Edited by: The Cleansing on 14/06/2011 02:20:26 I am trying to learn research and have a question. I tried to research a BPO to an ME level that BPO calc said was perfect. This is more of an experiment to test the waters and understand it. I was a little surprised when the job gave me the error: "The production time of this job exceeds the limits. Please choose a lower batch quantity."
A. What is the batch quantity refering to, this is a BPO research job? B. Why is there a time limit?
Also, can you further research an already researched BPO?
This is in a corp POS.
Thanks.

I could be wrong, but I believe batch quantity is the ME number you are trying to run.
There is a limit, not sure why but I believe it is 30 days. In a pos, you can reduce the time than in a Station, which allows you to get more ME levels but still capped at 30 days.
Yes, you can research an already researched BPO.
Perfect ME is almost never needed because of the diminishing returns you get by researching a BP higher and higher. For instance, If you research a Frigate BPO to 15, you are doing pretty good. If you went to 50, you might save a few thousand isk (which is nothing) for the time and money you spend on POS fuel...it just doesn't make sense.
In general, you should figure out what a decent ME is for the item. As a simple rule, I do ships at 15 and everything else at 50 if I can. That works for most stuff. Rigs are an exception (I believe) in that you can perfect ME those but it's a small number compared to trying to get perfect ME on ships or mods.
Hope that helps. ======================================================== "Any fool can criticize, condemn, and complain - and most fools do." - Dale Carnegie

Originally by: The Cleansing A. What is the batch quantity refering to, this is a BPO research job?
A job is a job is a job.
There is a 30 day, or +1 M.E./P.E. level, or 1 copy, or 1 run, limit on all slots.
Originally by: The Cleansing B. Why is there a time limit?
To prevent people from monopolizing slots.
Originally by: The Cleansing Also, can you further research an already researched BPO?
Look carefully at the window. Notice the plus sign + for ADDITIONAL levels next to the input field. It isn't an absolute level you are specifying!
Example:
+10: Start M.E. 0, Finish M.E. 10 +10: Start M.E. 10, Finish M.E. 20 + 5: Start M.E. 20, Finish M.E. 25
I don't recommend researching anything to "perfect" that you are not planning to make a huge number of runs of. This generally means only ammo is worth the time.

This will help with finding the "right" ME and PE for your blueprint: Linkage
"Right" being the operative word in terms of what you think is the right investment of research time into your blueprint.
