Tomorrow CCP announces they won't be bringing any non vanity items to eve. Well they had planned to of course, but with the storm currently brewing they see the folly in their way. To be honest I think the memo was just that. A way to spark conversation in house. I don't fault them for that. Hell what a lot of you think would be gamebreaking I am fine with. Neural remaps? Sure, what do I care if someone wants to pay money to grab a point or two in perception. Monocles at $60? I could care less, I don't have to buy it. More power to them if they fix their pricing so people do buy them. CQ is kind of clunky and pretty bare, I am sure it will grow and the code will get smoother. My machine runs it fine so meh.
In the mean time they have put their "Brand" in the hurt locker. The PR nightmare that is coming really sucks cause most of the eve community has this sense of entitlement that is mindblowing. I personally am fine with Incarna, MT's for Vanity/non combat stuff etc. If they add stuff in game that "helps" PVP for money? Eh, guess I'll be at a disadvantage. Oh well. I'm at one now as SP pretty much trumps isk/skill till you get to a certain point anyhow. I could get all emo and butthurt but what happens will happen. You can all quit before you even know whats coming like a 15 year old, or see what's actually going to happen then make a decision like an adult would.
I do find it funny how mad some of the biggest trolls/griefers/"meta" in this game are though. Hardcore PVP/Gank tears clearly are the tastiest, just ask Soundwave. Keep crying like the "carebears" you all target. Things change, even the rules you like.
So show me on the dolly where the bad CCP touched you, and can I has your stuff?
The problem is that it never should have been a discussion to begin with.

God, it's just that it could've been handled so much god damned better, you know?
You know what you could have done if you'd really wanted to switch business models? Extend the free trial to be indefinite, cut the train speed for trial accounts in half, and split PLEX to be paid for in 24 hour segments.
Instead, we got this. Ugh.

Nothing to do with that purported internal memo, and the lack of response there in, that basically is a plan to milk everyone for everything they are worth and kill the game by introducing special aurum only super mods/weapons/ammo which CCP said would never happen. You lied. And Oh look, you didn't even MENTION it in this post 'addressing' things.

Also, publish the CSM minutes. Hire an intern (me?) to go through them, take out the sekretz, and then let us know what is going. These are taking far too long to get out to the public.

*sigh*
Here are my top Incarna grievances for a clueless OP:
1: Threat of "pay to win" gameplay in the leaked company newsletter, contrary to earlier promises. We're already halfway there with PLEX trading; I do not like where this is going.
2: Regression of UI usability and client efficiency in Captain's Quarters. (New agent finder was a notable exception.)
Regarding point 1, if anyone's dumb enough to pay ú40 for a gold-plated hole in their avatar's head I say let them pay. That's going to be too small a PLEX sink to inflate the market.
Premium items with gameplay effects, on the other hand, are going to be much more disruptive. Items of power and of convenience? Eve is a competitive game; anything that conveys an edge can quickly become mandatory.
You wouldn't want PLEX to inflate, right? That would negate the only (arguably) good effect of PLEX - enabling access for players who can't pay the subs in real currency. Everything else PLEX does is bad for Eve's gameplay. Yes, I know PLEX inflation would be good for your profits, but frankly all these years of expenditure on the Incarna tech and the underwhelming results make me suspect you'd have produced a better game with less money.
Speaking more generally, we too often witness promise-breaking and disingenuous excuses from CCP staff today. Not just on big stuff like Aurum either - even on small stuff we get fed BS. Enough of this already.

