I was sitting here thinking, the textures in EVE really are bad, outdated, and some are just downright awfull. Some ships more than others. But then, how do you give us better textures without people playing EVE on calculators complaining.
The answer came to me from a few other games I play, that allow people with modern PCs to tick a box, that starts a download of ultra HQ textures.
This would take little effort from CCP ( they will like this part) as they have already done the work. When you create a raw texture file, its already mega HD, we get a dumbed down /compressed version in the game so people with celeron CPUs and 128MB ram don't QQ.
Personally id love to see this added.

It's EVE, not EvE.
And are you playing on uberlow settings or something?

Sounds reasonable, I also think it's a good idea.
There's no need for people with old PC's to have 16Gb client if they won't use most of graphic shaders and high-res textures anyway.

They are reworking the models and textures.. at the moment you're looking at a mix. As for HQ textures... load up a Legion or Scorpion and see if that's HQ enough. Won't get much better for the next 2 years.

As much as the attitude of the rest of your post is crap and full of boohoo, I can't help but agree.
I'd love to see a set of textures for the client that are a lot closer to the source models.

i think the textures are quite nice, so far i dont see the need to try and `improve` them, I have a high end gaming PC not a calculator BTW

Hmmm, however I have just looked at the new Maller, with the new turrets on it... The turrets are significantly higher res than the ship, the ship gets pixilated while the turrets don't. Having the option for super high detail would be nice, but it should separate on/off options for in space and docked. so you can use lower textures in space, and then super high whilst in your hanger. __________________________________________________

It'd probably be more work than you think but I do agree that I need a 16Gb install why? As an example, Alliance logo's. If I've never looked at GoonSwarm's alliance info (or a member of one of their corps) why do I need their logo on my machine? True it's only what? 3Kb but it all adds up. Another one that springs to mind is limited edition ships, you never see them (in some cases because it's dead) I don't need those textures on my drive.
Ya know, someone living in Empire probably doesn't need cap ship textures either, bar the Leviathan as there's an NPC one.
So yeah there is a good argument for the client being able to download what it needs on the fly and a mechanism to trigger the client to check MD5 hash's to get new ones. It would allow CCP to refresh textures without having to push patches, just tell the client to check hashes and if it's one it needs it gets it.
