playing the game I've been playing for several years now on my PC.
Can someone tell me how this will affect your average EVE player?

Well in the E3 video a planetary installation one shotted a dread. Other than that not entirely sure.

Yeah other than that, and that EVE players will be hiring the Dust mercs... I don't know either. I'm just concerned about how this will alter the game I've invested 3 years in.

I've been playing since 06 so I understand where you're coming from. I'm sure more info is to come in the week as Dust will have an E3 booth and there will be interviews and people playing the game etc...

What are your concerns?
That Dusties can go out on a rampage and kill any PI installation they like in the universe? Afaik, they need us to hire them.. so other podpilots would need to want to burn your soil for that to happen.
That PI stuff get's more expensive? Needed to happen anyway, otherwise no podpilot will fork out the cost that are involved with the dust-action.
That they can shoot your ship in orbit? Probably part of real-time-campaigns down the road.. stay away from planets that are fought over? Don't nuke from orbit if you can't take the heat?
That there might be console kiddies in your corp? So what? As long as they can't spam local, which is a bad implemented social/intel tool anyway..
So, what are your angsts? What are you afraid of?

You mentioned some of it, its obviously going to have an economical impact through PI resources, but what about Dust514 running off of Aurum?
How will I be forced to interact with Sony if I want to interact with Dust514 players? I mean some sort of sever would have to be shared between CCP and Sony in order for Capsuleers and Dusters to interact right?
Would I have to be shooting Dust514 players first in order for them to shoot back like you said? What if I were roaming low/nullsec and sitting at a planet while D-Scanning and suddenly I get hammered by an orbital railgun or something?
I'm just speculating here (same as you), but I'm mostly afraid of the unknown here because I'm going to have 0 control over something that's going to alter the game I play.

Finally a thread worth reading, asking valid questions like how will Dust affect my EVE play?
Will it affect only 0.0, or other security systems as well? I think I saw somewhere that Dust was integrated with Sov warfare. So that, if it would happen, would mean your high sec and low sec PI structures would be safe. Would be rather inconsequent too, but meh, it's CCP. Inconsequent is their middle name.
I somehow fear that CCP hasn't figured it out yet them selfs how to really connect Dust with EVE. Just look at the dev blog at the Dust site. It's extremely vague.

So? CCP said Dust will be able to stand on it's own, if podpilots don't provide the battlefields (ie. PI isn't worth fighting over or we don't use the optional impact of Dust for sov warfare). How do you think Dusties get their gear if they want to fight on 'npc' maps, that we didn't 'create' for them?
Also, PI needs to cost more as at the moment it's a joke. There is NO interaction in this part of the game at all currently.. something that's bound to change and was envisioned so.
Originally by: Joseph Dreadloch How will I be forced to interact with Sony if I want to interact with Dust514 players? I mean some sort of sever would have to be shared between CCP and Sony in order for Capsuleers and Dusters to interact right?
CCP will have it's own PS3 server.. read the devblog about the latest updates to the servercluster that's located in London. It has currently room and processing capacity for more than just Eve-Online. CCP will have bought and installed that stuff there with an idea how to use it.. the PS3 deal will have been decided some time ago already, at least before they invested into the gear in London.
So, you will interact with Dusties the same way as you interact with other Podpilots.. just on a different 'level'. Contracts and some special chats..
Originally by: Joseph Dreadloch Would I have to be shooting Dust514 players first in order for them to shoot back like you said? What if I were roaming low/nullsec and sitting at a planet while D-Scanning and suddenly I get hammered by an orbital railgun or something?
Don't ask me. Probably even CCP won't know for sure yet. My best bet is you have to be in 'nuke-em-from-orbit-mode' for them to shoot at you. And this 'nuke-em-from-orbit-mode' will probably need some campaign going on right then at the surface. So, if that backyard is worth anything, you won't be alone on grid while d-scanning
Originally by: Joseph Dreadloch I'm just speculating here (same as you), but I'm mostly afraid of the unknown here because I'm going to have 0 control over something that's going to alter the game I play.
Again.. the tie-ins of Dust are marginal at the start at best. Don't panic yet. Leave that to the wussies

My guess is that Dust won't affect EVE at all. If we already have huge lag with a fleet in system, how will it be when there's also a few hundred DUST players running around on the planets in that system and shooting at ships?
Or Dusties running around in Jita?
Not going to happen.

My guess is that it barely will affect eve, due to a combination of balance issues and CCP not giving what they promise. That vid was reasonable nice, but it mainly reminded me about PI. Also said to be alot it never has been nor will be.

basic idea on what i think it is i declare war on you. i want to take over, not kill, your planetary interaction systems i hire dust mercs they fight dust mercs you hire ( or if you dont hire any, a random match is assigned to be your side but get no support from eve players) I win, i get your stuffs you win, i lost money that i used to support my dust team, items like tanks and arms, as well as the price of hiring them...
if i dont want to take over, and just nuke the planet i can... so technically Dust isnt needed at all. it just saves me isk if i win.. its like a gamble

Not going to happen.
So you can see what's going on at those other grids in system or even in another system right now in Eve?
Also who says, that the dusties control the surface-to-orbit doomsday ray? Maybe some other ship on grid (the owner of the PI structures) needs to target and trigger it (like POS guns)?

