As for dropping PS3 shipments, Although Sony already released information about PS4, the sources is still conservative about the new gaming console's shipments as the gaming market has recently been impacted strongly by online devices such as tablet PCs.

Playstations always featured backwards compatibility, game industry isn't using full potential of current technology, takes years to make use of new technology, blah blah, said it 3 times in other threads. Feel bad for repeating it.

Actually Sony seems to be shying away from backwards compatibility. They pretty much phased it out of PS3's.

The original launch systems had Backwards Compat. But it was software emulation that was sketchy at times as to what would work and what would not. They dropped it with later system versions.
The recent trend is they are releasing select old PS2 games via the Playstation store, some in HD (updated graphics) formats.
My best purchase from the PlayStation store was Vagrant Story. Lost it when my house was broken into years ago got it cheap on the store and play it on my PSP and PS3.
Expect the online DL to be the future of their backwards compat. IE you have to re-buy the game. And you get 5 DLs of it per unique system.
Seeing how long it was for PS3 to come to market I dont expect ps4 as soon as other systems especially since the market is not as robust as it was to support a new system launch atm. I expect they will take more time to develop it more and wait for the market to be ready for it at a later date.

I think I heard somewhere that the next generation consoles from M$ and Sony are going to be released sometime in 2014, so we've got a few years yet. -------------------

Actually I expect DL to be the future in general for all games. the game companies like the RIAA and MPAA hate the second hand market because it makes stores/ebayer money and they do not get a cut and legally cannot expect one. But with downloaded games its all locked into your account and cannot be unlocked and resold.
