I can't find a straight answer on them being safe or not.
I understand that if I hit a player Concord will come after me, but conversations I've read in the past make me think there's more to using them then that. Plus I almost never see them on people's fit lists.
Low missions keep sending me after drones that orbit me really close inside the range of these things. I'd be nice to make a ship with a few of them to just AE the crap out of them. Not sure how practical that is, but I'd like to play around with it if nothing else. I just don't want to suddenly lose my ship because I didn't know something about them.

Using smart bombs in high sec is a BAD idea.
In addition to worrying about hitting other players, you also need to worry about hitting certain structures or scenery. It can work if you don't hit the wrong things, but eventually you will hit the wrong thing and lose your ship because of it. Is it really worth the risk?
There are much more effective and safe tactics to use rather than smart bombs. If you give us more information about the ship setup you are using we can offer more specific advice.

I believe your question is "Can Smart Bombs be used in High Security Space in Missions?"
I've often wondered the same and have never see a clear answer either. I -THINK- you can. It's my understanding and experience that you can fire at and destroy anything -inside a mission- area. Even if it's not part of your mission and even if you have already completed your task, you can blow up all of the stations and structures present if you want to. I do believe it effects your standings with the owner or faction that owns the structures.
Of course you would have to make sure that there were no other real players present. And while I know people can scan you down and find you inside a mission (usually for ninja salvaging) I've only seen another player in my mission once. He was red cause he was looting my wrecks so I popped him.
But yeah, I think you can use smart bombs in a mission regardless of the area's security level.

Ah some of the random scenery stuff will do it?
No I'm doing fine on the missions, I just have this extra high slot issue... it's not for PvP so I don't need neuts/nos, I don't want to spend cap on an auto targetter, but damnit I don't like leaving it empty!

The most compelling reason I see to not use bombs while missioning in hisec is the cost. Bombs aren't cheap and I doubt the profits from a mission would cover the cost of even a single bomb. Depending on the mission level that is.

Yes, you can use smartbombs for highsec mission-running. No, it is not a good idea to do so. The chance of accidentally hitting something that triggers a CONCORD response is small, but not negligible. Not a very bad idea though, but only as long as you are fully aware of the risks involved and you don't mind losing your ship. Running smartbombs while doing missions in a big hub is much riskier than doing the same in a remote area that's sparsely populated.
Just imagine what happens if you get scanned down by a cloaky prober, he enters your mission cloaked, and when he notices you're using a smartbomb simply pulls alongside you. _

You fail. You do not even know what a smartbomb is. If anything you'll spend less (unless you use lasers or drones). --- I don't know! I don't know why I did it, I don't know why I enjoyed it, and I don't know why I'll do it again! Bart Simpson. |

do not use smartbombs in highsec, someone will find you and go up to you cloaked so you can un-intentinally hit you, then concord comes and blows up your ship, and they will loot your ship and maybe try to hold your pod ransom, even if you do pay they might still pod you

You're thinking of a bomb only usable on a stealth bomber, you can't even fire those things in highsec, it's just not possible.

One more reason to not use a smartbomb:
some people like to probe down mission runners. If they see that you are using a smartbomb in a mission they might go back, get a cloaking ship, come back cloaked, and then "wander" right into your smartbomb's range while you are running it... effectively triggering a CONCORD response against you. They then collect what remains of your ship and fly away.
If you are having trouble against small fast targets then I suggest training up your drone skills. In large ships they are indispensable. _______________________

My trouble is more so learning to prioritize targets.
Two frigs, a destroyer, and lots of tiny crap ships come at me at the same time. It seems like I can't win sometimes because shooting the tougher targets lets the weaker ones go to town on me, but shooting the weaker ones lets the stronger ones go back to the jungle on me.
I thought I could shoot the big stuff and smartbomb the little stuff that orbits so close. I guess I just need to stop training guns and raise my tank skills some. I have hardly trained any real skills at all. Most of my SP is in navigation and spaceship command so far, so I could fly the ships I wanted and at high speed.

You can actually issue a command to your drones to kill the frigates independent of what you are shooting at with your guns. Simply send out a flight of small drones (I prefer hobgoblins myself), set to them "auto-aggro," select the locked frigate, right-click your drones, and "engage." Volia! From that point on your drones will auto-attack any NPC frig that "redboxes" you. Once all the "small" NPCs are gone they will automatically move up to the next class. note: sometimes the drones will not do this exactly and you have to lock another small ship and sic the drones on it.

Yeah... once you get into larger ships speed is not something you should totally rely on (as larger ships tend to be MUCH slower). Having "decent" skills in tank and point defense (i.e. drones) goes a long way in helping you do missions (and oh, so much more).
Out of curiousity... what level missions/PvE stuff are you doing and in what ship? _______________________

I used smartbombs in some missions on my Drake in the past. They're effective and the chance that someone is just entering your mission is rather small.
There is a very small risk however as someone scans you down, takes a cloaked ship and flies into your smartbomb radius while they're activated. The chance is very, very small.
I wouldn't use it on 3 billion ISK ships though :)

Lv1's in a passive succubus.
Cross trained a bunch of times when I first started. Amarr to start. Minmatar to try the thrasher and vigil. Caldari because I found I really liked missiles. All that opened up the pirate factions and I had ISK from a PLEX I got off a buddy invite. Got a Cruor, Slicer, and Succubus to try out since I had laser skills by default. Loved the Succubus so much I blew my isk on a Phantasm to grow into.
Minmatar speed + missiles + slick black ships = The Malediction.
LOVE flying my slicer, can't wait to get into Maledictions... except they're completely opposite skills from the Sansha ships and obviously aren't going to do much in solo PvE high level missions.
Probably have to sell my toys and make some other plan to PvE in an armor/missile boat so all my skill training stays relevant. That's a tricky thing though, not exactly sure what ships to go for, to stay in armor/missile skills. Might end up bouncing between Minmatar, Amarr, and Caldari for a long time.

In all seriousness your arguments never made it to the game... you kept trying to drop quotes that didn't say what you said they did, or make statements about Aurum that were false. All I had to do was point it out. Anyone could have done it, I just had the time and was lurking the new player forum anyway, since I am one.
