Only against larger and/or slower targets. Against small and/or fast targets, you actually deal more damage with HMs than HAMs. _

For missioning HML are preferred due to range. You will loose a lot of the HAM dps simply by flying to get in range. _______________________ The best thing in EvE is Barrage M. |

I guess you're talking aboiut a Tengu. HMLs are prefered.
* far less travel time between groups and gates * less damage on small targets due to the fact that Guided Missile Precision and Rigor rigs don't work for Rockets, HAMs and Torpedoes; * webbers and scramblers (your worst enemies as Tengu pilot in L4s) can get to you much easier because you have to get close to them to hit them.

And against faraway targets, HML are infinitely better than HAM.

As much as I hate to correct Akita T...
Torrent Assault Missile: 101m/sec explosion velocity 125m explosion radius
Thunderbolt Heavy Missile: 81m/sec explosion velocity 125m explosion radius
HAMs are actually a bit better against fast, moving targets due to a higher exp. velocity. I know, it makes no sense when compared with the BS equivalent of cruises/torps, but hey... CCP for you.
*HMLs do, however, get the ability to use precisions, which are better against small stuff. But that's only with t2 launchers, and you need to spend ten valuable seconds reloading to them after you realize they'll be needed, and then another 10 when you reload to a missile that's actually decent against larger things... -------- Enemy corps raided into disbandment: Three.

You forget the GMP skill which only affects HMs but not HAMs. Same story with ZMA implants.
With L4 in the GMP skill (most people don't bother with L5 early) and no implant that reduces the HM explosion radius to 100m. Or 97m with a rather cheap ZMA100 implant. With L5 in the skill and a ZMA1100 implant, that becomes a 88.125m explosion radius. And that's with T1 (or faction) ammo, *not* T2 precision.
Meanwhile, HAMs still have 125m explosion radius on the exact same ship/pilot combo.
P.S. The drugs (Crash booster variants) seem to affect both HMs and HAMs the same way (unlike everything else) and therefore don't matter in the comparison. _

Guided Missile Precision
Skill at precision missile homing. Proficiency at this skill increases the accuracy of a fired missile's exact point of impact, resulting in greater damage to small targets. 5% decreased factor of signature radius for light, heavy and cruise missile explosions per level of skill.

Even if GMP would not be a factor at all (skill untrained, no ZMA implant), thanks to the different DRF (damage reduction factor), you'd still get to a point where HMs deal more damage than HAMs (it would just be for smaller and faster ones). Case in point, with GMP set to 0, no implant bonus and TNP5 (the worst possible combo for HMs), with a 50m sig, 400m/s speed target you already start dealing more damage. _
