Edited by: Rone Corbusier on 30/06/2011 07:57:05 EDIT: I TOLD you I was tired. Have requested a move to Warfare & Tactics
I thought it might be interesting to discuss the potential, and issues surrounding dual boxing frigates for getting a bit more out of (one player, not solo) pew pew.
I'm not interested in 'fly cruisers it's easier / cheaper' but I will try to cover the issues faced by opting to dual box frigates only.
You can nit-pick the terminology but I include everything up to Interdictors in this category for the purposes of this discussion.
Reasons why you would want to do this?
- It's fun!
- It's a challenge!
- solo frigate vs. a class up can be difficult at times due to med neuts, drones, EHP, lack of ewar options with limited slots and similar concerns. Two frigs can somewhat nullify these risks.
- It generally opens up more viable combat, also from recent experience a lot of people have backup or fly with a buddy. Especially people farming and camping complexes in low sec in Dramiel & AF
- Have more (if not much) of a chance vs instalocking camps / interdictor camping
Reasons it is difficult?
- Frigate engagements tend to be over in 30s - 2 mins/ Usually lasting a little under a minute. Frigate fights are FAST and you need to do a lot of micromanagement of modules and heat. Having to do that x2 is fairly daunting.
- At least one frigate would need to be 'fire and forget' with little to no nannying required. This is not exactly realistic but measures should be taken to ease the pain!
- small ehp on both ships and getting pods out safe could be an issue.
Possible combinations?
- Dictor and Interceptor: Can initial bubble with a dictor scouting in 0.0, or use the interceptor to tackle THEN bring in the dictor for dps. Scouting interceptor but bringing in the dictor for initial tackle will make you more likely to survive any camps but spoils surprise if you bring in second ship through the gate before decloaking.
- Dual AF's: Esp Caldari / Jaguars can be made more passive input than other ships and pack quite a chunk of ehp and dps. Are slow and lack scouting survivability of interceptors.
- Tech I frigs. Super cheap and non-threatening. Pair of Incursus are fairly maintenance free, or plate rifters?
- dual dictors. One bubble fit, one dps and tank, decloak the tank fit and bubble later if necessary?
- one EWAR + tackle. EAF's certainly suffer when trying to solo but could be a great addition as a long range passive input setup. Even the Hyena could be of some use in this situation to get initial tackle and hold a ship down while you bring in something slower and high damage like an AF.
- I'm new to all this stuff and tired and probably making assumptions about what you will infer from my rambling and this probably reads badly. Maybe after some player input I can rewrite this into some collective ideas thread.

I've never heard of people using dual frigates in PvP, that is pretty crazy, the amount of attention you'd need to pay to both hulls and the fact they are incredibly fragile will often lead to disastrous results
However, Dramiel/Interceptor + Stealth Bomber is incredibly common amongst FW mission bears. ...Then when you stopped to think about it. All you really said was Lalala. |
