As regards to weapon grouping, Corp mate said on ts last night that when he grouped his missiles, he got about 2% less damage compared to un-group. I'll have to try that with the pulse lasers later on. Thoughts? Anyone ever studies this?

Edited by: Aquana Abyss on 30/06/2011 15:02:45 If you want to alpha stuff like with an arty maelstrom fleet, you will want stuff grouped.
If you're very concerned about tracking (for example your cruiser being tight orbitted by an AF or close range inty vs inty) it can work out better and give more chance to hit assuming their orbit oscillates between trackable and not trackable if you stagger your shots slightly using ungrouped.
Edit: also forgot - ungrouped you will see quickly when you're burning out guns by overheat, you miss this while grouped (particularly I find in inties with more rapid fire).

Each ungrouped missle generates a change for a defender missle launch. Do 6 ungrouped launches get 6 opportunities for a defender missle launch. Where 1 grouped launch only gets 1 roll for defender launch. Missles I would think would be the most affected by ungrouping that guns.
Now there is the one aspect of over kill. where 2 missles would finish off a target, but the whole group of missiles is considered wasted DPS. Granted that might be micromanaging there, but thats up to each pilot.

There is no way that ungrouped missiles perform better than grouped missiles. The only disadvantage with grouped missiles is the wasted DPS in the last volley. Like the person above said, you will face more defenders with ungrouped missiles, and that translates directly to less DPS.
In my Caldari character, I counted the number of volleys it took to destroy targets grouped vs. ungrouped, and the grouped attempts were always 1-5 volleys fewer to take out a target.

People have debated for years on this subject, nobody's really come to a consensus. -------- Enemy corps raided into disbandment: Three.

i belive its down to micromanagement and effect.
Sometimes you want a grouped hit (missiles) Sometimes you want a high alpha and pod (7+1 artys) Sometimes you want to split your dps on say support and primary (50/50)
most pvp ships you dont want any of the above so just group everything for less things to click on.

Been through this a bajillion times: There is no functional difference between grouped and ungrouped weapons.
NPC defenders launch just as frequently when grouped, damage mitigation from defenders is unchanged. Each gun still gets its own tracking/damage calculation when grouped, damage is unchanged.
The ONLY things one should be aware of are: - Overkill: When damage of a grouped volley exceeds the target EHP. Most applicable in PvE, using 2-3 smaller groups is often advantageous. - LAZORS!: Often a good idea to not use grouping in prolonged firefights as a staggered firing sequwnce can extend cap life significantly. If a crystal breaks the entire group has to be reloaded (or ungroup, reload offending gun, regroup .. but :ugh:)
Not tested extensively, but supposedly: Heat used to be applied on an individual module basis so if a single gun burned out the whole group suffered. That was changed so that heat is distributed evenly within the group and using dummy mods/empty slots as heat sinks act to extend total time in heat.
For reference.

Edited by: Monstress on 01/07/2011 11:19:36 I've found that having two separate groups for your weapons can be handy when you need to manage overheat damage more effectively.

I tried it last night on a zealot using heavy pulse 2's, I actually thought that ungrouped was inferior to grouped. I'm not a missile guy, so I can't really comment, however, corp mate was adamant that he was getting about 2% less dps using group. Sent from a campfire using smoke signals. |