I believe the views he expresses in the newsletter to be completely wrong, but I think if we give him and the other CCP guys a chance to see the player's perspective without personal attacks that drive them away from the discussion, they will come around to our side. Worst comes to worst we can just all unsub and the company will go bankrupt, but hopefully we can reach a compromise before that stage.
If Soundwave and the rest of CCP had talked to players like the CSM (or, you know, the guys under NDA who were hanging out with them all last week) about this they would have understood our concerns earlier. At this point we need more contact between devs and players, not less.
Well said.
This. Many times this.
I'm plenty frustrated with the situation, but I don't think CCP is going to be able to actually give us the answers we want to hear if we keep jumping down their throats.
If you're unhappy with the situation, you have several options available to you. You can throw your toys out of the pram, threaten the devs, scream profanity, type in huge font and all caps in funny colors, but none of that is actually going to help the situation. On the other hand, you can stop, pull yourself away for a moment, cool the **** down, and then try and be constructive.
Yes, it's understandable that you're ****ed off and want to vent. But it isn't particularly productive at the moment and isn't going to get anything done faster. If you're going to leave, STFU and do so and let those who are going to try to stick it out in the hopes that things can be mended try to be useful.
I'm pretty annoyed that Crysis runs better on my machine than the CQ does. I'm also a little underwhelmed by the current state of the CQ as a whole, given the things that were told to us about what it would be. I'm definitely annoyed that instead of having the option to decant/disembark from the hangar we've all come to know and love to the CQ, we're given the choice of a hit-or-miss performance from CQ, or an ironically poorly-chosen static image of the door.
I'm definitely annoyed that I could buy a whole outfit or two IRL for the same cost as that monocle. I'm extremely irritated that CCP is backpedaling on previous promises on the subject of the extent of microtransactions in EVE, and that the idea that someone could buy something that would have an effect on actual gameplay while bypassing the ingame economy altogether is even being considered.
But on the other hand, I'm very much liking the new turrets. The new Maller model is outstanding. The Agent Finder tool is a piece of solid ****ing gold and I can't see how the hell I lived without it before even though I've only spent about ten or fifteen minutes fiddling with it.
I was looking forward to the concept that is Incarna. I'm heavily disappointed in the resulting implementation as it stands - mostly because I feel that there was a lot of feedback on the forums from the testing clients on Sisi and Duality that appears to have been ignored in favor of meeting a deadline that was overhyped and caused unrealistic expectations from the playerbase rather than keeping the feature in testing until it was actually ready. But I'm not leaving. I'm sticking around, because frankly I like this game too damn much to just throw my hands up in the air and quit.

Thanks for confirming. Ill come back when soundwave resigns and aurum is removed. Previous posts contain screenshots of my cancelled accounts.
Our newsletters are written as a means to bring about discussion (that sometimes can even become heated debate) among our coworkers. That's really all I can say about it. I am not a game designer. Originally by: CCP Pann The newsletter was not fake. I guess this is how it feels when someone reads your diary, something you hadn't intended anyone else to see.
FWIW I have worked in IT support, ISP T2/T3, real estate, big govt contracting, and all organisations big enough for an HR department have this kind of thing. It's a combination sounding-board, rage/venting mechanism, black humour repository and means for colleagues to triangulate their world views in much the same way you'd use two mountain tops at 90¦ to get a better reading on where you are on this little map.
I've said it before, especially on #tweetfleet, the stuff in that newsletter should be treated as trolling. The same as any post you see on FHC, 4chan, or somethingawful. There is some truth in everything, but sometimes you need to blow things up to extremes in order to figure out what it is that niggles you about a particular idea.
The appropriate way to take part in this discussion is not "OMGWTFBBQ CCP R RAPIN UR WALLIT" spam all over forums and twitter and FHC and Massively and anyone who will give you the time of day.
The appropriate way to take part in this discussion is to talk about what the limits for virtual item sales are. Is it acceptable to sell ships (HELL NO). Is it acceptable to sell monocles (OK). Is it acceptable to trade one ship for the same thing in a different colour? What about a small-run BPC for that same different-colour ship?
What about a trade-in or BPC for a ship that has the same stats and prereqs as a Dominix, but a different model? You know, so it doesn't look like a huge space potato? Would people pay ISK/Aurum/Dollars for that?
Spewing rage all over the forums is really poor form. Hopefully CCP can see the positive in this and realise that they really need to lift their game on communicating plans to the playerbase. Perhaps "Fearless" needs to become a player-facing publication alongside devblogs? At least this way CSM won't be bound by NDA, players get to have input long before any decisions are made, and CCP can become more transparent and fearless, as well as building an even tighter bond with their fanbase. We're not just players, after all. CCP are rockstar artists, and EVE Online is their greatest work ever, and we are their fanatical groupies.
How many of us fantasise about working at CCP to help build this game that we love? How much would we enjoy reading "Fearless" and pretending that we could be part of that culture, if only they'd give us the chance? (you know, the same way we read Gossip Daily and pretend that we'd be a much better partner for that model than the selfish coke-addled nitwit they're dating)

