Having been sent to defend countless "trader gates" "civilian sites" and never seeing any civis using the same gates as us. I have started to think the gates we are using are all owned by the military's of the empires.
well my main question is are the gates that we use all military ( in some forum ) owned gates?

That's a good question for the Storyline guys.
My interpretation is that they are "sanctioned" for capsuleer use by an institution like CONCORD, and as such they are reinforced. Obviously there are many more gates in EVE and they are not limited to binary systems (trolol, old prime fiction). In addition, capsuleers can build jump bridges at POSes as a game mechanic.

Edited by: Salvatore Satriani on 02/07/2011 21:05:02 Yes, I have noticed this as well, however I remember a couple times, but not rescently. I saw NPC haulers of different variations flying to and through jump gates we use.
So to say civvies don't use them is probably wrong. Due to that fact, I even clicked that said it was a civillian hauler carrying cargo and whatnot.
Have y'all seen what I'm talking about?... Its been a while they probably aren't arround anymore. Didn't seem like they served a purpose anyways.

I always got the impression that the capsule interface we see when playing doesn't bother to display the majority of civilian vessels. So while they are using our gates the pod doesn't consider them important enough to add an icon on the overview, let alone a 3d representation.

Perhaps the stargates are the public gates, and the "trader gates" and such we see in missions are just 2 way gates for private use? So some trading network exists between 2 systems not immediately linked by the public gates?
I would love to see some fiction about who staffs the 'main' gates. Especially the ones in nullsec.

Included is an excerpt from the Deklein regional description, which if you haven't seen already is quite interesting.

Of course, some never would return...

so there's no true out line of why we use the gates we do and there's all these others gates that we never use rarely see at all.

That's awesome, thanks! So who pays the gate operators? Concord?

Presumably, yes - I've always assumed that things like alliance maintenance fees and now the sovereignty fees went towards upkeep of stargates, among many other things.
Another odd little thing worth noting is that, buried away in unused files, there are several character attributes that would have effected your character for the entirety of its existence, based on things like bloodline, home empire, school you graduated from, etc... they can be found here at the games.chruker.dk site. Anyway, under bloodline bonuses is one for Amarr - "-50% reduction in cost for using Amarrian stargates." So, at some point in development, there was possibly going to be a cost or tax for using a stargate. ----------------------------------------------

I am also guessing the crews of Stargates while they sit in their indestructible wormhole generators must also have to remain neutral, which is why they cant tell you there is a gate camp.(and even if a gate can be destroyed, a pod pilot would not want to **** off the Gatekeeper's Union for their next jump might be "Accidentally" miscalculated and they never are seen again. I can imagine a controller missing a zero in a mass calculation before jumping a ship would be bad, as in crossing the streams bad for the ship in the gate).

Ive always thought the other gates were secret, illegal ones. In the novels it made it seem like everyone used the official ones. -- "Far be it from me to stand in judgment. I prefer to sit." -Stephen Colbert |

well, having been sent to defend trader gates from pirate camps, im not so sure the gate net work we use is the full part of it, or the ones we use are military access only and that's why most of them have guards at them.

Or they are indeed private ones, build by a corporation, but only for their own ships. Everybody else gets rejected for lacking the proper authorisation.
