First, a brief rundown of my client system specs: AMD Athlon II X4 (quad core), 4 gigs ddr3 ram, ati radeon 5770, gentoo, latest stable wine in gentoo portage, with ati-drivers 11.6.
Incarna broke for me at first because it claimed I didn't have a card that supported SM3, so I was forced to enable GLSL, which got it to load. However login screen would not show anything other than the ship flying through. I had ati-drivers 11.2 at that point still, so updating to 11.6 fixed the problem for me.
I'm only bothering to post this as a "here's one working" for my fellow linux users. Theoretically, it shouldn't be broken for anyone with the right conditions.

Worked first time. CQ movement is smooth but I'm seeing a lot of what I'd describe as "flickering white noise" - there's probably better terminology than that. :)

Everything outside Captains Quarters has not given me issues. Captains Quarters generally does not proceed beyond loading screen. Twice it has loaded, the first time there was no character model, almost no lighting, major texture issues. The second time I could see the character and actually walk around, however, there were still texture issues. I still cannot find a way to make it load consistently.

I haven't looked to see how far up the tree the Ubuntu repository is with Wine, but if you can, go with 1.3 or latest available "testing" version. I had a lot of texture crashing issues prior to my latest update with wine (which for me is 1.3.21).

I updated to 1.3.15 which fixed some texture issues; my character's skin is no longer neon green. The texture fuzziness still remains. By fuzz I mean tine patches of white pixels which alter whenever the shape moves.

Edited by: Grae Corvidus on 22/06/2011 09:03:12 Meh, client crashes anytime the CQ tries to load. Everything is good if I disable station interiors.
Arch 64, ATI 5850, wine 1.3.22, catalyst 11.6
Given others results I'm assuming it's the catalyst drivers. Maybe time for me to switch back to OSS, supposing they will work with xrandr rotate now (originally switched to catalyst since OSS fatal crashed on rotate).

My past research has shown that intel graphics require extra work, which may be answered by the next poster's question:

Grae, your setup is almost identical to mine so I'm not sure why it wouldn't work for you. I would recommend any desktop special effects be shut off and another test done. Also, in case that's not the culprit, let's have a look at your Direct3D regedit entries. If you have one, try a low-overhead desktop like fluxbox to test this out, so as to eliminate any missed special effects.

basically working without any glitches here, only framerate drops to about 10% of former value.
x86_64 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+, fglrx 10.11, wine 1.3.10
first test results:
under full load of one cpu core per client
aticonfig --odgc gives GPU load : 0%
which basically stands for low usage. two clients running goes up to about 22%, while load is up to about 74% on one client post settings change and new build-up of the screen.
these values are confirmed by temperature when running two clients at 22%
aticonfig --odgt gives only Sensor 0: Temperature - 46.00 C
under load from two clients it would go up to about 50.00 C usually.
most remarkably: if the network connection is severed the fps go up to former heights immediately. some sort of interdependence with the network?
will test against differnt fglrx and wine versions in any case, also translucency comes to mind.

This fixed my fuzzy textures as well, thank you. My CQ is now working great aside from the white box cursor when dragging.

Thanks Delfain, good to know a like setup is working. I should have provided a little more detail -- already running lean Openbox as my WM, no DE, compositing or effects.
I'm guessing you mean the D3D branch under the Wine registry tree, let me know if there are other entries I should include... been away from Windows for so long the registry just about looks alien to me now:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3d] "DirectDrawRenderer"="opengl" "OffscreenRenderingMode"="fbo" "PixelShaderMode"="enabled" "VertexShaderMode"="hardware" "VideoMemorySize"="1024"
Thanks again for any suggestions.

Client crash each time I dock out station with ½load station environment+ enable.
Other issue still here : * Random global X11 freeze but mouse when loading character. Have to kill EveExe.exe using a remote connection. * Sometime sound cut. Have to go in sound setting and do echo test. This work well just after a session change * At login screen invisible UI. Have to press ESC, go to display setting, change texture setting and apply.
Intel Q6600/AMD ATI Radeon HD 4850. Ubuntu 10.04.2 64 bits/wine 1.3.21/Catalyst 10.5.

Sorry, Jetto, I don't know what to tell you other than to try the latest driver, which right now in the stable tree is 11.6. You can roll back to 10.5 pretty easily in synaptics, if I remember correctly, so you might as well try it.

Progress, sort of... the CQ now loads, but the framerate is now 2fps.
Edit: Actually, I think the latest patch may have more to do with it, since if I remove UseGLSL the CQ still works and the framerate is single digits (1-8fps observed) regardless of quality settings, resolution, etc.
For reference, prior to Incarna I would get 40-130fps depending on the environment with the quality settings mostly on high and running fullscreen at 2560x1600.

Flickering white noise was helped here by turning off shadows which also gave a huuge speed increase.

tried everything from my config posted above to fglrx 11.6, wine 1.3.23 on x86_64 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+
fps are never above 10% of pre-Incarna, especially in CQ, core clock and temperature way low. settings found by Wadlax made a difference here, but only before Incarna 1.0 client update 3. since then fps is at a constant low.

If you don't have the UseGLSL entry in the register, it will be on, it's the default according to the Wine source code.

I've finally come around to a useable setup.
After completely wiping the previous install including the wine prefix and installing fresh the issue still remained regardless of configuration. I then ditched fglrx in favor of xf86 ati drivers, which initially Eve failed to load with (usual complaint about SM3 support missing). Once I ensured I had libtxc_dxtn (and the lib32 version since I'm on x64) Eve loaded up fine and I now get 30-60fps (seems vsync is on regardless of my settings) at 2560x1600 with medium overall quality settings in Eve.
This is with CQ disabled, as this setup has some graphic glitches and abysmal framerates in CQ, and after checking it out I find it annoying anyway (especially the extra load time, and wasting time moving around in order to do something). At the moment I find things much more usable with station environment turned off.
For what it's worth, this is my overall setup: Intel Core i7 930 (2.8GHz) 24GB Ram ATI 5850 1GB -- dual monitors: 2560x1600 and 1200x1600 (rotated for same vertical res) Arch Linux 64 -- custom kernel with some drm/video related optimizations Openbox WM, no DE, no composite engine running xf86 ati drivers (GIT version, pull dated 2011-07-02) Mesa/Gallium Wine 1.3.23
Eve client settings: Fullscreen (2560x1600) Interval immediate (drivers seem to insist on vsync though) All effects on Use LOD: on Sun Occlusion: on Low quality characters: off Physically simulated cloth/hair: off Texture quality: medium Resource cache: on HDR: off Depth effects: on Load station environment: off AA: disabled (no choice here... don't see a way to force the drivers either) Post Processing: none (no visual difference, not using CQ so seems moot and has a huge framerate impact) Shader Quality: low Texture Quality: medium LOD Quality: medium Shadow Quality: disabled Interior Effects: medium (moot)
As a (off-topic) personal bonus, after switching to the OSS drivers I have much better full-screen video (and general 2d accelerated) performance, can use SketchUp in Wine (works better now than using it in VirtualBox/Win 7 client), the KMS support provides a much nicer console and correct resolution before loading X, etc. The fglrx drivers my provide better raw performance, but at this time the stability and support of the OSS drivers is giving a much better overall experience and the performance doesn't seem all that far behind.
Sorry for the lengthy post, but perhaps some of this info is useful to someone.

Yeah!
AMD Open drivers seam to be the solution. I have less problem with them since Incursion (I use to have a crash on character load with FGLRX that I did not have with Gallium3D drivers.)
I really like the Video playback quality I get in bonus using theses drivers.
