Abstract from the Editorial of FEARLESS
By Peri Desai
Quote: [...] And it couldnÆt come at a better time. As EVE edges closer to being the grand dame of gaming, turning 8 years old this month, and our other game titles continue their prodigious growth (yes, World of Darkness too û you got the t-shirt to prove it), our development road map is shaping up stronger and better. However, as a subscription based golden goose, EVE needs to incorporate the virtual goods sales model to allow for further revenue û revenue to fund our other titles, revenue for its developer: you. The model also supports the notion of creating a meaningful experience and identity for the player (more in our main feature on page 4). [...]
Bye Bye EVE. The worst case scenario happened - YOU LOST THE PLAYERBASE CONFIDENCE

Damn I wish I would have seen that before I started on my own view of why aurum came to be. Oh well, I at least expanded in how they make more money

You do realize that a PLEX is up front payment. It is not unearned income. Up front payment is far preferable in the software world as you can put the money into further development. CCP has already set up their server infrastructure to serve X number of connections, it make little difference to their monthly expenses if the the server has 50,324 connections or 50,325 connections.
If the primary goal of the Aurum prices was to earn as much money as possible, then they would have made them much cheaper. Lots of people buying cheap things makes more money than a few people buying expensive things. By making them as expensive as they have they will still get some extra income from people willing to spend the extra cash. But they don't completely screw the market by inflating PLEX prices, which would in turn deflate ISK value.

It's still unearned income. What did they do to make it "earned"? If 1,000 people use 12,000 plex to get game time ccp will get no subscription money for a year on 1,000 accounts because these plex were already purchased and CCP owes 30 days of game time for each plex. Its tricky because they have the cash but incurred a liability. Server infastructure has no place on the balance statement.
Aurum was introduced at a high price to mitagate the effect on plex by reducing the number if purchases and "hoping" the NEX would bring in more plexs to replace those spent
