It's common knowledge that smartbombs have varying radii as a function of their size and quality. However, I haven't been able to find out precisely where that radius begins. Is there a central point on each ship that the smartbomb emanates out from? Or is there a spherical collision radius on each ship, to which the radius of the smartbomb is added?
Basically, do capital ships get a larger smartbomb radius because of their ship's higher inherent size, or is a significant amount of the volume of their smartbomb occupied by their own ship?
For that matter, same question on orbit radii.

That is an interesting question and I suspect the answer is a closely guarded supercap pilot secret.

You could probably figure it out experimentally using 2 ships. Two ships on grid know their distance from each other, I imagine the radius you are looking for begins based on one ship's distance from another.
If you have access to supers, you can fly around them and note your distance and figure out where that point is. You can also mount smartbombs on them and test to see if you get hit at certain points.

Well, normally I'm more inclined to farm out neuting and smartbombs to subcapital ships (you can't put a capital RR module on a subcap, but you can put a smartbomb on it). There are no capital smartbombs afterall.
If, however, smartbombs do get a significantly larger radius on (super)capital ships, then this argument sort of breaks down. There's something to be said for a hidden 20% or whatever boost on smartbomb ranges.

It seems to me that each selectable object in the game is surrounded by a sphere just barely large enough to contain it. If you enter the sphere you are considered to be 0 meters away. For example, when undocking from a station you always appear at a specific point and your distance from the station is 0m, even though you're not touching it. You also have to travel several kilometers before your official distance from the station changes. The actual listed range to the target is the distance to the edge of that sphere.
I would imagine a similar sphere for any super capital. A smart bomb with a range of 5000m would cover the entirety of that sphere, which could be up to 15km across for a 15km long Titan, and then another 5000m beyond it's edge. Resulting an a damage dealing sphere 25 km across instead of the expected 10 km. A 1000m long battleship would have a damage sphere 11km across, a smaller difference.
Mind you I haven't really tested this purposefully. The bit about stations is definitely true, but I'm not 100% sure if it's a sphere or if this applies to smaller objects. It does seem that way, and it would be a sensible way to code the game...except for the occasional oddity with large objects. There might also be something else extending smartbomb ranges for capital ships.

It has nothing to do with the ship and only the distance in the overview. If you are within the range of the smartbomb in overview it hits, else it doesn't.

Yes, and how does the overview calculate the distance from ship A to ship B? Edge of ship to edge of ship? Absolute center to absolute center?

Quite. On that subject, what is the radius of a typical Titan (say, Erebus). Of a supercarrier (Nyx)?
Remember: The volume of a sphere increases as the cube of the radius, so if the titan is even 26% of the smartbomb's radius, it has doubled the volume. If 44%, it has tripled it.
This is significant!

I have no empirical data on the subject but I recall a dev comment when titans were first introduced to the effect that they'd had to change the way smartbombs worked on them so that the range was measured from the edges of the model because otherwise the radius could be entirely contained within the model and therefore would have no effect.
Of course that goes back five years or so so there's a chance it's changed since and I don't recall whether the same applied to supercarriers or other capitals, or indeed whether it was a global change. --
