With Dust coming to PS3 in 2012, the game will be releasing on a 6 year old console. How long do you think it'll last?

Which would make no change at all since PS2 games on PS3 is really outdated and look like !ñ#%#&%/ñ(ñ compared to PS3 games !

If it is a failure, a month or two.

If it's a failure, at least 1 year after it becomes obvious it's a failure. If it's a success, about as long as EVE.
P.S. It will follow a similar model to EVE, in that the "box" will contain the initial install plus a month's worth of expected MT spending credit, and all expansions/upgrades will just be downloaded. You will probably be able to get it for free as a download without ever buying a box from a store. And when PS4 comes around, you'll just download the PS4 client and keep playing. _

and concerning life itself... well yeah 1 year may be a good value

I think it depends on 2 things:
a) The pricing system (will you HAVE to pay to play it properly, or is it just convenience stuffs)
b) If CCP continues to make updates (includes new shiny maps, and, eventually, remaking of higher quality models)

Not anytime soon, that's for sure. You have to remember that the PS3 is one of the most successful game platforms in the console market. The Wii and the Xbox 360 are its top competitors. However, given the lack of graphics provided the Wii and the revision and recalls that the Xbox 360 went through (I had two X360 consoles - they all ended with red rings of death), I don't think the PS3 has much to worry about regardless of its age. The PS3 is a much more stable platform compared to the X360 (though, lockups are becoming more common in PS Home). In fact, the X360 had to undergo a face lift along with hardware upgrades to better compete against the PS3 (but it still can't play blue ray).
So far, the only major setback for the PS3 is its price tag (still the most expensive game console in the market) and its recent hacking incident on the playstation network.
I'm not biased in anyways towards game consoles. I played the Xbox 360 (with Xbox Live for several years), PS3, and the Wii and so far my experience has forced me to favor PS3 due to its stability, graphics and its free multi-player access. Of course, the X360 still has awesome graphics, but the only reason I still like the X360 is because of Halo.
Think about it. The Xbox unit in general, from the original chunky black box with a big "X" on it to the sleek black tower with Kinect, didn't really take off until Halo: Combat Evolved came out. Hell, to this day, me and my friends hang out together on saturday nights playing slayer in Halo 3 all night until 4am. We play the Guardian map to decide who can choose the subsequent maps (1st place chooses, followed by 2nd place, and so on). I have to admit, some of the smack talk that goes around can sound really gay to an outsider at times ("Hey, Sntr Widestance, you got the most medals for beating with your hand and attacking people from behind followed by a splatter").
Anyways, I don't know how the PS3 garnered so much attention (perhaps it was the blue ray player), but somehow it never needed to drop its price nor change its looks nor upgrade its hardware yet. Microsoft had to drop its X360 price tag due to decreased demand.

Well, maybe people will move on, but not the people who are worth hiring as mercenaries. Ever heard of chrome hounds? A few years after it's release only about three thousand people were still playing, but they were damn good at that game.

Okay, this entire post was probably the best thing I've read all day. It bounced around a topic that was only peripherally connected with the one at hand, and when broken down, not only reads like a 5th grader's three paragraph essay, but hits many of the major points of internet debate. Thank you, Henry Haphorn, you have brought a tear to my eye.
On topic, I think Dust will not survive to the end of the PS3's life cycle, because at this point it'll be 2013 at the earliest before we see the PS4, based on past precedence of consoles being announced around E3 one year and coming out the next in the fall. I personally hope that Dust will do better than that, but it seems like CCP would have done better to work on expanding the PC market, bringing on FPS players as well as EVE players, instead of breaking into a new market that tends to be harder on niche titles. But they have people with more experience than myself helping them make decisions, so they possibly know what they're doing.

Edited by: Mutnin on 07/06/2011 21:37:30 I wouldn't say "failure" if it dies. Lets all remember the console game market is typically a cash grab market. The kiddies have short attention span and are typically off to the next flashy FoTM game a few months later.
The long term aspect will likely just come from EVE players that CCP should of just catered to in the first place with a PC game.

CCP have already hinted that you'll be able just download the game for the next version of the PS3.
I wish people would think before posting, do you really think CCP are primarily developing this game for old consoles or might they be developing it for the PS4 to get all the 'oooh, oooh, shiny, shiny' FPS players.
P.S. Eve players are already paying CCP, they don't need us to play DUST514, they want new players and those are the people they will market and aim the game at.

This may not be far from true, unfortunately. Most fps's really don't live that long. There are rare exceptions, but most become ghost towns after the next big one comes along. Who knows if Dust will even be one of the big ones in the first place. He put... creatures... in our bodies... to control our minds. He made us... say lies... do things. |

Edited by: VaMei on 07/06/2011 22:15:28 FPS players will expect new things to keep the game from getting stale. New weapons, armor, battle maps, battle modes, heavy equipment, skills & other toys.
If CCP Shanghai can deliver on that, make it all work, and keep good game balance, it has a chance. If not, it'll last about as long as it takes for the next publisher to release a new title. Take a long look around and place your bets.
The persistant universe and character development will only carry the game so far, since many shooters already have more character development than some players want. Some of FPS players (i.e. my daughter's BF) expect to be fully developed and competitive with long time players before their game rental runs out, and think anything else is too deep.

