Obviously I must have missed this somewhere, but I can no longer play EVE as of Incarna 1.0, with the error 'outdated videocard' and it's lack of shader model 3.0 support. I only have a several year old laptop to play on while at college, (played everything up to Incarna fine, including large fleet fights) so I can only conclude that the new fangled CQ is to blame for the requirement.
My question is, is there anyway to trick the client into thinking I have shader model 3.0, and then choosing the 'don't load station environment' so I don't encounter any issues, or is it something more complex than that, and thus, unfixable.
Oh, and grats CCP, your broom cupboard that added literally no functionality to the game just took a dump on my internet spaceships. **** you.

yeah looks like the only real purpose of this patch was to force people to upgrade, to high end gear that they will make obsolete in a year, and to get rid of those who cannot afford to upgrade. What a nice thing to do...

Same deal here. I could deal with not being able to tattoo my character's face (even though I could mysteriously see everyone else's tattoo...)
However, I now have two subbed accounts and a couple bil isk-worth of plex bought directly from CCP that I can no longer access. To say I'm ****ed is an understatement.
I don't want Captain's Quarters; I don't need Captain's Quarters; if I wanted to play a Play Station game I'd go buy one.
What I paid for was to fly around in space -- and the hilariously infuriating part is that apparently if you can get in-game you can turn the awful "feature" off.
What's even cooler is that my corp is now left without a CEO and a COO.
Either fix this or give me my money back.

The silly thing is (for those of us who can get on and have noticed) shader model 3.0 doesn't look any different from shader model 2.0. I spent an extensive amount of time in the character customiser before Incarna and it still looks the same, in fact, it actually runs slower and crashes often. Why bother putting shader model 3.0 in at all? Seems kinda odd. It's nice to have a beautifull game with some of the best looking graphics rendering there is, but when it's causing more harm than good, there should at least be a way to turn the advanced graphics off.

CCP notified over a year ago they were going to drop support for Shader Model 2.0. At the same time they were going to drop Shader Model 1.0 in the next patch. They also mentioned it I think twice more since then. ------------------------------------- The system issues man. |

They have made statements already. You have to acquire a Shader Model 3.0 capable video card. This is the only supported solution.
There is also a program called 3D-Analyze that is used to emulate games on older/newer hardware that is incapable of running it. This is unsupported but some players had it working when Shader Model 1.0 was dropped. ------------------------------------- The system issues man. |

I'm running on a Geforce 210, can't say I have any problems, apart from it getting a tad jumpy sometimes if I go mad with the settings, can even switch it between VGA and HD mode, and it only cost ú40, so the choice is:

All graphics cards from Ati x1600+ and Geforce 7300gt+ use Shader Model 3.0, so it's not required to mention it in the minimum specs, because it's default. The minimum specs basically say "if your graphics card is older than either of these two models, it may work, it may not." That's why they're called MINIMUM specs. -------------------------

Yeah I run three eve clients on my 210 worked fine all of last night. I even picked one up for my work computer for the times I jump on to see the corp chatter and check in.
As far as the laptop goes, I'm sorry. My laptop is now fail after incarna, good news is now I have a real reason to upgrade to a new laptop?
For anyone else you can usually put together a cheap gaming computer for eve for a couple hundred bucks check out DIY area of newegg and tigerdirect although I do prefer newegg.

SM 3.0 has been around for 5 years now. It's not like they are dumping some new tech on you that came out only 6 months to a year ago. Any video card you buy, even sub $100, will have this feature. Sorry if some folks are mad because they are trying to update a good game with technology from half a decade ago.
MMOs change and, surprisingly, so do their system requirements.

Best way probably would be to see if you can find out what graphics chipset (the laptop equivalent of a graphics card) it has in it then google the chipset to try and find the specs for it. -------------------------

As Kagumi said above me, google the GPU.
If the laptop is 'badly informed' as in 'HD Graphics!' without mentioning the chip it most likely isn't and will never be worth your money.
edit: I see this a lot with big stores as Carrefour in Europe, which is similar to Walmart in the US. I also see this quite often by small local 'scamming' PC stores.

Shader 3.0 or not and be advised i do have a shader 4.0 able card it doesn't matter if the new features overload the GPU and Ram of the Card that epic that you can't have the CQ running and preview one of the great funny items. without sticking your ram into an infinte loop. Great Coding on CCP's Part.

If you bought a new machine, and it doesn't have Shader 3, you got screwed. I hope its a used but "New to me" machine, otherwise, sorry 'bout your luck.
Little late now, but, some advice...
If you're going to be playing a graphical game, such as EVE, WoW, Need For Speed, whatever... Don't penny pinch on the video card. That device will make or break a machine when it comes to gaming, period. Skimp on the CPU and memory, sink money into the motherboard and video.

"Please note that although we are discontinuing support of Shader Model 2 we will not actively block those cards from running the client. It is therefore possible that players with that hardware will be able to run EVE for some time afterward."
1st not everyone reads the devblogs every single day -- and 2nd I don't recall getting an email telling me they were going to now actively block my card from running the client.
I did, however, get a pop-up warning in-game telling me that I couldn't tattoo my character due to my shader model 2. At that point and shrugged and said heck, I didn't want a tattoo anyway.
Would it have killed them to also state in the pop-up "...and anyone running Shader Model 2 will not be able to run the game PERIOD once the Incarna Expansion is live" ?
At that point I would have planned my subscriptions and plex purchases accordingly -- as my laptop (which is only 2 years old) can't be upgraded.
I can understand the dev's wish to put in content that older players totally hate in order to pander to the 13 year olds who can't quite make the transition from WoW to EvE.

From another perspective. I am glad that CCP is taking the time to update Eve so that it has the detail and features that has come to be expected in a basic modern title.
I also don't believe it's unreasonable for them to expect that a vast majority of users upgrade their machines every 3-4 years (if not more often) just to meet their daily computing needs. Plus the CQ hardware requirements are fairly modest and really don't require a cutting edge system to perform smoothly.

Strange thing, but the graphics cards, released relevantly recently, may not have SM3 support, but is capable of running multiple accounts before INCARNA.
My ati x1200 integrated was running 2 acc's the whole time without problems (14fps average).
I would like to see at least an option to put the accounts on hold, until i will upgrade the laptop (like a year later)

Hi Ladrial,
It would be nice if you could do this, but no pay to play MMO I know of allows you to, the only option is to cancel. So this is something "normal" and "accepted" in the MMO world, unfortunately.
I would contact CCP billing and seeing if there was anything they could do for you, as soon as possible.

Somewhere in the forums I did read that it is possible to put your account on hold until you've upgraded your equipment. IIRC (And this is funny) you need to make a petition.. which... IIRC again... is done in-game? MIGHT be able to do it through EVE-Gate though.

I'm in the same, rather annoyed, boat. I knew this was coming, and was hoping to have a new machine by the time this hit. However, I have not had the money to buy a new PC(which I would need, since my motherboard won't support newer cards), and am very disappointed. Since I don't foresee myself buying a new PC to play one game, I'm going to join the ranks of users canceling their subscriptions over this. A refund for the paid for time that I'm not going to use would be nice, but, being a realist, I know the draconian billing policies of MMOs would never allow giving money back to the customer.

One of the computers we are using is also a dell with an integrated graphic card. I went out today and bought an Eve compatible card. It installed the drivers and all fine. Just take into consideration the low fit of the dell case. That was something we had to work around. Anyway, Eve is now up and running smoothly on this pc. So, no, you just need a new graphic card.
