I enjoyed it. My take: Theodicy, Dust edition.
Also interesting that they chose Stain (home of the Sansha) for the Dust trailer.

I really liked it. I was a bit worried at the start about the vocabulary, being illiterate and all although a whole lot less then a month ago, but it quickly got to setting the stage for the narrative. I really liked the feel of being the last remaining of your team with just the drones going about their business.
I do think the Enheduanni are a step too far as of yet. Since there is going to be a big leap in technology concerning cloning it is not unreasonable to assume there are new parties that will have the ability to communicate directly into DUST soldiers heads. We know of at least one that can do it already somewhat. Also I think TonyG alluded that ability of Jamyl being explained in the novel.
PS Billiant idea: That should be a feature btw. Small squads of DUST soldiers with perhaps the backing of some a poor(iskwise) capsuleer making some extra ISK by, either when two other parties are fighting or after the fighting, scrounge, steal, kill, grief and or salvage.

I was rather excited to see a new Chronicle out, doubly so that it revolved around Dust514. I enjoyed it, the atmosphere in particular, though I think I missed the ending so I'll have to go back and enjoy it again. ~Gnosis~ |

Real nice touch explaining the atmosphere and grit tacked on with the stress on a guy who thinks he has to travel halfway across a torched planet on one foot. Lucky guy found himself a "crutch" to get by. No normal person should ever be okay stranded someplace like that digging after everyone else has met their maker. So a part deux-tois after this explains it all?
If this is the first of the style of Dust Chronicles to come, as i wrote in my "Writer meet Artist" in this forum, Im more with the sense I can truly see this kind of story given visual treatment in comics medium although they would end up much more condensed. The cowbells are already there with DUST and for the first time as an Eve fan, Im actually growing a little partial to looming over ever political spacey dungeon opera stories for ground and pound militia instead. Im sure my publishers would say so too. But, to be fair a Dust story should provide a fast, gritty open design and interactive story with locations giving person to person settings facilitated against proportional land and air artifacts (people and stuff) more view and room to breathe.
Im already hard at work on a comic that has waring militarized groups for a strategy mmo game called "End of Nations". But the comic has mostly people in it unlike the actual game, its not just tanks and guns. Hence why Dust to me looks like good potential material to work with. Although Id still want to be able to draw a few Eve ships here and there to sooth my little techie ego.

Actually, it answered quite a lot.
1. The main character is (or was, at least) a Valklear. 2. The Voice is most likely an Elder.
From Theodicy:
Everything hangs in the balance; the destiny of worlds rests with the outcome of these days. Warn the others that the remaining Elders must not perish. Send this message with haste! Immortality awaits, Minmatar! Go!

Thanks for posting this up...haven't checked the Dust site for a bit. I'm surprised I didn't get an email about part 2 coming out, considering I've signed up for email notices re: Dust514. Sounds like someone over there needs to get things together. ~Gnosis~ |

Definately has the feel that Sansha's Neighbourhood has a lot to do with the Minmatar, that chilling couple of lines at the end:
Originally by: Stranded Part 3 Suddenly, her grip tightens, and I feel the muscles in her neck stiffen as her head lifts itself and fixes me with gray, dead eyes. And a voice that isnÆt NeeraÆs speaks from a face that is no longer hers.
ôWhy do you try to forget? Memories, Traveler. TheyÆre what make us who we are.ö
The darkness swallows me.
Hints that the Minmatar are trying to avoid a past, and that something is trying to awaken an old ethos buried in the Minmatar backbone.
The Main Character is "co-ordinated" by a voice in his head that leads him to a buried artifact that is obsidian and non-reflective.... and after his killing blow on his partner, the voice in his head speaks through her corpse, almost like someone or an entire collective are piggy-backing on the shutdown of neural pathways.
Its comparable to the notes about Sleeper Drone's appearance in terms of Technology replication. I did wonder if informorph telepresence was hard-coded into the pod/ship interface mechanism and if this is why the Zephyr is undetected, with Sleeper's only "waking-up" when a pod pilot is integrated with an energy generator / engine / artifical electrical field, as though they need to be reminded to regulate energy supplies / fuel.

Edited by: Ciar Meara on 26/07/2011 11:57:35 From what I understand all of these "creepy" things like the dead speaking to him are changes in his memories as the "traveller" tries to make Balac see something, or learn something or tell him something.
So far these are interesting chronicles, but I feel they are quite wasted on dust 514 at the moment. They build a story on a world where we know nothing of. Some smaller "spotlight" articles should come out soon where the world, the weapons, the politics etc of the dust side of eve becomes clearer. Even more information about the races at this point should be welcomed, since the avarage person on the dust site is not going to plunge into the backstory of the eve-online website. (I would, but hey)
I do like how the story tries to tell us so much in small increments like the weapons, the salvage drones etc. I also like the way how we are shown how they see the capsuleers and how the world of the capsuleers fits with their more "ordinary" existence. Some small spotlight articles on the things that where touched upon in the chronicles so far (weapontypes, salvagedrones, cloning) would be welcome and interesting. oh and Stranded part 4 |

even new eden chronicles didn't start with complicated internal monologues and long storylines. They had quite clear and specific short explanations about certain events or inventions.
As the goal of the Dust 514 franchise within new eden is to tap into another market and thus new players a slow buildup of these short explanations might not be a bad idea. I love the fact that there are new chronicles that explain these things, but I have been reading about even since 2003 when their first webpage was released, not everybody will have the interest to keep reading long stories they don't understand.
I fear the dust stories need more bling - Hilmar getur ekki tala= vi= ¦ig n·na, hann er a= fara ß japanska Tfskuverslun.

Seriously, who quotes themselves? Anyway...so again I learned about the new chronicle via this thread because I don't check the Dust514 site daily. Why not? Because I half expect that the email list I signed up for on the site would alert me to such things. I guess I was wrong...again. ______________________
