So, with the advent and subsequent proliferation of the genuinely 'super' supercarrier, the use of dreadnaughts has dwindled to almost nothing.
Do you think the upcoming DUST planetary orbital bombardment is a planned 'fix' for dreadnaughts to give them a viable role again, rather than going down the tricky route of rebalancing them as a ship class?

Absolutely all balancing has been put on hold on the altar of Incarna. CCP wants to get the total space experience out there before going back to fill in the gaps. They're gambling that everyone will be so in awe of Incarna and Dust514 that they'll forgive a year(s?) of broken gameplay.
Short answer - everyone expects supercarriers to be nerfed into the ground.... eventually.

You won't be able to orbital bombard anything.

You forgot the part where the dreadnought gets one shotted by a planetary gun.
Dreadnaughts are only useful if the DUST players on the ground don't have a planetary gun, which is unlikely.

Does anyone REALLY believe that there will be any kind of gameplay interaction between EVE and DUST?

Seriously.... I highly doubt tehre will be any combat interaction between EVE and Dust it will be more on a logistical level.

Well true, maybe they will still be effective though. Not one shot a dreadnought effective but probably enough to deal some good DPS to battleships or something.
...Oh and I'm the guy who founded the city between Eastshire and Westshire. Nobody visits it though. |

It's a way to get rid of the Dreadnought "problem" though .. ^^

Edited by: Ryan Starwing on 11/06/2011 20:45:37 I wonder if you will be able to dd planets.
I give us a week till all planets become extra belts
Edit:I will be ****ed if ccp doesnt let us at least do massive orbital bombardment.

From an FPS perspective orbital bombardment would kill gameplay. People play FPS to shoot each other in the head. Orbital strikes would make things really imbalanced.
From a logistic perspective I doubt that it would be possible to synch EVE and DUST gameplay simply because EVE is much slower.

So the Dreadnaughts Primary Role will be a PI Support Ship in the Future.
What a humiliating way for a class of Super Battleships to die.

I don't, but I do expect CCP to talk about phasing it in slowly after the game launches.

It could work if Orbital bombardment could be called down by ground units. So if there was a Dread in orbit it would be at the control of the ground units.
Just the presence of it would give additional capabilities to the guys fighting on the ground. |

I personally can not see anybody "orbiting" a planet in their 1.5B fitted dread to protect a PI asset that can be torn down and rebuilt in a day. They will just get ganked by a roaming gang.
There is absolutely zero incentive to invest time/effort/isk in "protecting" PI.
Unless they make some changes to how PI functions (IE when you claim a planet nobody else can build on it) I do not see eve pilots caring too much.
WIIFM to waste any of my time to protect a PI planet?

"Hey, I'm bored." "Wanna go find a planet with dustbunnies and grief them from orbit?" "Yeah, ok." *pew* *pew*
PI in its current form doesn't justify the existence of dust. There will need to be planet based sov structures, like a TCU or upgrade hub literally on the surface of a planet. Or cities that actually somehow make a decent amount of isk, and not the few million per month you can get per planet now.

Can you guys imagine that the current content of PI is just a brief glimpse of what lies ahead until the release of Dust514?
And that those damn globes of rock or gas will be worth defending in future, at least in 0.0, so that there might be interest in bringing a capital to launch an assault or defend it? |

0.0 Dust will affect sov. Highsec Dust will be mission/PVE based.
