DDoS are often distratctions, used to hide a hack. Taking servers offline, is not a knee jerk reaction, it is, best practise.
But im sure with the years of experience in the industry you have, you were aware of this.
And yeah, I am qualified to speak on this subject.

The originating IP's would have been forged. One of the mitigation's for DDOS is to require of an IP that makes a request to the server to say it again. When it doesn't the request gets dropped. Just one of many strategies to load shed a DDOS.
I made another post, I think it best that FBI investigate on the insider of Lulzsec (AKA the owner of the phone number.) The chances are, the insider is probably leading several attacks. If not, it is quite possible that insider would lead to other people who are responsible. Considering their reputation, they are pretty ignorant and are bound to make mistake. |

Edited by: burr right on 15/06/2011 00:16:27 06/15/2011 00:10 UTC and Server = "Not accepting connections." Your COO indicated that your systems are back up and staff members report, "Back in business." It doesn't appear as though the IT hand knows what the Managment hand is doing. Is Managment speaking? Or is this noise from another orifice. |

Or it could be just that there happened to be a phone number that = lulsec and it's a red herring, which would be my bet. |

Most of you are idiots and don't understand the implications of a DDoS attack on a large scale. CCP did everything right - they protected their assets and our personal information by not allowing it to escalate and shutting the servers down. If anything, we should be praising them.
In fact, CCP, can we give you skillpoints? |

Or that hack could already have taken place, and the DDoS was to get CCP to takes it offline and restart, which then wipes any traces of the hack still in non-stable memory. |

Originally by: Erik CoolBreeze CCP made the best of a bad situation. People asking for sp (even though they lost none) are just greedy. And as it is not CCP's fault that the downtime happened, no compensation needs to be given out. Good job CCP  (NOT sarcasm!)
Agree completely!
If it was CCP's fault for the downtime then sure. But they reacted appropriately and should be commended not harassed for free SP at every opportunity.
Thanks CCP!!! |

That is likely what CCP was doing for those six hours, checking to see if there was a hack. Now they are restarting the servers without worrying about removing traces.
And no, not all of us are uncivilized tools. Just some (you'll find em in any game). |

Considering they had a "call in center" for people to suggest targets, I wouldn't doubt if some of them get arrested in the next 5 or 6 months. |

I just noticed this Forum is not encrypted which then made me aware that when I entered my user-name and password to write this message, it was sent over an unencrypted, open channel. Which makes me aware that packet sniffers could be harvesting this information as we speak!
That aside: The only reason I am posting was to give a final report from Las Vegas, NV, that as of 00:25 UTC, login was still not possible. Good luck CCP, seems like you have some obvious security holes on your hands, including the one that just jumped out at me as clear as day!

I don't really care one way or another on reimbursement. I wanted to say:
Back in 04 when FL was getting slammed by hurricanes, I received an offer from Ford Credit to bypass making a payment on my vehicle for a month (even though the payment would be tacked onto the end of the loan for an additional monthly payment). They didn't have to, the hurricane was not their fault, but they offered in advance to accommodate their customers in the expected target area. I seem to recall other situations involving airlines in recent history that have reimbursed their customers for situations beyond their control.
That is all.

Don't doubt the stupidity of many.
As the "anonymous" arrests that are ongoing showed, quite a few people are idiots and failed to protect their identity when they joined the volunteer botnet.
Each one may be a minor player but then you get to go digging.

So since they did not know the extent of the attack or how to combat it right away other than taking everything offline, you would rather they had stayed online and potentially had your information stolen? Do you think before you speak or do you just mash the keyboard? Thanks but I would rather they had go offline and protected my information. If you want your information unsecured that's your business...because you're an idiot. In my opinion they not only acted responsibly but professionally.
Agreed...
There are way to many stupid people out there to give opinions on subjects they know nothing about. I'm amazed at the number of people I know who think they are computer experts because they can "surf the net like a pro" or because they "got a good score in tetris"
