I have been looking at how to add some DPS to my ships and have been looking at 'Augmented' drones. They cost a lot to buy, but do a bit more damage. Anyone out there who has experience using them ? Do they do enough extra damage to warrant the exorbitant price tags in your opinion ?

You failed to mention PVP or PVE but regardless...
They add damage, but split that damage across types. This may or may not be an advantage depending on your mission type but in most cases it's worthless, especially for something as simple as level 4's. You also have the risk of losing them on disconnect.
For PVP there's a lot of areas more worthy of pimping out on ships before you even begin to consider them. Unless you are flying some 8b Vindicator or whatever then I wouldn't bother.
Now worth using IMHO. ~~~

I've seen people use them in incursions fairly often. Guess they don't lose them frequently enough.

These drones have a lot more health. Much harder to lose to anything other then a d/c.
Are they worth the isk? Usally not. Only a few are worth it in rare cases.
I know of 3 I can think being worth the extra cost for how I use drones but that's it. I'm sure other people have other reasons.

They do more DPS? At least when introduced they didnt (well maybe effective dps, but not raw dps).

Edited by: Mocam on 18/06/2011 08:52:25 Each drone type has different benefits and drawbacks for using them.
T2's are better than T1's - faster, tougher, so on and so forth. The other types have different advantages and disadvantages to using them.
Faction - 2x the tank (shield & armor - structure HP is crap. 0 resists for drone structure.) of T2's. Better tracking than the T2's. Slightly lower damage mod. Slower flying. Expensive: heavy style runs about 6-7 mill each.
"Integrated" - less tank, lower damage mod, damage types split vs focused, slower moving... T1's on steroids is more how they work yet the price tag is high.
"Augmented" - pretty much top-of-the-line drones but the price tag can be staggering. Fastest version of the drones, damage types split but same damage mod as T2's. More tank than T2's so they can take more hits. LESS tank and lower tracking than Faction drones but much faster and heavier hitting.
If you can afford them: - T2's are the stock recommendation. Good price/performance from them.
- Integrated probably aren't worth the isk - they're a half step up from T1's yet cost around 3-5 times as much as a T2.
- Faction are expensive - around 6-7 mill each. Tracking can offset costs if you don't forget them and the tank means they don't get popped easily but each lose could buy you a full flight of T2's.
- Augmented... The price on them is the sticking point. They are the fastest and hardest hitting variants in the game but that price... 20m-50m each. Losing a flight of these... ouch.
Each to their own and it's your ISK. IMO - Augmented are way out of line for the costs.
here's a quick comparison chart on Warriors (evehq v2 screenshot).

No
-if you need them tankier, go faction -if you need them tracking better (tbh go faction omnidir) -otherwise stick with T2
The augmented drones are nice to have if you're a collector. I would never recommend their actual use. Ignore me

There are people using them in Incursions for their higher damage and hp. Split damage is fine on uniform resists. It's just a matter of keeping an eye on drones in order to not lose them, which I personally find a pain. With t2s, you can just ignore and pop out a fresh one when they aggro.
