Doubt it will pass... As soon as someone notifies them they're all guilty of this or will be guilty of this if it passes. Furthermore who the hell is going to spend time tracking all the people... Especially all the kids that do this.
Just in case though best to start learning how to encrypt your packets. Or use proxy servers...

The conclusion that the article on demandprogress is not "exactly accurate", if you read the proposed bill; which doesn't create a new law, it modifies an existing law; you can see that the bill is specifically aimed towards people who are streaming content that is pre-release. As evidenced in the text of the bill that changes:
Quote: (C) by the distribution of a work being prepared for commercial distribution, by making it available on a computer network accessible to members of the public, if such person knew or should have known that the work was intended for commercial distribution.
to:
Quote: (C) by the distribution, or public performance of a work being prepared for commercial distribution, by making it available on a computer network accessible to members of the public, if such person knew or should have known that the work was intended for commercial distribution.
You should also note that the bill only changes the law for section "section 506 (a)(1)(A)", which criminalizes copyright infringements Quote: "(A) for purposes of commercial advantage or private financial gain."
So contrary to the article posted on demandprogress, people singing a song in a Karaoke bar, or putting a song in the background of a Youtube video, (which could be an infringement), are not going to be impacted by this law or dragged off to jail.
Now if you are in the business of distributing pre-release movies, music or video games, then this law directly applies to you.

Edited by: Vogue on 03/07/2011 03:25:06 Yes the UK has more surveillance per square mile of urban areas than any other nation. Myself I don't have a problem with this with the caveat that CCTV footage should be taken in the context that it may not show undisclosed pre-cursors to a criminal event monitored by camera. Though CCTV has not stopped the recent UK cultural phenomenon of dogging in supermarket car parks.
The 'UK nanny state' has a flaw in far leftist thinking that the poorer off trapped into a moral abyss and so should be absolved of their sins. Though most people in the UK believe in a social contract between giving government benefits to the poor. And I confess I receive government benefits myself. If I had to pay a lot of money for a particular type of medication that I need I assume I would have to If I lived in the USA then I would be far worse off.
It could be said a mentality offshoot of a widespread western European 'nanny state' is that there is a fear of failure in corporate ventures. In the USA [copied quote] people start things, fail and shake themselves down and start things again. The animal spirit of capitalism is stronger there." But then the flip side is that such red tooth capitalism can punish those harder who have a skill set that has been exported as part of globalization. A lot of the working and middle classes in the USA have been gutted with no reprieve from a combination of reaganomics and globalization.
The internet has created a new economic strata. But also it has also atomized apart town communities into higher regional groupings. The original notions of the 'global village' when the internet was nascent fell apart as its 'happiness machines' were driven by simple social and economic connectivity over local cultural roots and heritage. Now there are global marketing identities for cars and cloths. Shopping malls in the UK, USA, China look very much similar. On a internet chat show I there was an internet business man who ventured the idea of local internet community sites. Events, labor resources, news and politics could be pooled into say one portal for a town. If this happened it would be of tremendous benefit to the human condition. It has been observed that people in small villages will far more readily help someone who has fallen down on a street than say if it happened in a big city.
This is me being a carebear. But alas is it just true that we are spoiled in having more than what we need and we expect to keeping getting more with 'progress'. And what has been a big driver in communities in the past is that when people did not have enough they sought community with others.

I liked your post, and on the more helpful people from town I can see a correlation in people enjoying a hobby on the internet as the new "townsy" correlation of the Internet population.
If I know someone that plays say EVE or LOTRO I will be by nature more disposed to help him virtually or at least listen to him in the Internet, if I met them physically though I would revert my treatment to the point of almost severing any kind of social contact with said person again. This has happened to me and some of my rl friends when meeting other EVE players for example.
We have created our own small towns already in the corps/guilds/kinships of MMO's again, in the global community of the net you have the forum communities of games you like and enjoy posting, people that correlate to you on the same level as if they were from your town.
Newcomers will always be treated with derision, this happens in eve and any other social media, but In a sense even if you are obnoxious, you will carve a niche in said community.
This line of thought and social interaction is worth researching, since most big media companies are slowly turning the computer into the next TV set of the future, and we need to make the Internet much more than an overpriced tv.
Man I love the random thoughts and ideas discussed here sometimes.

Edited by: Herzog Wolfhammer on 07/07/2011 16:10:50 As an owner of guns, land, trucks, and other items requiring responsibility and minimal interference with "authoritors" who see anything they don't like and think "there should be a law!", I have warned people for decades. Yet sheeple who don't own land hear of the practices that government uses to steal land, and it does not register. Those who think they have no money, or better yet, get back a little check (a fraction of taxes they paid in) and think "I don't pay taxes!!!!1!! never really "hear" about the things the IRS does to people over taxation or that all taxes only go to serve interest on a national debt and nothing more. Those who slurp their pretentious little lattes in their pretentious little hybrids don't care if some statist wants to tell anybody what they should drive (though they go get miffed if you can break their conditioning long enough to make them listen to the proposed laws to put extra tax on hybrids).
The bottome line that someday somehow an out of control government eventually gets to something or someone you care about. And I am the one who has done everything within the system to fight them so when the "finally screwed over" arrive with faces painted blue shouting "freeeedommmm!" I'm the one standing there saying "where the f**k were you when..<insert previous to latest tyranny here> so now shut up and enjoy your slavery because you didn't give a sh*t when you were sheepling along in bliss as long as they didn't screw you over so now I'm not going to stand up for your dumb ass".
To all who are worried about this: welcome to the party. This battle has been going on a long time (since 1789 actually when the land speculators threw out the Articles of Confederation - those land speculators are also known as "The Founding Fathers") and you look like idiots to the veterans who tried to warn you back when all you would do is smirk and giggle.
