For the past week i've been using my Cormorant as my mining ship to jetcan mine. Everyone keeps on saying that I should train up and get an Osprey to use as a miner but I really don't see the need.
Right now I have five mining lasers on my cormorant and can fill its bay to over half every rotation. Think I might be able to install a sixth laser once I increase my engineering skill a bit more.
Im using five XECL drilling beams as my mining lasers due to their overall low costs to install. So Im wondering should I just keep on jetcan mining with it and not care about the Osprey?

As with most things in eve, the answer is really up to what is your plan? Are you shooting for going to mining barges as soon as possible? then stick with your corm till you get to the point you can pilot a retriever. Are you going combat? You'll probably need the cruiser skill sooner or later anyway then.
It all depends on your plan and how that factors in. :)

I would be more than happy to help you out. I am a full time miner myself. If you are interested in full time mining just let me know and I will do what I can to get you squared away with skill plans and ship fittings.
If you plan to go full time combat/missioner, I cant really help you.
LSS - We'll talk business if you want to be a miner.
Edit: To answer your question, forget the osprey. Yes its much better but dont worry about it. Too late now. Just go straight for the Retriever. Then from there to the hulk.

Edited by: Alexia page on 12/06/2011 16:26:15 when your just starting out it really doesn't matter much. It does not take long to get into a retriever. If you are not looking at long term mining a well fit Rokh with mining upgrade modules will out mine a retriever but a covetor or hulk can not be beat if you are planing to continue in the mining industry. check out Advanced mining guide if you are really interested in mining.
An osprey will out mine a cormorant even though it can equip less lasers it gets a 60% yield bonus which more that makes up for that. If that is what you were asking.

By the time you can fit T2 miners (takes hardly any time, to be honest) you will outmine your cormie in an Osprey by a bunch.
You can only fit 3 T2's on a cormie, or 3 on an Osprey.
With basic skills, thats a yield of 238 on the Cormie, or 428 on the Osprey. Stick mining upgrades on (which fit on the Osprey but not the cormie) and you then get 508. Basically, twice the yield.
Getting twice the ore/ISK per minute invested is why your friends are suggesting you switch.

The Osprey doesn't get a +60% yield bonus, it gets a +20% yield bonus per level of the Caldari Cruiser skill.
At max skill, that's a +100% yield bonus. The Osprey can fit 3 Mining Lasers, but it functions as if ithad 6 Mining Lasers fitted due to the bonus.
In addition to that, the Osprey can field 4 Mining Drones. I can't recall whether the Cormorant fan field 1 or zero, but it's a little extra income. The Osprey may also be more durable (not sure about this one) and has no capacitor problems with 3xMiner II whereas the Cormorant might.
Pimped with 3xT2 cargo expanders (which used to be expensive), the Osprey also has a cargo hold of close to 1000 m3. I'm pretty sure the Cormorant can't get anywhere near that.
Anyway, if the Cormorant can fit 6 Mining Lasers, then it suck as well as a max-skill Osprey, and if it can fit 7 Mining Lasers - preferably T2 ones - then it sucks better than an Osprey using Mining drones.
It sounds as if the OP has some fitting problems, having to use meta level Mining Lasers, whereas the Osprey ca fit 3xT2 easily.
