Yeah, it was neat to see the ships in the docking bay and neat to see my characters as full models, but seriously: The slow-down on docking when in single account mode was annoying: When playing two accounts at once was insane.
So now, "Render station environment: OFF" is my best friend. Back to actually playing Eve how it is meant. I dock, I re-load, re-arm, grab a mission, contact or what-not and back into space.
The one major annoyance, now: To see my cargo bay, I first have to open the ships list.
Sorry, CCP, but the whole Captains Quarters is a bust, *especially* when turning it all off makes for a *massive* improvement in game play. (My system isn't exactly new, but it sure as heck isn't bottom of the line, either)

This also makes me laugh....at any other game company you'd be fired and lolled out of the industry....but at CCP its a technological breakthrough worthy of much praise and cheering.

I also turned it off. In my case, it was taking too long to load.
Having a screen sitting behind what I was doing, pulsing slightly and saying "loading" offends me. SO I turned it off.

So what did CCP do the other 5.5 years or is that something that's best left unspoken?
Personally I liked what I saw in the old teasers and such and don't see why they would throw all that out of the window for ... this (looks at the turd in the corner). Fitted eve much better than what we got.

I suspect they came up with a new contractual agreement with nVidea, and were forced to start again because it would have been too much work to strip out all the AMD/ATI optimization code.

Got had a bunch done and realized their technology was so far ahead of the curb that it was going to take graphics card makers 5-6 years to produce a video card that could render more than a couple characters on the screen, basically making it impossible to interact with people in stations.
They had to start over to throttle down and make it possible to meet with friends and have a busy station.

and I too turned it off ... I'm still really looking forward to them expanding it out into stations and actually have stuff to do, but as it is now it's just not worth all the system overload. Maybe once they put in some mini-games or something? *shrug*

You know what's funny ? I *know* that :) You know what's even funnier ? It completely, totally and absolutely makes Aurum purchases worthless and therefore pointless.
If we have to turn off the station environment to play the game in an enjoyable manner, then we'll never see the vanity items. While I'm not one for them myself, I certainly can't see anyone investing real money into an item that they'll never actually see on their character.

Well, obviously that part is still forthcoming...
Considering they had to start over from scratch 6 months ago, I'd say they're doing OK. :)

This is a silly response - One, I suspect is just so you can see your own words.
My post isn't an "Eve/CCP sucks!" post, it wasn't a ragequit post, it wasn't even a "give me a +10,000 heavy missile launcher of black-hole generation for 10 ISK" post; It was a comment on the fact that Ghu knows how many years of development has created a massive 'feature' of the game that people are turning off so that they can keep playing the game.
One would think that at least someone would have actually tested the Captains Quarters on a ~$1000 PC, saw that it slowed down the docking procedure massively and simply killed the project from there.
It would seem that someone (ok, a *lot* of someones) at CCP forgot that a very large portion of the players dock and undock in less than a minute: I.e. dock up to get more ammo, drones or cargo, do a repair or grab a mission and immediately undock.
Captains Quarters literally turned what was a 30-40 second task into a multi-minute ennui with "Loading..." plastered in front of our eyes.

Hilmar already said that he expects everyone to be spending ~$3000 a year on EVE because it's "like golf." So what's spending $8000 on a new PC every couple years?

Performance issues aside, once I saw that there wasn't anything that couldn't be done more quickly and easily with a mere click of a button, I turned it off.
All that work to make something I literally used for about a minute.

Talk about being out of touch with your customers.
At the risk of making assumptions myself (Which I'm sure many will correct me if I'm wrong), but: Most of us who are into the games that need higher-end hardware tend to either build our own machines, or have them built for us at local shops. Gaming rig companies like Alienware make pretty ads for people with more money than brains, but if you're going to keep up with a hobby like computer gaming, it's only common sense to start either building your own rigs, or at the very least, modding the one you've got.
My current machine, when I assembled it two years ago, was close to top-of-the-line and it doesn't even use SLI (Frankly, my vision isn't such that I notice a difference between 1 GFX card or two, so I don't spend the extra $500 on a second card) To date, I *still* play *all* my games at MAX settings, at 2600 x 1650, if the game supports it, and don't have any in my repertoire that slows down.
Even Captains Quarters: Once the silly thing is loaded, Eve runs fine: It's that "Loading..." screen that kills it and, of course, all bets are off when two or more clients are running.
But when I built this thing ? $1400 or so, not including the 30" monitor, which I had before.
$8000 on a gaming rig ? I don't think so. $4,000 on a gaming rig ? I *still* don't think so. $2,000 on a gaming rig ? Maybe, if my current one is over five years old and I can't get a decent performance enhancement by upping the gfx card, memory or CPU. But that'll still be maybe once every 5 years and still probably less than two grand.
Back in the old days (when dinosaurs still ruled the Earth and all that), when I worked for an ISP, we kept an average PC with a dial-up modem that would first dial an exchange outside our home city, then back into the companys' servers - We did that *specifically* so we'd know what the users' experience really was like. We *also* had at least three accounts with our competitors, so we knew what *their* customers' experiences were like, too. That was just plain common sense and good business.

Considering you clearly haven't looked at the shortcuts window, you can simply press alt+c to open your cargo bay.

I have to admit that I have turned it off on a few of my accts.
I takes nearly a minute to load the hanger on my indy characters as it is (200+ ship types and near 900 ships total). I get an fps of 1 or 2 while waiting for my items to open. And I max at 15 to 25 fps when everything settles down.
This is with a o/c GTX 590, 16 GB ram, SS drive and i7 2600k.
So yes, there are some issues right now. I have faith that CCP's wizards will get the code optimized soon enough and I can have the CQ open on all my accts.
I've been waiting three years for this and I can wait a little longer. This is but the first small step in a new era for game I love. And will love more as it's opened up for human interactions in an open station environment.
Before you ask, I can neither confirm nor deny I am a CCP alt

I understand what you are saying. But CCP is much nicer than some other games I played. The last one came right out and said in the next upgrade if your graphics card didn't handle DX10 and 3D graphics with 1GB memory and you had less than 4GB of RAM you would not be able to play this game. I upgraded, spent 250.00 on a grapics card, and the upgrade was a let-down. Most of the MMO's out there now require much more than what EVE requires. Consider yourself lucky that this even plays on a laptop at all. And it might help to prepare yourself for the things to come. Some will be good and some not so.
