tldr: feature request: make turrets bigger so that we can actually see them.
First of all I'd like to say I do like the new turrets. The models look neat, the animations look cool, but in practical terms, they're too damn small!
Take a look at this: http://www.fusedfilm.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/ship_battleship_iowa_front_firing_lg.jpg
What jumps out at you? BIG FRAKKIN TURRETS! And the firing effects are pretty cool too. That's what real battleships look like. Now compare with what I saw in my hangar, when I was all giddy to check out the new turret models. With the Apocalypse and Abaddon both, you damn near needed a magnifying glass!
You guys obviously put a lot of work into the new models and animations to make them look good, but all that work is wasted if nobody can see the things! You may as well have kept the old turrets (which were also small and hard to find, btw, but also much less pretty). I only ever see the turrets when I'm looking. Perhaps they'd be much more appreciated if they could be seen without zooming into the ship so close you see nothing else around it. I know it's probably not as simple as it sounds, but the extra effort would be well worth it.
Keep up the good work!

Notice the zoom. Look at Will Smith holding that from 10 feet away it may as well be a stick.

You know the turrets in eve actually are really big, it's just that the ships they're fitted to are even bigger. Also, I don't know if you noticed, but the ship in your link is actually a naval battleship, not a space battleship. You might as well have posted a tank or a helicopter for all seaships and spaceships have in common.

Of course I noticed. It was a real-life example of what I was suggesting. Naval and space battleships have two important things in common: they float around and shoot things. From the naval battleship's picture, its function is obvious. Looking at an abaddon, there's nothing that screams "I'm a battleship!" For all you could tell, it's a transport ship with small batteries to ward off the flies.
In light of the cool turret updates, and given that CCP is proud of the graphics in eve, my suggestion was to make them a more prominent feature of the ship. Are you saying that's a bad idea?

Edited by: Rushnik on 22/06/2011 19:18:44 I fully agree here.
Turrets are too small. But pre patch it was the same situation, so it didnt improve the look overall, they just got shinier with neat little animations that look great but cant really be seen.
I also think the comparision between todays war machines is legit, because the turrets on that ship are designed against ships of the same size. you could also go and explain that eves turrets are soooo high tech that they dont need to be big but thats just meh, as you would expect the defense to be advanced to a point you will need bigger guns as the size of now.
The problem is that in the first steps of the ship design they made errors witht he positioning of the turrets (looking at his cane), its just stupid how they are placed just like some other stupid things that wouldnt work ever in real life. Like designing the ship so that a hit in some random structure would dismember critical modules form the rest of the ship. Best ships are bricks... we dont have air resistence in space. Oh well I know that I shouldnt write this... its meaningless, it only makes me sad that we wont see big turrets ever without redesigning every ship...
/ Rush dont artys need LOOOONG barrels? And where do I get those square ammunitions?

I war ship should be little more than a cannon that can move. My ships only purpose in life is bring it's guns to where they need to be.
The dreads seam about right.
Not going to happen though but larger turrets would be cool. ______ Hello WoW players. Look at your toon, now back to me. Sadly it isn't me, but if it wasn't simplistic pre scripted linear mono dimensional game you could look like me. I'm in a Paladin |

I really have to agree with the OP. Small turrets look nearly comical on monstrous battleships. Nothing says "F*CK YEAH" like blowing someone to little bits with guns the size of frigates - or hell, cruisers even.
Total Grief "You mad Bro?" (....local....) "Oh yes, I think he's mad." |

Was comparing the same guns on a rifter as a thrasher. The look great and perfect size on a rifter, but rather tiny on a thrasher.
Medium guns look big on a vexor, but not on a brutix.
XL guns look massive ona dreadnought, but not on a titan.
It is a balance of small and large. Both extremes will be hard to keep happy.

Comparing spaceships to naval ships is a bad comparsion as far as turrets are considered. You do know a titan is 14km long (which is just massive), and what do u expect? A gun that is half in kilometer in diameter? Do you know the force such a thing would exert?
Second: space is less dense than air. Much less dense/no air friction. Virtually non-existant gravity. So the force you need to put behind a round to propel it is much less. So why have larger barrels when its simply just not neccessary?
