Well this will be an important lesson to you in the future. Please save this post and reread it in 12 months time and write 100 times "I must remember to read between the lines"
Well, you can save yours then and be ready to in twelve months time write 100 times "I was wrong in taking a Gordon Gekko edition at face value"
I'll either way be having a blast the coming 12 months =)

My initial response was:
lol wut?
Now, after having it settle in for a bit, my current response is... what the heck?
I don't think I've ever seen a failure to properly address an irate group of fans ever. And I've seen debacles from NCSoft (Aion Online), Sony, and Warhammer.
This 'dev blog' is brutal in how it reads and how it fails to address the issues at hand. I wouldn't be surprised if CCP Zulu has failed in retaining subscriptions but also caused more to quit.
This is indicative of the direction that EVE is going. This is a continuation of the broken trust and bad management that plagues bad games. What was once a -great- game and an amazing company has fallen... far and hard.
I cannot, in good conscious, support this company in its current form regardless of my previous staunch support for it.

If everyone who is against this on the forums manned up, unsubscribed and refused to login until CCP gave a full and frank answer and preferably a 180¦ turn around on their decided strategy.
You might, just, have a chance to change their minds.
Ultimately it doesn't hurt you. you get to go out drinking, watch some movies paint the house. Remember your kids names, take the dogs for a walk, play with a frisbee, fly a kite, reas a decent book (or the entire Neil Asher bibliography-honestly he's great)
I guarantee you it would make a difference to CCP. Sure they have planned to lose some accounts over this.
But they didn't expect it to happen now
Their planning for massive sub loss was not expected to be needed some months, even a year from now.
You can always resubscribe if they commit to reinstating the core values that Eve was built on. They may be forced to change their strategy if the golden geese actually flee the next for a period of RL social interaction.
It does you no harm, but it sends a VERY powerful message.

Just one point, about ****ting on the Dev's who "courageously" took up the pro argument for MT for non-vanity items.
They are not courageous. I've played EVE since December 2006, I've watched CCP Soundwave on EVE TV, and hosting the alliance tournaments for years. I've always thought he was a pretty cool guy who got to go from playing a game he loved to designing a game he loved. And who seemed to be for the player base of EVE and for making EVE more of what it is. The game where hardcore sci-fi gamers can go and do serious business with internet spaceships, and control empires or break them. However all that trust is now gone.
He is either a corporate stooge or part of the group of liars at CCP. There are no other options if he was courageous he would have refused to write that article and suffered any consequences for not going along with the group. He would have been more courageous for doing that when he thought it would be an only internal document not less so.
CCP a lot of smart people work for you. Way more smart people play your game, you built a game where you have to be smart to succeed, don't **** that up.

This is not the time to batten down the hatches and spit out non-apologetic bull****. This is the time to actually visibly address player concerns and answer the questions, especially the one in big yellow font.
I have a current sub for two months because I took advantage of the reactivation deal and wanted to see Incarna. I have no intention of continuing beyond those two months (provided I still have Internet capable of playing the game), if the apparent direction of Eve Online is towards a microtransaction-based game, particularly if AUR or PLEX beyond an in-game advantage in any way, shape, or form.
I will accept items with a different look as long as they're functionally the same as any other faction ship or other item of the same type. I will accept expensive vanity items, even the monocle.
I will not accept items in the NEx shop that are functionally better than any item already in Eve Online. I will not accept "unlocks" that are not purely for vanity (more fitting saves or additional skillpoints being two examples of such). I will not accept any item in the NEx shop that will be viewed as mandatory or makes the game easier for those with a flush cash wallet.
Should the unacceptable happen, I will simply unsubscribe, purge the game from my system, and actively discourage others from giving your company, CCP, any business, whether through Eve Online, DUST 514, World of Darkness, or any other product you may create. At that point, you will have shown to me your utter disregard for a significant portion of your community and / or an incredible lack of understanding about what this portion of the community is looking for and values in this game.
I don't want to do this. Eve Online is unique in the MMORPG industry. It's the only space-based game that I know of that's a giant sandbox, that encourages diversity in its player base and community, and that supports as much of that community as it can, from those damned dirty ape pirates to roleplayers to scammers to the big 0.0 alliances. You haven't always succeeded, but you do it enough to keep us hooked.
Just, please, don't make Eve Online into yet another microtransaction game. Don't kill what makes Eve the game it is in some vain search for more money. Far better than any ISK you make IRL from this is the community you fostered. The community is what makes this worth the money. Not the shinies. Not the hype. The people - games and developers both - cooperate and share in making the Eve Online universe into something that enriches the lives of those that take part. Reward that. Not someone's open wallet.

Saw the blog. Sees that it's basicly a big "QQ" and blaming the players for the "****storm"..
CCP doesnt even admit that they are part in fault for this. Not being entirely transparent to their playerbase, infact trying their best to hide their plans..
CCP are hiding other things than simply this newsletter... (S)tuff that is only known to senior management.

Working for CCP I've had hands on experience by working my way through the company to the current position. This includes QA work, both in regular testing and test server maintenance, game design; mostly game balancing and PVP mechanics and production and management.

I just love the way they tell everyone to wait until Friday for an answer. Then give a complete non-answer right as the weekend starts. The act of a guilty politician caught in a scandal, hoping things blow over or calm down before Monday.
The answers everyone is afraid of hearing are probably the ones they will give.

Here's what the wider world thinks about your devblog CCP Zulu.
Edited by: Alley Specter on 25/06/2011 01:32:20 Link
Some of the choicer comments on the article (Many of which aren't from Eve players)
"How to loose your customer base 101 is pretty much the course that guy followed."
"not only that, he seems to have also gotten a master degree in "how to lose your future customers" not touching WoD with a ten foot pole after this"
"I'm amazed. Not even Blizzard are this smug about ****-poor ideas."
"Agreed. Blizzard proved their flexibility, to my satisfaction at least, in their response to the real names on forums fiasco. Yes, it took several days to get one, but in the meantime they were constantly saying "keep posting in the feedback thread, we're listening" and when the response finally DID come, it was from Blizzard's CEO and actually addressed the major complaint as well as a few minor issues surrounding other aspects of Real ID."
"I don't even play EVE regularly but reading the forums the last few days has been morbidly fascinating. Based on what I've seen both before and after the dev blog was posted, very little in the way of actual concerns was addressed, especially regarding the demands for an answer on whether "micro"transactions would indeed eventually encompass non-vanity items. Sadly, my interest in World of Darkness fades more the longer they mismanage this mess. Especially if it turns out to be pay-to-win ON TOP OF a regular monthly fee, although obviously that's not something that will be known for some time."
"What a shame. Not two days ago I was talking to a friend about my hopes for WoD. Then as news began to break, my interest went completely out the window. "
"the bit about pricing comes across as downright confrontational. The prices are unexpected, and higher than I'd every pay, but getting all defensive about it isn't the way to handle that kind of criticism."
Getting compared negatively to even Blizzard? GG CCP
