Edited by: Safaomae on 21/02/2005 20:25:47 ... well, are the Amarr assault ships worth the skill investment?
they are certainly (obviously) alot harder than a punisher, but I'm not sure if I'd go for the the khanid innovation (higher shields, more med slots, launcher point) or the other one (higher armour, more low slots, 4th gun hardpoint)
I'm at the point where I want to move on from frigates to something a bit harder... and am not sure whether to invest my time to get an assault ship, or just go straight for a cruiser
any ideas?

Im guessing from your "i move on from frigates" comment that you are a newish player, so i would recommend going for a cruiser, the assault ships are expensive to lose and as far as i know are not very useful for things such as mission running to make isk. ------------------------------------------------- Defend Amarr space, join the Auctoritan Syndicate today |

Since you're just moving up from frigates, I wouldn't suggest even considering tech II ships. You should definitely not try flying elite frigs into pvp until you're quite familiar fighting with standard frigs (20-50 incursi are good for learning this skill) and against pretty much everything else. Not to mention, the Amarr AFs are pretty subpar, though the Retribution is nice for doing l3 missions. Not that l3 missions can't be done easily in a Maller. Supremacy Keepin it Real |

The road to getting to a HAC is through the AC skill. HAC requires AC to be IV to train. The only thing you could get away with is not training your frig skill to V. It will only take 14 days (or less) to train to amarr frig V from IV I would suggest training up to V.
As far as the ships themselves...
Retribution seems ill suited for 1v1 PvP with its one mid slot and no missile turrents (would mean that you either have to outrun missiles or suck up the damage). With a gang I am sure that this ship can be a nasty little monster. In PvE that one missile slot would be sorely missed, at least from my experience with ships.
Vengeance has a nice balance of slots and a missile turrent. With this ship you could tank very well and still be able to use EW. This will be the ship that I am flying in less then two days.
Btw, both ships would be armor tanking .
These are just my views. Take them with a grain of salt if they do not meet your wants.

I'm thinking now that I'll head in the direction of the Prophecy via the maller... not so many skills to train up.
I do like amarr ships I figured that it'll take less time to get a bigger ship if I stick to the same offensive methods (ie, lasers)

First off if you are indeed a new player go for cruisers, the assault ship class is a big investment and there truely are many other skills required to be a good assault ship pilot. Engineering skills and electronic skills to be sure. Also tech II weapons on those things should be considered standard on assault ships. Despite the mean tank you can put on the retribution you might be able to get away with tech one weapons but I'd say go for tech II stuff if you're going to push for the assault frigs anyhow...
Furthermore, the retribution IS good for running agent missions if you manage to outfit it decently and have the skills to keep up. That one mid slot is sorely missed but the armor makes up for it and then some. It's hard to PvP ONLY because being able to fit a single scrambler alows many to get away, and without a web you can't do much to hold other frig pilots. However, with a wingman you're pretty much unstopable. And a smartbomb can do pretty good against smaller missles. Though I'd reccomend a NOS for pirateing. Again though, seeing as you seem relativily new go for cruisers, they work better with agent missions and they're much cheaper to maintain and lose (if you buy good insurance).
The vengence is a decent assault frig as assault frigs go but it pays for those medium slots by only having 4 high slots and 3 low slots. Holding a tank with three low slots is no fun. It's alright for PvP solo ganking and support, but overall lacks the tank nessecary to hold armed targets for long. It does have redeeming values other than the launcher hp. You get more cpu but a big strike against powergrid... and I mean ouch. nearly 10 pw gone and for a frig that's alot. Oh and you have a larger cap and in perspective a better recharge rate.

Sure you can jump into a Prophecy quickly but you will still need a bundle of skills to run it properly. My advise is to: write out your skill training into a set plan, go to the skill section and ask what skills you need to run X ship properly as to make adjustments to your plan, and take your time to get all the skills you need before purchasing the skip. Otherwise you just may end up with your ship being a hunk of scrap metal.

very true, I'll need all the medium laser, medium repairer skills, and skills to keep a tank running etc... I think i'm heading in the right direction, allthough rather slowly
