Dear even newer players & journalists,
As you probably know, not too long ago an email got leaked from CCP Hilmar. In it he wrote, amongst other things,
"First of we have Incarna, an amazing technological and artistic achievement. A vision from years ago realized to a point that no one could have imaged but a few months ago. It rolls out without a hitch, is in some cases faster than what we had before, this is the pinnacle of professional achievement. For all the noise in the channel we should all stand proud, years from now this is what people will remember. (...) I can tell you that this is one of the moments where we look at what our players do and less of what they say."
The tone of his email was unpleasant to read when you're a customer. After all, seeing one's complaints reduced to mere 'noise' to be ignored is never something no one really wants to hear. The man wasn't wrong, though. Incarna really IS a stunning visual achievement. And ten years from now, indeed, no one's gonna give a hoot that some crazed kids couldn't run it smoothly on their student laptops. Incarna is way ahead of the competition. The character creator in Mass Effect, for instance, is child's play compared to what Incarna offers. Sure, there are still some minor clipping issues; and facial lighting, at certain locations within one's quarters, could be improved upon. Overall Incarna offers the most realistic, detailed 3D interior ever offered in a Sci-Fi game, though. And, contrary to a rather vocal, but still small minority, Incarna runs just fine on half-way decent hardware.
Also, many folks have taken offence to "this is one of the moments where we look at what our players do and less of what they say." Who likes to be ignored, right? Again, the man was right, though. Making Incarna a reality has indeed been one of those long-term goals of CCP. They do well to stick to their vision, and not allow themselves to be derailed by people with oftentimes understandable, but nonetheless ulterior motives (like hating on Incarna because they have crappy hardware). And sometimes those ulterior motives are more insidious: like Russian botters who can now no longer deploy a drone-army of 20-year-old computers to run their botting programs off. I say, good fvcking riddance to the latter!
In fact, looking at the often most outlandish, not-well-thought-thru proposals the Assembly Hall gets bombarded with every day, one can only praise CCP for following their own line of thinking.
I'm sure at some point CCP meant to sell non-vanity, game-breaking items. The issue has been resolved, though. CCP has stated, unequivocally, that they will not sell such items thru their NeX store. And they have agreed to let the CSM watch over possible gray areas. End Of Story.
I totally love BiS (Barbie In Space). And with me many others. It will bring the RPG part of MMORPG to an entire new level, strata above what anyone else will have. And those that don't like it, they can just continue to pew-pew in space itself. Nothing is lost. There's only winners here; and whiners. The latter will fall away, though, as soon as they run out of steam.

This is where you're wrong. CCP Zulu just made the opposite statement by confirming he thinks neural remaps are a valid product to sell via micro transactions. Which is basically skill points for money which definitely is game breaking.

I'm a long time Eve follower but a relatively new player. I also get paid to write about video games. As a "journalist", I think CCP could've handled the recent drama a lot better. At the same time, the community could stand to act a bit less entitled and a bit more humble. The constant forced outrage, false assumptions and melodramatic forum posts just make the community look like whiners instead of people with a valid complaint.

Ummmm no they didn't.
From Massively: http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/06/eve-online-press-conference-answers-vital-questions-page-2/
Can you say, on the record, that there will never be any non-vanity items that give a gameplay advantage sold through micro-transactions? Can EVE survive financially without them?
Arnar: I'm going to refer back to the line I gave in the statement that the investment of money in EVE should not give you an unfair advantage over the investment of time. Saying "never" puts me in an awkward position, as EVE has been running for eight years now and hopefully if we do our job right it's going to be running for 80 more. I don't really want to put the person doing my job 80 years from now into a position where I've promised something. But I don't see it as part of the core philosophy [of EVE]. Being able to buy an unfair advantage with money is not something I can see working for EVE.
Unequivocally, no, not at all.

I have a very high end PC. My alt is a null sec PVPper.
I turned the graphics up for about 10 seconds to see the turrets fire. Fairly pretty but nothing I haven't seen in other games. I then turned them back down to fleet battle settings.
CQ - looked, groaned and immediately disabled.
NEX store? Please what a waste of time and (real) money.
I suspect there are many in the same boat as me - Incarna added nothing to the game at all. I'm glad we don't pay for expansions - yet.

I struggle with the WiS aspects of Incarna as I'm running EvE on a basic Macbook at the moment. However, I was surprised the main Internet Spaceship game ran as well as it did in the first place. Eve has to be allowed to evolve - even if I've got to upgrade my hardware from time to time to continue playing it.
People have been asking for WiS since year 0 - well it's started. Personally, I think a lot of the positive points about the expansion were lost in the uproar. I was amazed to see how well my avatar matched with the character created some months previously and thought that the detail of the CQ was excellent. If CCP had kept the original hangar view and made CQ an additional step (disembark) then 50% of the forum noise would have vanished.
With regards to Helmars email - he's a captain steering his ship. What did we think he would say to his crew? "Oh BTW guys - all the work you've done for the last 2/3 years - we're dropping it and reverting back to Incursion because of some forum tears. Thanks for trying."

People have been asking for it for a long time, that's true. I think the point that got me was the microtransactions; how they don't really belong in a subscription game and how much they are going to affect gameplay still being kind of in limbo. Because CCP's a business, they do sometimes have to rethink promises they've made in the past to increase profits. So any quotes from them saying 'we're really not going to do this' I believe as much as the promise made not to introduce microtransactions in the first place. And my system won't load cq anyway.
tl;dr I don't trust them to keep their word in this regard and my money's leaving with me and my virtual pixels.

& of course why not force loyal customers who didn't want it to use it even if keeping the old Hangar wouldn't have cost CCP anything.
Here's to the New EvE, pay real $$$ to dress the dolly & cyber with some cool people in WiS.
Have fun

roflmao - totally believable - who wouldn't love such ground breaking and innovative content & it all fits so seamlessly with the 8 years of EvE that came before. So fantastic-lol.

As Cpt. Malcolm Reynolds told Zoe when he first showed her his ship Serenity: "Try to see past what she is, and on to what she can be."
You see just a single room, I see endless possibilities. I see actual walking in station, meeting your agent in person; I see virtual corp meetings; I see malls, coffeeshops, grizly bars where shady deals are being worked out. In other words, I see a whole new personal 3D element being added to EVE, for still the price of a single subscription.
It's going to be great. Epic, I'm guessing.

I'd agree with you if CCP's history didn't show us they fail to deliver and/or take ages to do so. The fact that they've said so little of what their plans are for Incarna doesn't help the case. All we have to go on is what WAS from years ago, that build/idea mostly scrapped, and IIRC most recently bars/shops where player's WON'T be creating any content just picking it out of a NEX catalogue and ponying up Aurum to buy.
Having CCP just say it will be awesomeÖ doesn't mean anything.

Well it sounds good; just remember it will be years before all thatĘs implemented so then you will have had 2 years of development time that addsą well no gameplay really.
All while there is some major features broken.
Sure in the best of worlds all the nice station stuff will be implemented alongside with fixes to broken content and delivered with new amazing expansions for other parts of the game as wellą but do you really believe EVE will get that kind of resources assigned? Have CCP done anything in the last years to make you believe that?
