Edited by: Neolithic Man on 21/06/2011 13:45:50 I use Eve Skill Monitor to keep track of my character training and isk on my Mac. However, right now it says:
"Your IP address has been temporarily blocked because it is causing too many errors. See the cacheUntil timestamp for when it will be opened again. Ips that continually cause a lot of errors in the API will be permanently banned, please take measures to minimize problematic API calls from your applications."
WHOA. My IP is gonna get PERMABANNED?
What if I hadn't noticed this change? ESM would have just kept running until I was totally screwed. I would have just woken up one day and never had API access again. Moreover, are the changes actually fixing any real problems? I have certainly never noticed any significant slowness issues with the API before.
This approach is unacceptable.
EDIT: Yes I read the patch notes before making this post. I quote:
Quote: Error Throttling ű the API will start to throttle third-party applications that generate a high number of preventable errors in a short period of time. This means better quality of service for everyone using the API.
That is a far cry from banning IPs permanently for issues their owners may not even be aware of.

Why? You're the one getting banned.

Thank you, but that basically says exactly the same thing as the patch notes. Neither of them mention permabanning, except in the error message. The blog itself only mentions temp blocking.
So what is it? Is the error message lying or what?

Edited by: Mister Rocknrolla on 21/06/2011 14:00:27 Devblog FTW:
Quote: We are going to be pretty strict about this but we'll ease up on it if the forums catch fire. The basic theory we used here is that if nobody is complaining then we're not strict enough. It's the same thing governments use when introducing new taxes - to find a good balance you need to be able to measure! So we're going to start with: if your IP passes 3 errors a minute your IP gets blocked for 3 minutes. We decided against 60 year blocks as the example above suggests, we're not sure our servers have that kind of an up- and/or life-time, although they are doing wonderful things with hot-swapping these days.
Note that the IP will NOT be blocked in the game itself or on other websites. The throttling only applies to the API.
The Error Throttling may very well affect your application, especially if it is fetching a lot of data from the API for many different players and corporations. By doing this we aim to protect the API from erroneous traffic that can be avoided by forcing 3rd party developers to design their applications in a way that minimizes repeated calls that return errors. This means better quality of service for everyone so we hope this will be well received by the masses.
Also:
Quote: <eveapi version="2"> <currentTime>2011-06-21 13:18:52</currentTime> <error code="904">Your IP address has been temporarily blocked because it is causing too many errors. See the cacheUntil timestamp for when it will be opened again. IPs that continually cause a lot of errors in the API will be permanently banned, please take measures to minimize problematic API calls from your application.</error> <cachedUntil>2071-06-21 13:21:50</cachedUntil> </eveapi>
BTW, they're also adding something called Incarna, in case you missed that, too.

Yes thank you, I read that already.
The dev blog says that there will only be a blocking time based on the number of errors generated.
The error message says that repeat offenders will be permabanned.
Do you see the discrepancy? Do you see why resolving it might be a teeny tiny bit important from my perspective?

Businesses that have public facing services have to generalize to stop the software applications using APIs calls excessively (as the result is a DoS type situation), so they put in "excessive" messaging to predominately cover their own backs if a third party app causes a problem.
I doubt a user will get their IP banned unless they are doing a DoS attack.

Edited by: JC Anderson on 21/06/2011 14:11:52 Right now (as it has all morning) the error I get is Eve back end database temporarily disabled.
It is possible that something is just messed up with your client and you are getting an incorrect and generic error message. Or the MAC client simply doesn't generate the same (correct) error messages as the PC EveMon.

What you don't understand is that you're complaining in the wrong place. You should be directing your ire at the person who wrote the app that is throwing the errors.
This isn't CCPs problem.

It is. Chribba sites have been banned too from the API. If you try to connect to the API server when it is down CCP is counting it as an error. Do it multiple times and you get a temporary ban. Keep doing it and it's perma.
I guess CCP will fix this. --- I don't know! I don't know why I did it, I don't know why I enjoyed it, and I don't know why I'll do it again! Bart Simpson. |
