Edited by: Gorki Andropov on 07/07/2011 18:17:47 Unless I've missed something, buried underneath all of the hoo-hah over the MT nonsense was this little gem. I hadn't seen anything on the forums about it:
How much is this going to be abused? lol!

Considering you will possibly get banned for abuse, not much. Even if that isn't the case since you can always claim to 'believe' someone was botting it won't immediately affect the person being reported anyway as CCP will investigate before acting on the account. ~~~

Yes of course, that is a most distinct possibility! However, there are always ******s about the place that will go "hurr, durr, report bot" -----------------------------------------------

Yes, but I wonder how much undue weight this is going to put on the support system. At least with the ISK Spammer option, things were a little more clear cut. Though, of course, one might very well argue that it is the people might just abuse this facility for it's own sakes, who would wreck this idea. -----------------------------------------------

Here is the best use for the bot report option:
Some one is afk cloaking in your space for 23 hours a day. Report them as bots. CCP GM sees log in log out times and deduces it must be a bot cause no one can play for 23 hours a day. CCP GM bans afk cloaker who then has to petition to gain access to to account. Afk cloaker gone.

Botters actually have the client do stuff, not just sit cloaked in a safe spot all day, and randomly probe out anoms to kill ratting ravens in.

That won't happen and you would risk action against you for abusing the report feature. ~~~

That does happen. And a player who is logged in more than it is humanly possible to play (23 hours a day for multiple days in a row) is adequate evidence to suggest they are bots.

Just a sorry excuse to make players intimidated.
Hundreds of macros/bots are reported monthly guess how many get banned ?
Answer is almost none or a extremely few percentage mainly high sec miners. Now the big rollers in nul are free to abuse, everyone knows this.
Propaganda as usual.
Another usuless feature.
Prove me wrong CCP and release Stats on bans otherwise it fails to prove me wrong.
UNCLE HILMAR AND INC can you ban those hundreds of nul sec bots we have reported through the years ? check your petitions |

Confirming that this is indeed the case. Of course things could change if CCP gets bombarded with complaints about false bans. |

Not if they're not doing anything. If you're around at the right times, namely, when downtime is over, you can log in and then go afk all day, while cloaked. That's not botting. |

No, it is not adequate evidence at all. There would need to be an indication of some sort of player activity during those 23 hours. Activating your cloak and going AFK, or even checking back to chat every few hours while remaining logged in the entire day is not even enough evidence to say the player is a bot.
By your logic, both of my trading characters would be reported as a bot because they're logged in 23 hours, but never really doing anything except periodically updating market orders every few hours.
Also, I think there is a thread somewhere related to bot hunting that shows some guidelines on how you should determine a bot before reporting someone as one, and no, AFK cloaking is legit and you do risk getting actions taken against your account if you abuse the Report Bot feature repeatedly based on worthless evidence. |
