Let me preface: WTF.
By what stretch of the imagination is a pair of pants worth more than two Scorpion battleships? And since when did it become acceptable for a monocle to be worth more than some faction-fitted Machariels? It doesn't make any sense. It's like CCP inflated the aurum cost of the NEX items by a factor of 1000.
They already invested the time in making new clothing and items, why not merely make lots of retextured variations of the NEX items, and drop the aurum prices by a factor of 1000? Then they might actually have enough item diversity to make converting PLEX to Aurum worthwhile, because there would actually be market demand for NEX items sold for ISK.
I know CCP is just tired of looking at 'Unearned Service Revenue' getting bigger and bigger on their balance sheet...but that's the price they paid for selling people PLEX in the first place. There is no free way out of it. The player base isn't stupid. We're not going to part with multiple PLEXes for a single monocle. For an entire PLEX, I'd expect enough vanity items for several wardrobes.
Also, anyone else figured out that 'Aurum' is the latin word for gold? Hell, that's the reason that the symbol for gold on the periodic table is Au. I find it a bit humorous that the new currency is gold.

You're about a week late, read any number of posts created in the last week and you'll have countless theories to choose from.
The most popular and accepted theory is, NeX items are really targeted toward ISK Rich players. Ones that freeload off CCP, consuming PLEX to get AUR and NeX items the ISK Rich player lowered their liquidity, potentially forcing them not participate in new NeX items, in which case if they wanted to continue to play, they need to subscribe via other methods. The increase in price of PLEX due to demand means they start to out-price the average consumer, who also can no longer afford to play for free, so they subscribe as well.
Mind you, that's my pretty cynical point of view.. I have more rational points of view, but I just wanted to push your buttons more.

'Rich' players don't freeload off of CCP. Someone else paid CCP for that PLEX with IRL$, which in turn, was purchased for ISK in game.
As others have stated before, there's a lot of outstanding PLEX that have already been paid for. The technical accounting term for this is 'Unearned Service Revenue' - the services that are owed in return for cash already collected.
The cheap and easy solution for CCP, in this case, is to get people to void out their outstanding PLEX, in return for something other than game time. It's really quite cunning and devious, what CCP did there.
It's just so poorly thought out that pants are more expensive than battleships now.

EVE rich people got rich for a reason... One of those reasons is 'not wasting ISK on stupid overpriced ****'.
Don't see where CCP got that bright idea.

Actually, wrong. There's plenty of ISK-rich people that have expensive novelty ships in their hanger because they can.
They got rich because they know hot to make ISK and how to make it fast.
And yes, OP is late. Several threads in MD alone about this already.

Edited by: Lederstrumpf on 28/06/2011 13:27:03 The price of an item is quite irrelevant.
The question is whether there's a person rich enough to afford it and whether adding some service on top (e.g. front door delivery) adds some earning opportunity for a trader.
In today's real world there are cars which are less expensive than the fuel filled into it, too.
Maybe monocles were made out of supercarriers by the Jovians and have some superpowers not yet uncovered? lol