It'll last a long time. I played Halo 3 last night with my roommate (new dog chewed the reach disc) and there were 15k people online. That's after 2 Halo iterations, god knows how many Call of Duty games and whatever other shooters have come out on the console since 2007. My point is this: if even these iterative console releases--supported only for a year with a few pricey DLC packs--can find themselves with a core group of players that stick around for a long time, what do you think is going to happen with Dust especially if it can offer the following:
- It's free-to-play
- It will be supported with regular updates
- It (at least hopefully) will be a top-tier quality game
- It's the only console MMOFPS
- Despite the howling on the boards, there's going to be plenty of EVE players who will enjoy Dust (Assuming it doesn't suck)
What self-respecting FPS player on the PS3 would turn down the chance to sample the first MMOFPS, especially if it's a free download? You can look at the console market and proclaim 'These people will never adapt to the idea of a persistent game.' That is a terribly short-sighted stance to take. Most of the market has never been exposed to the idea of a persistent game world, much less a game world that ties into a PC MMO. You can look at that and, again, say 'These people won't play this kind of game' but I see a huge, untapped market of people that would love to play in a persistent world but don't and can't and are unaware that such a thing can even be offered to them on a console. Or that such a thing even exists. CCP has a chance to create the Console MMOFPS market. Remember the game that brought the idea of the persistent world to the seething peon masses of PC gamers with low-spec systems who couldn't even play minesweeper with drooling on their keyboards? It did terrible, right?
I doubt that a console could support a fully-featured MMORPG, but an MMOFPS? They certainly can. The only thing that would make Dust fail is if it's just a **** game--not the choice of platform or the people playing on it. And that's something we just won't know until it's released.

I don't play or even own a console, but I know a lot of people that do, (ages 20-40), and they all seem to play a title for 1-2 weeks and then churn it for another game using trade-in store credit at Gamestop. A lot of them churn their games so fast they only have to come-up with $5-$10 ever to get a brand new title, and several like to brag about being able to pull that off as a part of their "fun".
Dunno' how or if this would affect Dust, but all my friends seem to have ADD when it comes to console games in general. I guess CCP may be banking on all the kids that take their medication wanting to keep playing.
Suggestion: Make the packaging awesome and shiny and include collectible stuff so the urge to trade it in to Gamestop for store credit is not so appealing.
The accumulated filth of all their sex and murder will foam up about their waists and all the ho's and politicians will look up and shout 'Save us!' and I'll look down, and whisper 'no.' |

Why don't you go visit the DUST514 website and have a look at the game, before you go deciding what its life expectancy will be. I might actually be switching from PC to PS3 to play it; in fact, I might be getting rid of my PC because I'm so sick of all this BS with hackers, botters, and the internet generation in general.
I love PC graphics sure, but I'm more interested in multi-player games than single player. FPS is cool, and DUST514 is persistent, and some features that make it really cool. The only issue I see currently, is if the skill base/training is like EVE, then 5+ years down the road you'll have the same situation we have for new players in EVE now. That is likely only to happen if DUST has some form of system which allows players to build up large stockpiles of ISK with which to leverage galactic control however. Skills alone won't do it.
I'll keep my main account open and character training for now, but will probably, (at very least), make the switch to DUST and PS3 when it becomes available, and make my mark in EVE that way. Something would have to change in a big way here, for me to even think about staying around after.

I was extremely excited for this game up until this recent anouncement. 1 I dont own a ps3. 2 I never plan on owning a ps3. 3 limiting this game to just one console is a massive mistake, honestly who cares if the graphics have to be lessoned a bit to fit other consoles. I still know plenty of people who wont ever be buying a playstation who were also looking forward to this game. 4 theres just way to many other shooters to compete with at this point with no end in sight to the wretched CoD, Halo, an MoH games its just going to be way to far overshadowed and too limited to ever take off.
I give it half a year before people forget this game even exists. ----- You can try and try you cant be me. |

The sooner it dies the less money they will lose. If it's marginally successful in the beginning (it won't be but whatever) then CCP will continue pouring time and money into it as it slowly dies and continue neglecting Eve even further. However, if it bombs right off the bat they can cut their losses and get back to work fixing internet spaceships.

Hm.. good that it's free then, no? They can download it and play it for free! No cost involved. How will they gonna like that?
And then get this, the game will be updated and expanded on a regular basis.. *drumroll*.. for free also! This means Dust514 - Punkbuster and after that Dust514 - Warpigs and after that Dust514 - Boarding Party, while CoDx or HaloY or MWz or BFx will just count up and charge for every new reincarnation and expansion..
And to top this off, it's in a persistent world, where you skill up like in Eve. Look at us cracks.. what does bring us back to Eve or keeps us most of the time? The other players we play and socialise with, the persistent world and the characters we built up. The console 'kiddies' didn't really have this so far. This will stick with some of them.. not all, I admit. But Eve doesn't stick with everyone either.
A shiney box wont help Dust.. it will be the stuff that CCP shouts out all the time going for Dust - the social interacting persistent world, interconnected with Eve. That will hook and keep some of em.