As I see it, the chief complaint is regarding the high cost of goods in the Noble Market. Second, many people are unhappy about the CaptainÆs Quarters. Third, there are some performance issues with Incarna.
Ignoring the elephant in the room hmm? This is yet another demonstration of how out of touch you guys are with the reality of the situation.
The newsletter is a BIG DEAL. It shows a side of CCP we never knew. Never thought it could possibly exist. EVE is (was?) such a gem among MMOs; something completely unique and different, with SO MUCH potential. And we all admired CCP as a company. You guys were always so cool and together with community we saw EVE grow and evolve. We thought you cared about the game! But you just care about money...
Even though the newsletter doesn't represent the final internal policy it's scary that these sort of things are even being discussed at CCP. It shows that you are going in the wrong direction. Direction that has only profit in mind and EVE is no longer your priority. It's just a tool for you to make more money.
And regarding Incarna. A PATHETIC EXCUSE FOR AN EXPANSION THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE IDEA OF INCARNA.
What did we get? - MT store that nobody wants (this may come as a shock to you but we DON'T want MT in EVE) - A 5-minute preview demonstration of your new graphical engine (which nobody will use for more than a few minutes)
And that's it.
The idea of Incarna is a brilliant one but you went about it the wrong way. Captain Quarters (in it's current form) is nothing more than a short technology demonstration that shows the capabilities of your graphical engine. That's it. It's crystal clear that you used this demonstration to attract attention of companies like nVidia and you are using EVE Online as a sandbox to develop this engine that will one day migrate over to future titles like WoD.
What is the point of CQ? It has nothing to do with the idea of Incarna. It's simply a trophy room where you can display your MT purchases. Because CQ are a technology demonstration (and were not developed solely for EVE) you as developers can't even use them for anything else. With the current level of computer technology the elusive "walking in stations" is several years away. Not because you can't design the environments but because the current hardware is simply not capable to handle hundreds of characters and large environments. What? You are thinking long-term? Nope, that is just a typical CCP excuse for everything.
So all you can do is design 3 more CQ for each race. Just pathetic. You see them once, you walk around for 5 mins to explore them and you turn them off because they are pointless and they use way too much hardware power.
ADDING 3 MORE CQ TO EVE AND ADDING NEW ITEMS TO THE STUPID MT STORE IS NOT DEVELOPMENT.
Originally by: CCP Manifest Aurum is here to stay. The cycle here isn't changing soon.
WE DON'T WANT &%/"!$$"! AURUM BECAUSE WE ALL KNOW WHERE THAT BOAT IS HEADED. YOU SAY JUST VANITY ITEMS? JUST LIKE YOU SAID THERE WON'T BE ANY MT IN EVE???
Originally by: CCP Manifest BUT, making and designing and creating a game isn't pick and choose, especially when it comes to introducing something like Incarna or devoting significant dev time to rewriting old code backbone so we can grow again in the future. We know the other stuff is wanted. We know Incarna is also wanted and are working towards what many of you have wanted out of it. It just takes time.
DEVOTE MANPOWER TO DEVELOP EVE AND NOT TO DEVELOP WAYS TO MAKE MORE MONEY.

I've been trying to avoid the ragestorm on the forums, but I feel compelled to add my 2 isk to this.
I'm not some huge player in EVE politics, I don't bring down Alliances with carefully laid out metagaming. While I've at least dabbled in most areas in EVE, I have a certain set of things I enjoy the most.
I've said for a long time, that the day WiS was finally released, EVE would be the perfect game (for me). It would allow me to connect to a world, that I care a great deal about, in a totally new way. I love the spaceships part of this game first and foremost, but I also love the vision of EVE (just EVE) as the complete sci-fi sim.
I'll even go as far to say as I like CQ as a start to this. I think it needs work, technical issues aside, the lighting is really bad and the fact my character barely resembles what I put hours into bothers me a bit.
But that is all a non issue in the face of the newsletter. EVE has always (to me anyways) seemed like a game that rewarded hard work and time invested. The idea of BUYING ships, ammo, standing, etc for money is about the most ****ed up idea I've ever heard. Regardless if the newsletter was just put out to stir internal debate, there shouldn't be a need for internal debate. MT need to stay vanity (clothes, paint jobs, etc) and need to not completely skull **** the economy (like the original Scorpion idea).
The fact that Soundwave's comments are so far off the mark, regardless if he was simply asked to play devil's advocate, is disturbing to say the least.

