The trick is of course, to ignore your front and center, expand your actual combat overview, and make sure you have it set up for just PvP, then forget about what you're looking at around your ship, and just use that. Limits distractions, but then you're just clicking on a spreadsheet of reds. A lot of new players don't get this and it has nothing to do with intelligence. It's mostly that the combat system is 90% pen and paper when they're accustomed to, and expecting, something else.
This is by far the worst advice possible for new players starting to PVP, and yet I see it repeated time after time. Positioning matters!! If you lose situational awareness you will end up doing things like orbiting one target right into the web range of another, or in a plane that leaves your transversal velocity low to the guy with the really big guns which really hurt when you don't keep up your transversal. You will end up trying to warp away to planets which are behind you instead of the one you are already traveling nearly straight towards.
In general, you will end up doing a whole host of stupid things that will get you killed or cost you the fight when there were better options. I am sure we all remember that one blaster boat that continuously found him self pulled away from the rest of the fleet, surrounded, and then destroyed on every single CTA. That is what happens when you stare at your overview and do nothing but approach or orbit targets.
The overview is a very important tool, which contains a lot of information you need to be aware of in a fight. It is also imperative that you have it configured correctly for the situations you can find your self in. However, those pilots who do nothing but stare at it will find them selves just about as successful as those who just look at the brackets.
Edit: because I fail at grammar almost as hard as at internet spaceships :P

'Tyrannis harnesses the visual cue capability of AlienFX-compatible DELL machines and keyboards. The multi-colored perimeter lighting will now pulse and change when triggered by critical game events including: Low capacitor Warp scrambling Autopilot waypoints and destination Cargo full Cap recharge levels when in jump-capable ships'
I don't have a AlienFX capable system although I did have a look at hooking the Alienware FX API and using it to send controls to an Arduino to control a flashing light and scrolling LCD matrix. Gave up due to lack of time.

Easiest solution, move the icon that shows your scrammed into the speed bar on the HUD.

Edited by: Alara IonStorm on 12/06/2011 22:03:33 I think the message should stand out more, it is hard to read which ships are Scaming who before it disapears. Sometimes it does get mixed in with Drone and Gun attack notices.

Oh great, let me just go trade in my custom PC for next to nothing and go buy a Dell.

Well, that's the advice I've been given, aside from scrolling back to furthest view and using that, which of course gives me no awareness of my ships facing and positioning. The only thing furthest view does do for me is show me lots of flags, and give me the ability to actually click on them instead of the overview. Close-up, you just end up chasing them with your mouse which doesn't work obviously.
Close up, you can't see anything anyway, and mid-range gives you just enough to tell you you're in trouble while still limiting the view of your ship. Right-click menu and align to will get your facing right, and your ship moving in the right direction. Clearly, the brackets won't help, as it's widely recommended you turn them all off.
So all you really have are colored flags, mid-range, (enough to see the gate), and your overview. There really are no other tools available to you, aside from organizing your modules to activate with Function keys in order of use, and keeping your mouse over the overview and your fingers on the CTRL key or spamming the Warp shortcut. Not much more you can do, and you're probably--99.8% chance--going to die horribly anyway. Really, if it makes you feel better, you can get up and go grab a coffee; chances are it'll end the same way either way.

Well this has been very interesting for me, obviously I've been missing a trick (or two) on the overview. However, the interface could be so much better. Take the Warhammer (WAR) one. Just about everything can be moved and sized, and with option for custom interfaces. While the EVE interface has got so much better of late (like you can offset the central console/buttons), I would be nice to see the whole thing opened up to custom interfaces. I'm sure the community would embrace this and really come up with some excellent designs (thus saving CCP a job and getting involved in endless debates over changes that some players don't like). While I wouldn't hold myself up as an Uber PvP player, many years of playing DAoC (mostly) and WAR (and a bit of LOTR PvMP) has left me quite profient as getting various Logitech gamepads, G13, and advanced gamepad set up and programmed up for (relatively) competent playing. But Eve I find tediously difficult. For those that argue its a space game, I have played Wing Commander and Space Command (to death), as well as a few other not so good space games. All of this rambling leads to my final point that the Eve interface is just about the worst I have ever come across. I accept that it has a lot of information to display, but I fail to agree that our current design is by any stretch of the imagination optimum. While we have all become used to it, and with degrees of proficiency manange with it, for new players a better interface would be so much less of hurdle to cross. For those that argue that Eve is not a simple game, I agree, but a good interface does not have to equate with simple interface (or a dumbed down one either).

That would be pretty stupid, alternatively you could actually do what I was suggesting, hook the API calls and re-direct them to do something YOU want to happen.
Actually, CCP, how about you just expose the clients internal API that interfaces with the AlienFX? It would be much easier for us to write some nice little tools then

Having some warning lights about different thigns that can be done to your ship would be great on the HUD. Instead of only having them only on the overview where there's dozens of ships and other thigns to look and worry about, maybe have a small icon appear for every remote effect that is being used on you at the top of the HUD, with possibly the option of ctrl-clicking it to target said effector. And I don't just mean Ewar, scrambling etc. but everything. - Warp Disrupt - Warp Scramble - Web - Target Painting - Sensor Damping - ECM - Tracking Disruption - Sensor Boosting - Remote ECCM - Remote Shield/Armour/Hull Repair - Remote cap transfers - etc.
Basicly an icon showing you the effect, and when you hover over it, you get a tooltip with who and exactly what they're using aka: Xenuria is warpscrambling you with 2 warp scramblers. Lady Spank is remote shield repping you with 2 large shield repair
Possibly a little indicator light for points should be nice too.. showing howmany points you have on you, with a hover for the exact number. ( Green = 0 or less points, yellow for 1 over, red for more ) this should ofcourse take into account any stabs you got fitted.

How the hell can someone like the op, that can't read a simple message that you are being pointed, nor even marginally acknowledge his surroundings, will be able to see or pay any attention those list of things.
Seriously, if you have to have flashing lights sirens and someone poking you to make you aware you are logged in...what is the point of actually playing the game?

Your solution: Over Complicated
My solution: Add a new state to the overview "Pilot is warp disrupting me". Allow this state to have a color/flashy color assigned to it just like alliance, fleet, enemy, corp, good standing people. Next time someone starts warp disrupting you, they start flashing <insert color here>. No new HUD, not forced on anyone who is too cool for school, capability already built into current client, everyone's happy. Thank you, come again.

Love it when the neigh sayers get on their high ponies.
Of course the ewar icons should be in a proper column
Of course the most important bit of information should be more obvious.
No having it highlighted somewhere else doesn't stop it from existing in the overview.
Personally I'd like to see ewar notification on the targeted ships icons. In the same way that I can see outgoing effects of my ship, I should be able to see incoming effects from them in the same place.
Not registering the scram icon is something I guess every player does once (at least). Hailing it as 'eve has a steep learning curve' feature is fail - its pure UI design badness.

I just don't want more stuff slopping all over my screen. I see the icons on the overview just fine. I could get down with the person flashing a color though, and it's already built in. Does anyone have any reason why they don't like my suggestion three or so posts up?

If it is something that you can choose and not forced to look at it like "The Door".
