I have been a loyal customer since 2004. I've done my best to get all kinds of people to try and play this game. But, I must echo the same sense of betrayal that many of my fellow "bitter vets" are expressing here. And for the first time I actually feel that "bitter" part in front of the "vet."
We play a game about spaceships. We want a game about spaceships. We want stories to go with our spaceships. We want to write most of those stories ourselves, but sometimes having a little help from some in-game events helps. All of these toys you are giving us with walking in stations and what not are nice, don't get me wrong... but I can't help but think you are missing the point. I do not presume to speak for the silent majorities of EVE or anything like that... but I can't help but feel I am not alone when I read through these forums and see it filled with anger. You're missing the mark CCP... give us our toys such as walking in stations to make the game more in-depth if you must... I shalt not complain. I understand that in the grand scheme of things this might actually make EVE better and bring more people in to enjoy our online world and be all the culturally richer for it.
CCP has grown from a small company where the player base knew every Dev and what their job was in EVE... when we could go out in 0.0 and have Oveur spawn hundreds of NPCs our heads just for laughs. To a company that is much larger. Good for CCP, and good for EVE... but we have lost that connection with the Dev's and player-base that was once there, that feeling that you really did play the same game we do.
Greed isn't good, be happy with what you have, be happy with your loyal fans, focus your effort on EVE... you know that game you once dreamed so big about? I know you still do... but I think you dream about for the wrong reasons now. You, as a corporate culture, no longer dream about EVE as the perfect game you will play yourselves, but dream of ways to make it bigger to make more money. Maybe you think these go hand in an hand, or are one in the same, but they are not. The perfect game for making money? World of Warcraft. The perfect game... well the brutal world of EVE Online. You won't always have time for EVE, and EVE might not be very forgiving to the unprepared, and that might not make it popular, but it does bring it a little closer to perfection.
I've had to take breaks from EVE before for reasons beyond the game... but for the first time ever (insert internet meme 'no-troll') I might walk away for good. CCP you've lost face, and this time I don't think you're going to get it back with out some serious corporate soul searching. Tell us CCP, what are you as a company now... why do you keep making EVE? Do you make it because you still love the game and the joy it brings yourselves to see how much others enjoy your work... or is it something that is truly become about greed... at least at the higher levels of your corporation. Not even T20 bothered me that much... it was the actions of one person and some oversight failure on your part. Sure you tried to cover it up at first, you thought this the best way to deal with the problem and not cause damage to the game, even as angry as it made me, I won't begrudge you. I know CCP wasn't actually trying to harm anything, T20 was, but not CCP. This is just complete slap in the face however.
Your Corporate culture needs a change. At least the big developers of games don't try to hide what they are anymore. Massive money making mongrels. Maybe that is what CCP wants to be now, but stop lying to yourselves and to us about it. Make up your mind, are you out to make the perfect game, or the perfect cash machine? Because trying to do both will just result in failure, or so this humble player believes. I would hope you choose the perfect game and just be happy with our little market niche of spaceship pixels and politics. Make me believe again that this is "our" game, not CCP's game.