Thanks.
Relevant quotes: 1. CCP Praetorian: "This degree of socialization becomes even more significant when you factor in how vital corps are to both EVE Online and DUST 514. ThatÆs because EVE and DUST share the same player-run corporations. That is to say, EVE Online players can join DUST 514 corps. Likewise, DUST 514 players can join EVE Online corporations. These social institutions are crucial to the long-term prospects of DUST 514."
2. CCP Praetorian: "The surface infrastructure constitutes a fairly significant percentage of the corporationÆs bottom-line. A capsuleer mentions that your corpÆs fleet has not been mobilized and that the enemy has already moved in and have begun capturing the OCC (Orbital Command Center)."
3. CCP Praetorian: "DUST 514 will, as EVE Online does, have a dynamic virtual economy and market that offers the tools that will give you a competitive edge, when used skillfully. Players are able to purchase different gear to equip before deploying into battle, using InterStellar Kredits (ISK), the in-game earned currency of the EVE universe, or through real money currency, called Aurum (AUR)."

I personally believe that to attack a players' PI structures you will have to "declare war" on them for the duration of the combat campaign. The enemy player can muster up his forces, you muster yours, and both sides launch their dusters to the planet to fight, and both sides warp to a special battlefield in orbit above the planet that they got when they went to war. Whether or not pirates can probe out the combating ships and participate with the dusters.. well... I'd like to think not, but this is Eve after all :) _______________________________________________ "If you want to taste the ground, feel free to attack." - Kenshin Himura

Questions; a) Can EVE CEOs kick DUST members and can DUST members kick EVE players from their corp? b) How are we supposed to communicate? EVE gate? EVE voice? 3rd party software? c) Has a DUST corp CEO the same tools that are neccessary for EVE players; corp wallets, POS rights and such? How can a DUST CEO ever know what to do with EVE only options? And will EVE CEOs get additional DUST related corp management tools?

Questions: a) Will EVE players be able to trade with DUST players or at least exchange ISK and AUR? Especially when in the same corp this seems vital for good cooperation, it would seem strange if a filthy rich corp can't even suppport its own ground troops? b) Will EVE traders for example be able or even be mandatory to transport stuff between DUST trade hubs? Or will DUST players be able to instantly buy things from the other side of the universe? c) Will EVE players be able to manufacture DUST things and sell it? And will DUST players be able to do some industry that they can sell to EVE players (like moon goo), or will DUST players drops tags or whatever that's useful for EVE players?

1. PI structures will be valuable enough to lose ships over. Currently, for 25m, I wouldn't give a **** personally. On a corp/alliance level, nobody will care if it just becomes the new 'moon goo'. In fact I think it would be welcomed as a far more interactive and dynamic way to distribute the lions share of wealth in game. The issue is ofc, dust wont sell well and has no shelf life on ps3.
As for fighting over resources, properly, **** yeah! Just bear in mind that I, like a lot of people are already not too fussed about spending game time fighting to protect some dudes isk stream, none of which I see any of etc. Making PI in to the new tech moons of eve is a great idea, but better not make it exclusive to blobs and botters.
2. Eve players accept and welcome a strategically important new aspect to their gameplay (how significant is yet to be explained ofc) which most of them can't even participate in (unless they buy a ps3). That sounds loltastic right there.
I like the idea but to be perfectly honest, if Dust (and MT and all the other stuff ccp is floating right now) starts to effect my eve experience detrimentally, I'm off.
I'm sure a lot of other people will wonder why they bother too. Which is a shame because I really think the 'future vision' is a good one. Platform issues aside.
Also, also, since all my income is from pi (because I refuse to do pve crapness), if my revenue stream is decimated, again, I'll be off if the only other way to make isk in this mmo is to run missions and sanctums.

No level 4 production planet is worth a carrier to me. Is it to you? No I reckon, as I speculated, dust will go some way toward deprecating the moons in eve. If so, that will be awesome as long as we get a pc port within the first 12 months of release. If not, it wont be I don't think (sadly).

A lot of good questions here. Those are going to be covered in the upcoming dev blogs, so keep an eye on the DUST website for more information. All I can say at this point is that EVE Gate will be a useful tool for interaction between EVE and DUST players.

DUST could be cool as long as the DUST players know there place. They work for US and do what we tell them. We got seniority and they better realize there little bitty pea shooters won't stand up against our firepower.

Dude, calm down, CCP knows their game design(even though some other stuff is not always great), you can't deny that. I think Dust514 will be revolutionary (probably not right away, but in the long term, yes). It's not a coincidence that we're getting Incarna on PC now, and adding planets the way they want to (from what i gather) will add a lot to the game. I speculate there will be a lot of crossover (again, in the long term) between both games, and that it will make Dust worthwhile, and lots of new PS3s will be bought, as well as new eve subscriptions. The only thing that worries me, is the choice of console, as it is a proprietary platform, how long will it be supported? and how long until we have to switch over to a new one? --- Please CCP, buff the Legion! |
