Quite interesting. But this is just a fancy pump, until we can make artificial organs to replace everything else we've not gained much.
Though it does make me wonder if this is going to speed up overpopulation..

I propose we all just save ourselves the trouble and commit a planetary mass suicide. Those of us brave enough to not go through with it can have the whole planet to ourselves.

that is interesting and it makes perfect sense. That being said, I do not think, even in its potentially perfect form, that worries of this pump system solving all of the problems that typically coincide with a diseased heart, thus drastically increasing world population saturation rates is required.

As pointed out in a few comments; this article doesn't address variable blood flow.

The reason the blood does not flow at a constant rate is that the heart beats. The heart is not a perfect engine and therefore it needed the ability to pump at varying levels for it to accomodate the empty/fill rates of the atriums and ventricles at varing activity intensities. This beat variability assists increased activity as the heart can speed up and slow down as required by the body. Nothing in the body "needs" a variable flow rate to survive.
The first comment that mentioned variable flow rate mentioned that no one with this constant flow circulatory device would be running a marathon. Most people that would need this will not be looking to run a marathon any time soon.

Edited by: Vogue on 15/06/2011 22:28:05 I read some time ago that a running athlete replaced all his blood prior to an event to get an edge. This was banned as it was too ghoulish.

Overpopulation? If you took every person on the planet you could put them in Rhode island w/ 4m/sq of space per. Think about how small a space we actually take up.

What you heard about is the process called blood doping. A few months before a major endurance competition and athlete can have a pint or two of blood taken out of his blood stream and put in storage. Now that body will replace the lost blood and before the competition the athlete will then have said extracted blood transfused back into the body. This increases the blood volume by the same percentage as was taken out previously. This in turn increases the oxygen carrying capacity of the athlete and increase the duration and intensity that athlete can work at.
The dangerous side of this is that increasing the volume directly increases the viscosity of the total blood volume and this increases the potential of blood clots and the associated cardiac events which can lead to death.

I'm confused that some articles are saying this is the "first" of these devices; I remember another non-beating heart transplant (the full heart) a few years ago. I don't know how long the patient survived but he was released from the hospital and interviewed for the documentary about it. It might be one of those devices used as a "bridge organ" until an appropriate donor-heart is found. But they've been around for about 6-7 years now and were in clinical trial for a lot longer than that. Medecine has been continuously trying to find ways to replace body organs.
And I still prefer Repo, the Genetic Opera to the non-singing version of the movie. ;)

When they said Dick Cheney had no pulse, you thought they were just joking ?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick_Cheney In early July 2010, Cheney was outfitted with a left-ventricular assist device (LVAD) at Inova Fairfax Heart and Vascular Institute to compensate for worsening congestive heart failure.[142] The device pumps blood continuously through his body.[143][144] He was released from Inova on August 9, 2010,[145] and will have to decide whether to seek a full heart transplant.[146][147] This pump is centrifugal and as a result he is alive without a pulse.[148]

The most difficult organ to reproduce will be the liver. The liver is essentially a chemical factory, which constantly monitors the chemical make up of your blood stream and ensures that a proper balance is maintained.
It performs chemical reactions to render toxic chemical inert, it manages fat<->sugar conversions, in times of poor nutrition, it synthesizes proteins, amino acids and various vitamins that our body is lacking. Simply put, the technology we have which can accomplish the same functions as a lung would be a chemical manufacturing compound the size of a small city. ----------

Although it is not an "artificial" organ we are getting closer to replacing livers.
