I'm going into my fifth year of play starting tomorrow.
I'm trying to rationalise why we have the Captains Quarters. What purpose does it serve?
It most definitely not walking in stations. You walk but in isolation, what purpose can that serve?
In the future are we going to be connected to other players so we can converse & meet other characters or are we doomed to be restricted to the claustrophobic box we are currently in. Is this box just a front to make the "in game shop" more viable?
The option to turn the station environment off is the worry. If CCP are so confident that this is brilliant why can we turn it off & forget it, after all walking in your closet was billed as the best thing since sliced bread. That however comes at a price, a static screen with a closed door in front of you- well you would not want the door to be portrayed as open otherwise you might be tempted to walk back into your little broom cupboard.
For me, this does not work. I think an awful lot of man hours has been wasted on an ill thought out set of features which for me are pretty much useless. I'm not going to buy vanity items I just want to get out into the Eve world & fight. I would sooner have drones working correctly than a set of features which will be turned off on my interface.

Well, I don't see anything in the new experience that is going to retain new player interest. A new player would probably see it as a nice feature but most veterans will just turn the graphics off & try & get back to business as normal.

You don't because you are not new. The New New New Player Experience is actually pretty slick. It's too bad it will take many months to move on from the closet. I'm secretly looking forward to some gameplay that will make me stop calculating my isk/hr for a while.

Edited by: Venko Trenulo on 06/07/2011 22:06:42 There are lots of reasons for it. Three off the top of my head:
1. A vocal group of players has been asking for Walking In Stations for years, and have been getting promises that it'll happen. CQ is the first step of WIS, a technology demo and proof of (single-player) concept. It demonstrates CCP's intention to follow through on their promise to make it happen, and gives them a proving ground to check things like client load and GPU compatibility in case there are inappropriate design decisions.
2. It allows for potentially flashy demo reels to suck in new players who are used to natural-looking humanoid graphics, but who might not be thrilled with a new career as a full-timer egger.
3. It provides CCP's dust bunnies and vampire wranglers with a live test platform for their motion and character control algorithms and interfaces.
None of those reasons especially grabs me, but so far as I'm concerned the more players they can get in to make CCP stinking rich, the better the chance they'll be able to siphon off some of that isk to improve important internet spaceships.
I'm hoping the "CQ melts GPU" issue will be solved before long. The laptop that I originally played EVE on can no longer handle EVE: CQ won't load, and at full resolution (1920x1200) I get slideshows near my POS, around 10 fps. I suppose I should upgrade, but EVE's the only program that the box can't handle... including LotRO. At substantially lower resolution it's marginally playable in space, but with annoying delays in character echoing and object-dragging.
<edit> I waited (much) longer, and the station does indeed load on my laptop. I'm getting 1.29-1.41 fps in CQ. </edit>

CQ is there to sell vanity items. And to test the new 3d engine, which turned out to be a steaming pile of crap.

Incarna isn't really about EVE at all. It's the imposition of a beta-test for future products, using the EVE community as guinea-pigs.

Because It's a game a game about space ships. Incarna offers no gameplay, functionality or fun(atleast if you don't like to play with dolls)... Can you understand that?

I guess not a lot of people read the development blogs anymore. Looks like the TL;DR people have taken over.
The blogs kept pointing out that Incarna's objective is to introduce a full science-fiction simulation experience. In fact, during the last Fanfest, one of the key members of CCP described the following situation that he hopes to see happen in the future of Eve Online:

So, expect to see your avatar's environment expand in the near future.

To add really cool turret models. Seriously the turret models were IMO the best and biggest feature added so far in Incarna (They really are well done) ____________________________________________

Aside from the fact that there are obviously some issues with the way it was implemented and some strain on computers that needs to be worked out I don't think there is anything wrong with the premise of CQ and the future of walking in stations. If they can make an even more immersive world experience I don't see how that is a bad thing.
But I haven't been playing for 5 years. Are there any long term players that like the idea of walking in stations (despite and glitches issues it may have now) or do all the hard core old timers think it is lame?

No, but they have taken and still are taking their damn sweet time actually implenting it and doing it in a right way. Waiting for something for 3+ years and even then only getting a tiny speck of what it should be tends to make people just a little bit bitter. It also looks at this point that Incarna will not extend sandbox nearly as much as it could, but instead has plenty of segmented content that has to be bought directly from CCP.

No. I can't understand that. Especially since this is only the first iteration, and the full package that Incarna will offer has not been released yet, or even had all the future features explained. This has been stated by devs multiple times. I'm not sure why some people have such a hard time understanding this concept...

Maybe because words "CCP" and "iteration" have not traditionally been... compatible anywhere except PR releases. Then again since this is a potential moneymakers they might put more effort towards "iterating".
