I was wondering if the skills like "EM shield compensation" had any benefit when an EM shield hardener is active. The description says the skill adds to a passive resist- so is the active resist unchanged, or does the active resist apply on top of the passive resist?
Suppose I have an invulrability field II giving 30% resist bonust, and EM shield compensation trained to lvl 5, giving a 15% passive resist bonus.
For a T1 non-caldari& non faction ship, when the Inv field is inactive, I should have a 15% EM resistance - ie incoming EM damage is subject to a 0.85 modifier.
When I activate the Invul field, do I now have a 0.7 (ie 30% resist) EM damage modified, or a 0.7 *0.85 = 0.595 damage modifier = 40.5% resist?
I currently use active shield hardeners, and the cap usage is not a problem (cap stable with them active), so I don't really see a point in training these skills unless they provide a bonus even when the hardeners are active.

Edited by: Rushnik on 24/06/2011 22:01:38 Tested it in EFT and it looks like the bonus only applys on passive modules.. means your aktiv hardener wont profit from that skill in the slightest when its online, btw you should take a look at passive complex hardeners... on some fits they might be great.
correct me if I'm wrong

They affect active hardeners, but only the passive bonus they give.

No, it is not "added". The 15% (lvl5 compensation) is a factor which in some way applies to the passive resists you add.
I did a short test in EFT just now, with an *empty* ship. EM base resist was 60%.
Adding a +20% EM plate (just one, nothing else) gave a total of 68% resist -> deminishing factor was 0.4. This was ofc with 0 to EM compensation.
Adding lvl5 compensation took the resist up to 70% (ie, 2% more).
New experiment - same ship (stripped of the earlier plate and compensation skill back to 0).
This time, a 30% EM plate was added to the base 60%. This time, having same deminishing 0.4 factor - the EM resist ended up on 72%.
Adding lvl5 compensation raised the resist to 75% (ie, 3% more).
From the above, it is clear that the compensation skill is a factor applied to the different sizes of the plates - linearly. However, the compensation skill is not effected by the same deminishing return as the passive plate.
Conclusion - the better the passive plates are (high resists), the more you get from the compensation skill.

Yea, I gathered that it affected the passive plates (btw, why did you switch to talking about the armor skills instead of shield?)
My question is if it provided any bonus at all to the active hardeners while they are active.

No, absolutly no affect to active mods...
More to think on, if your cap gets sucked dry and the hardners go ofline, you would still be receiveing 15% resist..
Thats why peops normaly max em compensation,15% resist could win you that fight.

So its going to be a viable skill set for me in 2-3 years? ^^ I'd rather crosstrain then skilling that, but maybe some fellow wants to add a story, where he clearly states he survived bacause of comp skills... oh well... gonna take a look at complex passives.

I don't know if EVE would be around that time tbh, but yeah.
all things considered all comp skills maxed in both shields and armour is a good thing to have.
shields because if you have an invuln and you run out of cap, you still have a passive bonus resistance applied that is somewhat equivalent to a T1 ANP, if I'm not mistaken.
same thing happens to active armour hardeners. that tiny resistance extra that an active hardener gives while inactive can be the difference between a great victory, or a dog's death. ---

Directly from the Description tab for the skill:
Quote: To active shield hardeners: 3% bonus per skill level to Shield EM resistance when the modules are not active To passive shield hardeners: 5% bonus per skill level to Shield EM resistance
Bolded for emphasis; you only get a boost to the shield resist if your active hardener is offline.

it is not about being offlined if you dont have cap to activate the hardener you still get some resistance |
