Edited by: Ayumikata on 22/06/2011 03:41:18 Well we have all see the very high costs of NEX items. We all know the 12,000 Aurum *accessory*.
I can guess CCP wants to drain out idle PLEXes/ISK from the players, since ISK directly relates to money for them; less ISK, more months paid with real money, more money for them. Thats all good.
But are they planning on leaving the prices that high? I can't see them coming around in 2 months saying "Ok, reducing prices by ten fold of NEX items [or increasing PLEX to Aurum ratio]!". I can't imagine CCP has really figured out that the average idle ISK each player has in EVE is that high to "impose" a blanket "drain yo isk" measure. We all know someone who runs on a handful of millions, and we all know who runs on hundreds of billions, but NEX is available to all. It's not like they raised the availability of technetium or changed the resource change to T2 items. Rich people are still gunna be rich, and poor people are still gunna be poor. They both buy the same NEX item, one is still poor, the other one is still rich.
And especially since the Aurums are directly linked to the PLEX, and that's linked to real money, there will never be any depreciation. Aurum will still be worth as much as a PLEX, and that will still be worth 15$ or so. The price of the PLEX in ISK will always change, but it's always going to be 15$ in the end. So what we might see is the whole NEX-ISK market following the price of the PLEX, but we won't see anything like price drop due to abundance. No one is going to want to sell their 1200 million ISK monocle for any lower, because the price is set by the cost of a PLEX, and that will never change. And there will always be a demand for these. Even if you say they are vanity items, it's still content. Especially once they will open up the station walking. It's going to be a big Habbo Hotel and we are all going to try to look cooler than the next guy. It's like saying you don't need to buy that Heavy Assault ship, you can just go PVP in a T1 Frigate. Sure your going to get a kill someday, but you will be on the receiving end more often than not.
I don't know what CCP is trying to do here. It's gone all wrong somewhere along the way. CCP is rolling with the veterans. A carrier used to mean something, so did a dread. Now it's just MOM/Titan food. And there used to be 1 titan per region. But now there are tons. But the ISK needed to build one and the Skill Points needed to fly one are still the same. Some guy who joined last year is going to have to train to a BS, then a Carrier, than a MOM. He isn't going to get a shortcut to the MOM, hes gunna be in a useless Carrier. Adding content is good, but only when it doesn't go over the top, like a MOM (renders Carriers useless) or the NEX market (super expensive). They are increasing the "level", but without keeping a reasonable balance. There will be no competition between new players and old players. And this means in terms of ISKs. A 1 year old player can't afford 400m for a vanity item.
So, maybe I don't know what I'm talking about, maybe MOMs aren't OP. But I'm sure this makes sense one way or the other.

PLEX are paid for with real money already.
I think what CCP is doing here has something to do with mitigating a massive PLEX buy-up so people can cash in quickly on sales of NEX items on in-game markets. Making the prices exorbitant right now gives them time to see how the market will play out, and they can make gradual changes later to the prices of items. In other words, they're trying to keep people from rushing the markets, because honestly, who (other than an insanely rich player) is going to want to drop 4 PLEX, or whatever it is, just to afford a monocle?
Aurum could become an interesting tool in controlling PLEX prices. By making NEX items more expensive, they reduce demand for PLEX-->AUR conversions, which could create a downward trend in PLEX prices, at least to something more reasonable than 400mil. Once a nice balance is achieved, they can gradually reduce Aurum cost of items in order to find something like a state of equilibrium.
I think that, eventually, 1 PLEX will probably be enough to get you somewhere between 1-3 vanity items, depending on the items in question of course. They've already made it clear that they're testing the new market and easing it into existence in order to mitigate any issues that might throw the entire economy out of whack.

Interesting fresh insights on Aurum and Aurum item pricing, thanks for the new and exciting perspective!
Unfortunately I don't have a lot to add.
Think CCP went off the deep end with this? Is it just hilariously terrible?

Also, I think a lot of people are massively overestimating the importance of vanity items right now, since at this stage of Incarna, you're really the only person who can see them anyway.

That is so ten days ago.

How high is too high is a debatable question, but my guess is they will err on the side of caution and we will see almost no detectable aurum bump in the PLEX price at least detectable in the middle of the usual expansion crash.
I believe you are completely wrong as far as Aurum not affecting Plex.

I think you should look up once in a while because some things just seem to go completely over your head.
On a serious note, we saw the bump and it lasted all the way since announcement till the time CCP made efforts to lower the price, first via terror, and then via ******ed Aurum item pricing that took the wind off confidence that the items would prove popular and there would be a market for them. At which time, the price is collapsing as can be seen in Jita.
Far cry from no effect, I would think! Think CCP went off the deep end with this? Is it just hilariously terrible?

No, a couple boots, a couple blouses (or rather, a single blouse in two colors) male pants, female pants, and a 60 dollar monocle.
Thats about it.

1. No.
2. Nothing with color whatsoever.
3. Black or grey, your choice.
4. Imagine WWII Wehrmacht officers uniforms.
5. Hogan's Heroes. That sort of thing.
6. 1 male tunic (boring), 1 male trousers (grey), 1 male jackboots (black).
7. 1 female shirt (white and boring), 1 female trousers (ugh), 1 female jackboots (black).
8. and a 1b-2b monocle.
9. The boots cost a plex per pair.

Look on the bright side. With the right clothing selection and Walking in Stations we then have the ability to do any kind of machinima style stuff. Like an in-eve version of those hilarious youtube videos with all those actors dressed in WWII uniforms. And yeah it's roundabout but I don't want to trigger anything.

The more we get let CCP know that the prices are ridiculous the better. I know I don't have to buy any of it but seriously they are just being way to greedy! I would never spend that much is or RL money on an ingame item vanity item.

I want my space hamster pet, hope they put that in the next NEX store update.
...and did someone forget to wrap the presents? don't we usually get a (albiet nearly worthless) redeemable gift with each expansion... they could have given us a free pony or something?

Do you think they don't understand this? They've been pretty clear that they're trying to ease in the NEX market in a controlled manner. What better way to do this than to make things insanely expensive, AT FIRST, such that people don't soak up tons of PLEX trying to get all that the market has to offer, thereby making the PLEX prices go sky-high, and screwing the entire in-game economy?
Setting high prices on stuff you don't even need to play the game, and aren't required to buy in the first place, is not to be "greedy."
I think a lot of people are just butthurt that they can't buy each piece on the NEX market for 100 Aurum like they assumed they'd be able to. Incarna, as a whole, seems to be a creeping expansion. They're introducing a lot of completely new stuff here, and they want to make sure that it integrates smoothly into the experience. You can argue about whether they have or will achieve such a smooth transition, but ****ing on CCP because they're not essentially giving you all the NEX items is kind of obnoxious.
