Thats like giving up smoking and doing crack?
Why are all the leaving threads in short "I am leaving EVE for XXXX game"?
Only two people said they were going to focus on RL, this is really concerning
Note: This doesnt apply to ANYONE that focuses on coding, RMT or anyone planning on making a career directly or indirectly out of games.
For everyone else, u mad? .

RL is what you make of it, if people put the same effort in studying etc as they do in gaming / trolling all EVE players would have multiple PHDs .

In this day & age you are not supposed to care about other people only yourself & if you have enough shoes or a Monocle or something.

Because people play games so they can be or do something they can't be in RL. I can't actually fly interstellar spaceships IRL, sadly. If I could, I assure you I wouldn't be playing eve.
I think the comparison to drugs is poor, and insulting. Games are a means to an end, and its a perfectly reasonable end.
A more apt comparison might be giving up fishing and taking up farming instead. You could choose to not eat, but the aim of the exercise was to acquire food. Choosing to not acquire food because you don't find fishing a satisfactory means of doing so is pointless and ultimately self-defeating.

I imagine the answer is that the vast majority of people who make these announcements are not yet burdend with needing to worry about "real life", not that this is a bad thing, mind you. Nor is real life actually relevant to one's gameing hobby.

Which would all become instantly worthless in todays economy since most of them don't come with a marketable skill set :D

Because they use EVE to cover (some of) their free time. Without EVE, they need something else.

I play games to balance what I do when I don't play games. I don't see why I need to focus on RL more just because I switch games. My RL is fine; I have a few hours every week dedicated to playing because all work no play makes etc.

There are a lot of people in EVE who's only achievements over the past few years are represented in this game. Any change to EVE is a change to their "life".
Pathetic husks of men who deserve neither pity nor compassion. CCP has a tool to remove this cancerous playerbase and that tool is "The Monocle"!

Games are entertainment. If you leave a game and suddenly stop playing games in general, you'd need to find another form of entertainment. Another hobby.
I have many hobbies personally. There are times when I'm not playing games at all for months or even a year. But for many, gaming is the one hobby.

I play games cause my mother got a pet Giraffe and I'm sick of her bringing it into the sitting room. It ****s all over the place and we have to cover the floor with newspapers. It also ate one of my favourite plants in the bathroom and she spends all her time with it and won't even come to watch me play in the connect four European championships. My life is ****ing hell and I need somewhere to get away from it.

Most likely because you (read: The Internet) have no bussniess knowing what they do with their private time? But my apologies, I will furthermore always inform you, good sir, what I shall do next other then playing EVE, since you find this to be relevant to post in a quitting-this-game post.
Signing off to cut the grass, I shall then logon to consult you whether I should let my wife cut my hair or if I should cook dinner first.

Not everyone has great fulfilling rl's, not everyone has the money or the inclination to put themselves through endless hours of classroom education (which I personally find soul soul-destroyingly dull)
Besides, just because the rest of society thinks accumulating as much wealth as possible is the road to happiness doesn't mean it actually IS right, there seems to be a really narrow definition of what human beings SHOULD do with their time. We work to survive, no way around that, but my free time is mine to spend on whatever I want, I choose to spend it on escapism, be it games books or television.
Also your analogy sucks, quitting eve to play another game is a far cry from quitting smoking (which while extremely harmful is completely legal and generally accepted) and taking up crack (which destroys lives much faster than ciggies). I would say its like giving up smoking and taking up drinking.

im talking about quitting threads where people announce what they are doing after quitting, I dont really care much about what you and your imaginary wife do for fun .

Im quite sure that many people who backed off from EVE are spending more time IRL. People usually dont announce it. Even people who switched to a new game probably are spending less total time in game - for now.
Wherever you went - Here you are.

Not sure this is either important or that it requires explanation, but I'll bite.
Scenario (hypothetical):
Warhammer 40,000 tabletop gamer has played for years. Games Workshop changes the rulebook and he/she is completely and totally against everything about it. Reluctantly, this player would rather not play than play by unfair or poorly thought out changes. Said player goes to play another tabletop game like Warmachine or Battletech. Why? He/she enjoys tabletop gaming as his/her preferred medium and is in search to try something new and find another area in which to enjoy his hobby.
Similarly: Paintball player has played for years. The field he loves to play at has enacted obnoxious rules and made changes that breaks the player's hobby for him/her. Paintballer plays at other fields.
Either way, most who play these sorts of games are gamers by hobbyist trade, if you will. EVE is not the only game out there and if somebody is tired of it or doesn't like it for one reason or another, another "field" will be employed to satisfy their entertainment.
However Michael Jordan did say "hey, I'm gonna go pro golf." So who the hell knows what people end up doing. It really only matters to them...
Doesn't it?

Actually its more like; I don't like this tennis club any more so I think I will join another one instead.
And nothing like; I gave up smoking so I could become a crack addict.
See what I did there? No, probably not.

I have one PhD and trust me, one is too much.
We, well I play games for enjoyment, if CCP kills Eve I still will look for another game to fill that part of my life. I "only" spend about 10 hrs/week on Eve. So even if Eve dies, I'll have to find something else to fill those 10 hrs and the most direct one is another, or a couple more games.
