First, I know this is Eve and everything is "best" at something. My question, though, is about T3s. If you had to only train for one T3, which one would it be and why? If you'd fly an X to do Y then say that.
(for me personally, I'm looking to pilot a Proteus, because I like what it offers for pvp (strong cloaks dps, long point, etc.).

Loki is the best all-round T3, it's nicely balanced, very versatile and (in usual Minnie style) is better than simple EFT numbers might suggest. Personally I'm not a fan of of the Proteus as it's too one dimensional, using the headfirst approach with a 700+ mil ship just doesn't make sense to me. Legion is "terrible" compared to the others as its use is quite limited and the Tengu is ofcourse a favorite and for good reason.
I'd choose between Tengu and Loki based on play style and general pvp scenarios. Amat victoria curam. |

Depends on where you'll be flying.
In nullsec, perhaps the best T3 is not a T3, but something cheaper that you can lose to blobs. Or any T3 that your follows your blob doctrine.
In lowsec, 100MN AB Tengu fares well. Loki might be solid choice as well, I don't normally fly my Proteus there due to vulnerability to kiting.
In w-space, the Proteus is a real beast, both as a cloaky (solo, heavy tackle, general pew) and in logi gangs, in which Legion also works well.
In hisec retardation faggotry brick slaved Proteus with Legion links, pair of neutral Guardians and 7 Falcon alts so you too can be the king of the undock.

Proteus seems the ideal lone lowsec pirate and gate camper, thats where I encounter them most anyway.
I personaly prefere the Tengu, nice solo ship PvE/PVP, great in small gangs, easy to fit and fly, which gives you more time to keep an eye on your surroundings when pvp-ing in hostile terratory, great action range.
And it's the ship, that due to it's PvE greatness, will be earned back reasonable fast, Isk wise.

I'd say the tengu and loki are about even for all-around usefulness. Triple rep Myrms are like what you'd get if you strapped a beehive to Robocop. |

Might not be the best at anything, but you can always make a fit that's viable.

loki....
pick shield or armour tank (its accepted for both widely)
capless gun use
as a booster...everyone likes or can at least use speed and agility. Got a melting pot of all races in the roam/fleet/wing/etc....its probably the most useful universal booster of em all.

Say that the FC talks about Guardians and stuff... then if you want to bring a Tengu there's really only one role you can fit it for. A Loki on the other hand can have several roles and uses, no matter tanking-doctrine. http://rnat-postmortem.blogspot.se |

Proteus has either range or DPS issues. They are great for wormholes, because you always land on your target and they are decent for nullsec ganking because they are the only T3 that can can fit a decent tank and still have 700DPS nullified. With rails its respectable DPS ...kinda and a MONSTER MONSTER tank, or a crazy tanked lach.
Legion has much the same issue, other then a a couple special configs (100mn HAM, and stupid tanked curse) It has either range or DPS issues.
Loki is likely the best all rounding, its just very very very skill intensive, you can fit it like a 80k ehp arty/AC's cane, Its arguably the best boosting ship, it decent for scouting, scanning, travel.....what ever.
Tengu is good at Tengu, which is essentially your 100Mn with booster, 10mn AB Thundercat. or active tanked carebear bot. |

If we are talking general pvp Loki is the king IMO (note i wrote IMO!) It can shieldtank, armortank, has nice bonuses (everyone likes longer web/point and speed), cloaky version is highest DPS of all T3 (nice for solo), has long range webs, has good tank/DPS ratio in general. As most minmatar ships its jack of many trades.
Second place would be proteus couse of sheer DPS madness. |

The loki has the second highest paper dps
but you can chose damage types which means you will get higher dps, if you know the resist hole is going to be not that of the proteus
also if you fit it right you get a utility high so you get a neut to kill those pesky active tank ratters |

agree, projectile have versatile damage profile. In a "not ganking ratters scenario" proteus still has best dps and best buffer. What makes Loki shine even more atm though is xasb and ridiculous omnitank |

i think it really depends on what space you live. i can only comment on wormhole space
my favorite is the legion. it locks fast, has excellent tank and puts its damage down really nice against every kind of target. Loki's are just 1 ship fits all. it can be shield or armor, cloaky work, scanning work, and everyone loves long range webs. proteus are awesome to fly, but more circumstantial i think. If youre fighting battleships, capitals or just a few ships they can turn out massive dps. however the range on them is tiny, around 5k, which means that if there are more targets and further apart they wont be nearly as efficient and will get consistently beaten by loki's and legions in putting the damage down on targets.
The tengu is a bit of a special case. most wormhole fleets tend to be armor, and there it can fill a roll of ecm tengu, very specialised. If however you fly in shield setups its an excellent ship that is easy to fit, has good tank and good damage.
In general i suppose the loki is best if you just train for a single T3 because its the most versatile. If youre not limited, id train for legion and tengu to cover both shield and armor.
actually, just get all of them. T3's are awesome |

Loki FTW !
The best all around T3 and thx to XL ASB this ship that could already hit for over 600dps keep mwd+large pithy shield booster and be cap stable just became a pure T3 murderer.
Generous PG+generous slots layout+not the best raw dps but a variety of ammo making it preferable to others+Tengu natural predator and now with some double XL-ASB's you can simply murder heavy tanked Proteus with a vicious loud smile in your face. brb |