Microtransactions for anything but vanity items will cause serious damage to your subscription levels in my opinion. And we need to know that CCP in not willing to go with microtranactions on anything but vanity items that do not affect gameplay.

And I don't want to have to load first the station hanger and then the CQ in order to get there. So I say no going back to station spinning, that is, unless you can pick a default location to go to when you dock, ie hanger, or CQ.

I am one of those who cancelled my subscription due to this patch and this whole mess.
Why did I do that?
First, I am very permissive of RMT type activities. I can see the value proposition they present to a company and I will not blame a company for expanding revenue streams by introducing them. If managed properly they can generate good income for the company and they can present players with a new aspect of the game that they will cherish.
I believe strongly that the best of anything in a game should be obtainable by playing the game. If there is something that is 'elite' then it should be only obtainable via elite activity in the game. Things of this nature should not be placed in a RMT store.
That's my personal bias.
Why did the Noble Store initiative generate such a thunderstorm of negative energy? Not because of what it is - it existed on the test server for some time and people were 'okay' with it (more or less) but it was the PRICING of the items. The surprise that quickly turned into dismay from many players was the perception of how out of touch and greedy CCP was in regards to RMT items. When items in an in-game store for an in-game character cost more than they would for a real life person... something is very much out of whack.
This, in turn, leads to the easy line of reasoning that CCP is out of whack. Introduce the internal newsletter about RMT and then no one at CCP managing any kind of PR discussion and well, we have "proof" that CCP is out of whack.
CCP has, apparently, reneged on earlier promises in regards to RMT. This isn't cool.
No one stood up in front of the fans and initiated a discussion or set their expectations. The expectations that people had from CCP about the Noble exchange were simple: vanity items at 'reasonable' prices. Not vanity prices at outrageous prices. Because CCP failed at managing expectations the question is very simple, what else is CCP failing at?
I read everything on the forums, I tested out the Captain Quarters, I looked at the Exchange and I came to a conclusion: CCP has lost it. EVE Online is going the way of Star Wars Galaxy. Why should I continue to support a company that fails at its basic communications with its playerbase?
Any time any company attempts to 'pull the wool' over the eyes of its customers or believes that its customer base is stupid (this is EVE.. I mean.. come on, there are so many ridiculously intelligent people who play this game it is scary) then that company will (and does) lose business.
This patch was a culmination of the bitter vet syndrome, a management team that has lost track of its customers, and an overall player base who are feeling disenchanted.
This feeling will continue to fester and grow. Because of this, EVE will bleed subscriptions. Once the ball really starts going it cannot be stopped. The opportunity, such that it is, that exists now is to come clean with the -real- vision and direction of EVE.
Is EVE really just a cash cow to fund two other games? If so, will the players of EVE (who, by paying for EVE have helped in the development of these games) have any compensation / reward / recognition in the new games?
Will the RMT system continue to grow and expand to a point whereby it will eclipse merely cosmetic properties? Will there by any comparable IN-GAME ONLY (without RMT)options available as well? For example, someone who completes all the epic arcs, will they be presented with an option to get a really amazing tattoo? Or maybe a star-eye monocle?
I want to know where EVE is going and what kind of attention it will get.
Sure, there will continue to be development teams on EVE.. but is the focus there? Are these teams really just testing out new code / ideas / and designs for the upcoming games?
Why is the plan to -force- everyone to use Captain's Quarters or to Walk on Stations each time they dock? I never ever expected to -have- to do this. I always thought it'd be an option.
